Shannon defends Miami's offensive coordinator

Miami football coach Randy Shannon defended maligned offensive coordinator Patrick Nix on Tuesday, and said offensive line and defensive back are recruiting priorities. If there are staff changes, they won't be influenced by athletic director Kirby Hocutt. ''I evaluate the head coaches,'' Hocutt said. ``The head coaches evaluate the assistant coaches. That's how I operate.'' Shannon said Nix ''has done a great job,'' and Shannon wasn't fazed by Craig James' comment on ESPN that UM's offense lacks an identity.

Not sure Patrick Nix has done as well as he should but the Baby Canes are onto something. They just need to settle on a QB. Once one of them steps up and claims the job they will be fine.

Their OC might not be great but after watching the G Tech game, their problem seems to be defense not offense. The OC can't stop 400 yards of rushing, well, unless you say "If they keep the ball away from them", but unless ball control had completely kept Tech's offense off the field (which is an impossibility - Tech's going to get some possessions), they wouldn't have stopped those 50 yard runs right up the gut of Miami's defense... and well, around the ends and down the sides, too.

ok, heres the solution for the canes;

1) start jacory harris (hes obviously 10x better than marve, the stats and game winning drives to clean up marves mess dont lie)

2) fire Patrick Nix. he has no idea what hes doing, this team has no offensive identity, and hopefully his contract will not be renewed.

ahh yes, we have a major problem with our upperclassmen being extremely SOFT (linebackers, d-line, cornerbacks) but no worries, the canes are loading up on talent and there is bright hope for the future (see sean spence, marcus forston, robinson, etc).. if you saw the thursday night game before ga tech (canes vs va tech) you would have seen something totally different, they DOMINATED va tech with 6 sacks and constant qb pressure.. this defense is bi-polar or some ****.

I actually did watch most of that game and you're right. Part of it was they just could not handle the triple option or whatever that thing is Tech runs. Some plays they looked like they knew what to do but other plays it just wasn't there.

Just growing pains for a young team......The disturbing thing I saw during GT game was Canes didn't seem to make any halftime adjustments at all

November 26, 2008  11:07 AM ET

so where is allen bailey, back on gullah gullah island?

November 26, 2008  11:33 AM ET

Guys, if you know football then I think most of you will agree with what I have to say. It was not the OC, soft linebackers, d-line, or cornerbacks. As a former QB/RB anytime you play a defense, with a 4-man D-Line you are smiling when you have 6-Off-Linemen. Every play you have an O-lineman or 2 releasing and going after a LB, then a wingback releasing after that to block. The O-line releasing is the best leadblock ever, better than a fullback. The only way to completely shut down the triple option is to go amano - amano with a five man front to let your LB's roam and make plays. GT did alot of cut blocks on the O-line & LB's, so you can't block a LB if you're on the ground after blocking the lineman in front of you. Bring the safety's up and make the QB beat you with his arm. That's how I would have defended it.

you are partly right, after all the canes missed more tackles that game than every other one combined this year..

and yes, any way you cut it the O coord is a problem - you cant win without scoring points, and constant bubble screens and qb draws certainly isnt the way to do it. dont forget about the 4th and literally 2 inches play where Nix sent out a SHOTGUN package with our speed runner and not our power back..

another problem is making the QB beat us with his arm - shouldnt be a problem, our corners are absolutely awful, and combined the defense only has 3 interceptions this year, stellar isnt it? NOT

but like i said, the talnet is coming in, just need the coaches to step their game up 100 notches

November 26, 2008  11:53 AM ET

Hmmm, Patrick Nix "lacks an identity on offense"? (as opposed to many 'Canes over the years who have very offensive identities, but I digress).

How is it even possible that anybody in any way related to Auburn University's offense (Nix was an Auburn QB in college) could "lack an identity on offense" this year? That is obsolutely shocking!!!!

Oh yeah, I forgot. It's completely expected.

so is he on a vegan diet or atkins with a stat line consisting of 18 tackles and 3 sacks? including 1 tackle against the gators and not coming close to tebow. so is miami going back to the humanitarian bowl against nevada again? enjoy the weather the gators will be in miami.

November 26, 2008  02:09 PM ET

i dont know - maybe the Toilet Bowl? No worries - Alabama will win the SEC title game and FL will definitely NOT be playing in miami..

not to mention, once teabag is gone, the gators are screwed (it wouldnt surprise me if **** left town).. on the other hand, The U is currently rebuilding and ready for a couple more titles soon..

Perhaps you forgot the swamp was dead silent for 3 quarters against the canes? maybe you also forgot the canes have held you to your fewest points on the year.. maybe our freshmen arent so bad after all? hmmm no wonder FL is so scared to play the canes on a yearly basis

November 26, 2008  02:10 PM ET

the ****'s are for Coach Urban Myer (C.U.M.)

November 26, 2008  02:22 PM ET

yeah i forgot about it but apparently you haven't I guess it is the highlight of your season. I got lost in the lsu, georgia, south carolina, and soon to be fsu fiasco. didn't fsu beat miami? I'd still have to say your freshman are bad with the exception of Spence, 41pts. to GT come on. as for Tebow going that's cool won't have nearly the production but the output will be just the same Brantley (pro-style) Newton (6-4, 232, 4.5) Reed (6-3, 235, 4.5) sounds a lot like Tebow.

did you really just mention newton? has he stole any laptops lately? how are those felony charges coming along?

November 26, 2008  05:41 PM ET

Nix will be fine and everyone will love him in a year or two. The problem with Miami is their QBs and WRs are too young and their RBs aren't good enough to carry the team. The only legit big play threat they have is Benjamin, who wore down as the season went on. If they can manage to sign Debose, 2 of the 3 RB commits they have turn out to be the real deal, and progress during the off season they will be hanging 30-40 points on most of the ACC next year. People just have to be patient.

stvjer, your comments as usual sux. you ramble and make no valid points. all you can say is smack. try for once to make a valid point. for example:

1- I was very impressed that your D gave up > 400 yards rushing and that your coaches made no adjustments. very impressive, yup looks like a team on the verge of winning 3 national championships to me.

2- I was very impressed how your O did nothing until GT pulled their starters. very impressive, yup looks like a team on the verge of winning 3 national championships to me.

3- I was very impressed that when your team had a chance to sieze its own dystany it flopped flat on its butt, very impressive, yup looks like a team on the verge of winning 3 national championships to me.

4- yeah UF is running in FEAR from UM. yeah!!! The only unfortunate thing in your logic and I use that word very losely here, is that it was UM who ran in fear from the SEC when they had a chance to join. They could of choose to play UF every year but instead They knew better they choose the MIGHTY big LEAST conference instead. YEAH, that choice showed who was the team in fear. Talk all the smack you want, the problem is the facts show that you have no point but to talk smack for smack sake.

See, its not that hard, I made 4 points and sprinkled my smack in along the way. That is how people with any amount of intelligence do it. now you try it. Let's start by seeing if you can defend my 4 points. Everyone's watching, Let's see what you got.
