Empty seats for OU-OSU Bedlam?

Oklahoma State's controversial ticket policy has led the school to expect as many as 10,000 empty seats at 60,000-seat Boone Pickens Stadium for Saturday's game against Oklahoma in Stillwater. In January, OSU athletic director Mike Holder announced there would be no single-game ticket sales for the OU-OSU Bedlam game. Fans can only get into the game by purchasing OSU season tickets or securing a ticket through Oklahoma, which was given an allotment of 5,000 at $100 apiece.

Oh that's dumb. This is the game of the year for both the school and the state and that many tickets are left unsold?

Shameful.

November 26, 2008  08:52 AM ET

I am pretty sure a lot of schools do this.

November 26, 2008  09:55 AM ET

A lot of schools do do this. Mostly to sell the tickets to the games no one wants to see. Not sure who OSU played in non-conference but I'm pretty sure they wouldn't sell as many seats to those games if they didn't have this policy. That doesn't mean it SHOULD be that way. It'd be ashame if they did have that many seats vacant. The policy is dumb.

Greedy!!!!!

November 26, 2008  11:39 AM ET

OSU's stadium is about 10,000 seats bigger than it's regular football crowd. If those tickets were available, they would be looking at 15,000 - 20,000 OU fans attending the game, and effectively killing the home field advantage. OSU will probably have to keep this policy in place for a long time... or find 10,000-15,000 more people growing on trees, who want to attend OSU home games.

November 26, 2008  11:53 AM ET

Pitt used to do this for the Penn State games. It's shameful.

November 26, 2008  12:12 PM ET

An excellent PR move. Nothing like **** off the faithful for the sake of a few extra season tickets. Of course, this is no different than the NFL's policy of forcing season ticket holders to buy tickets for the pre-season games at regular season game prices. What's next? Personal seat license fees like the NFL??

The word greed comes to mind

November 26, 2008  12:40 PM ET

OSU has had about 10,000 empty seats at every home game this season. On top of that, they raised ticket prices. The Orange Aggies are not happy.

Hi, my name is Mike Holder and I am a complete idiot who does not like my job. My hobbies include killing homefield advantage, alienating college kids who cannot afford season tickets, and making alumni furious. I also specialize in missing out on thousands of dollars worth of ticket money by not allowing empty seats to be sold.

Orange Aggies? Now that is funny.

T Boone Pickens should just pay a bunch of people to wear orange and sit in those seats

Maybe they should just put dummies dressed in orange in the empty seats.

November 26, 2008  02:30 PM ET

Crap like this is why OSU will always be the below OU in terms of fan base in Oklahoma.OU is very fan friendly

They already have that in the full seats!!

November 26, 2008  04:01 PM ET

What? Boone Pickens didn't donate enough money?

November 26, 2008  04:46 PM ET

Problem is, there aren't enough Booners who buy season tickets at the price they set. The Sooners sell out every game. The OSU logic was: 1. Build a bigger stadium; 2. get better facilities (Thank you T.Booney); 3. draw better atheletes; 4. win more; 5. get more fans, 6. sell more season tickets. (In that order) They are now working on 2, and 3. They've got 1 and and 4. The economic problems may have adversely affected 2. winning and the stadium will help with 3. 6 is dependant upon 5. The big problem OSU has is that it is in the same state as OU. If you didn't graduate from OSU, are you going to root for OSU or OU? As the Booners so often jab at OU, a lot of the season ticket holders at OU games didn't go to school at OU. Who cares, they are buying season tickets and donating to OU.
