Padres keeping Greene for now
With the free-agent shortstop market red-hot, the Padres have been on hold for now their plans to trade incumbent Khalil Greene. "I don't anticipate anything happening with Khalil anytime soon,'' general manager Kevin Towers said by phone. Greene hit just .213 with 10 home runs and 35 RBIs, so he won't be so easy to trade either. One person with Padres ties suggests Greene isn't one for mingling in their clubhouse and doesn't appear to fit. But Towers said, "He's a very good person. He's just a very quiet kid. He's not a bad guy at all.''

I know I'm in the minority on this one, but this is good news for Padres fans. Greene is still one of the best defensive shortstops in the game - far better defensively than more than a few superstars who shall remain nameless - and simply had a brutal, brutal year. Taking Greene off the block will give Padres fan at least a little something to be proud of next season (and yeah, I'm aware there was very little interest in him on the trading block).

The guy needs a change of scenery and a fresh start, a la Brad Lidge.

Dude may be a good guy, but he can't hit and an average at best fielder. Twenty years ago, his name would have been Steve Jeltz.

I got to play against Khalil back in his high school/college days and the kid is one of the most natural fielders in the game. His bat may not be top 5 in the league...but he is solid with the glove. And he has always been a quiet and shy dude. No reason to run him out of town unless you want to bring in someone that can hit but has a hole in their glove. If you like that plan better, then I hear Furcal is available.
