Sources: Weis' buyout smaller than expected

During an interview Tuesday on WMVP-AM 1000, ESPN's Lee Corso said Notre Dame is stuck with coach Charlie Weis because of his buyout. "The entire Catholic Church doesn't have enough money to pay him off at $2.5 million for another seven years or whatever it is," Corso said. "So forget about it. The guy is going to be the football coach and they're just going to have to live with what they've got." But as a wise man once said: Not so fast, my friend. The common perception of Weis' buyout is not accurate. Multiple sources have told the Tribune the buyout, far smaller than believed, will not affect whether Notre Dame decides to fire Weis after Saturday's game at USC. One prominent alumnus called the amount "loose change." Whatever the case, a consensus is building among sources with ties to Notre Dame that Weis is in danger of being fired after four seasons. "He has built zero relationships at the school," one source said. "It has been all about him and his ego."

ND has the money. The school was fortunate not to have any priest molestation issues on campus and thus didn't have to shell out any money, unless you count Weis as seriously molesting ND football's program.

It was consensual...

ND certainly has the money. But will the next coach be any better? ND was a day late and a dollar short when they had the chance to get a coach who is even named after a pope, Urban Meyer. But Florida got there firstest with the mostest, as there really isn't any serious BCS school who can't afford a good football coach. Its all about picking which coach to throw the bucks at and then making it happen. There are a number of undefeated "second tier" schools out there (Utah, Boise State, and Ball State). Meyer coached an undefeated Utah before he left for Florida. But ND has always had a number of other worries in picking a football coach, so they never really go after "the right guy." I will predict right here and now that the successor to Weis won't move ND back into elite status, no matter what, although I would expect ND to return to regular bowl appearances.

November 26, 2008  08:51 AM ET

Notre Dame has the money, but I think they are going to be very unwilling to buy him out. Unless USC embarrasess ND this weekend he gets one more shot next season.

November 26, 2008  08:51 AM ET

Why would a prominent coach want to go to ND in this day and age, other than money? Notre Dame is an indendent that does not play for conference championships, they play for elite bowl bids (not so much lately) against an exhibition schedule of military academies, Big 10 schools, Big East Schools and USC. They are like the Harlem Globetrotters, an exhibition team playing an exhibition schedule. I don't think that works in the third millenium. That's probably why they were turned down by Urban Meyer. Florida competes in the SEC and they play for conference and national championships. They can measure themselves against Tennessee (previously) and/or Georgia, and LSU/Alabama in the SEC West. Playing as an independent, is that real football? Playing an exhibition schedule, hoping to catch the pollsters eyes and move up to an elite spot in the rankings with no basis for comparison because ND is independent??

Hello Urban Meyer ... the next coach of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

November 26, 2008  09:06 AM ET

Why on earth would Urban Meyer go to the Golden Dome to play against Michigan State, Stanford and Army for what?? Top 10 rankings? No titles to be won at independent Notre Dame. They are the Harlem Globetrotters trying to land a top-10 ranking for an elite bowl game. But they don't play in a conference. Notre Dame and barnstorming independents are a thing of the past. It's almost 2009, people! It's not the 1930s anymore.

Meyer has a dynasty going here at Florida, thank you. There are no real comparisons to the total package at UF: salary, perks, fan support, booster support, some of the best facilities in the country, fantastic sports environment, great university, great community, incredible recruiting base and ability to recruit nationwide, great weather, etc. Not saying it's impossible...just unlikely.

I don't like either team much, but speaking for myself, I think I would rather stay in a play with a warm climate, a championship system already in place, my recruiting contacts already in place, etc., etc., etc.

I'm with you. Why would he want to leave Florida?

<<Meyer has a dynasty going here at Florida>>
One championship in a row (2006) does not make a dynasty. But Meyer re-established Florida as an elite program after the Ron Zook era, yes.

That what you said may be true, but ND gets PPPPAID!!!

Aside from the weather thing, I'm not sure that I'd give UF the nod over ND for any of those. That's not saying the weather alone wouldn't do it for me (and the quality of the actual team)...

Dah, ya think? Ditto RicheyRod

"Unless USC embarrasess ND this weekend he gets one more shot next season. "

They are 30 point underdogs, what is embarrassing?

November 26, 2008  10:02 AM ET

Somebody please remind me why Ty Willingham couldn't finish his contract, but Weis deserved an extension based on using Willingham's recruits. Weis's record is so much better?

Total package: advantage UF. The Irish may think they have the advantage in recruiting, both objectively that's not the case.

That's not an entirely objective point. They have more talent in their local area, but ND recruits nationally and despite their lack of on the field results, has had success doing so.

Even the biggest (no pun intended) Chuck haters acknowledge that the man can recruit (he just can't develop). As far as boosters, student support, facilities, quality of the university, sports environment, etc., I think you'd be hard-pressed to argue UF trumps ND.

Weather-wise...you win. And your actual team is better.
