Bruins shocked by drop in polls

Players aren't supposed to pay much attention to the rankings, but when UCLA dropped nine spots to No. 13 in the Associated Press media poll this week, Darren Collison and his teammates took notice. "A lot of guys are shocked," Collison said. The Bruins can blame their loss to unranked Michigan in a semifinal of last week's 2K Sports Classic at Madison Square Garden. And with a full week of practice before their next game, they can also get back to work.

It's early in the season. Michigan just got lucky. UCLA will come back strong.

It's not where you start, it's where you finish. UCLA shouldn't be so down on this.

November 26, 2008  09:16 AM ET

also need to add, NCAA men's basketball reg season only matters in that you get to the big Dance. Other than that, rankings shouldn't really matter. Just get into the tourny and win, baby win!

GO BLUE!

They were overrated period. One thing I have learned the hard way after playing the NCAA boards for so long is that the west coast teams are ALWAYS OVER RATED!

With SU's victories over the last two days, we will see the Big East overwelming the polls, (more). Good game tonight Notre Dame and NC....

I agree to an extent, I also think UCLA ran into a much much improved UM bball team. We will only get better once Lucas-Perry is the fold.

They lost a game to a team they should have beat. A drop in the polls is hardly shocking.

November 26, 2008  11:22 AM ET

That they're worried about polls to begin with is an issue in my opinion. That should be the furthest thing from their mind right now.

November 26, 2008  11:49 AM ET

Big deal... They have 3 true freshman who get good minutes... They are going to drop a few games this year... But Howland will do what he does best... Have them ready for a run deep into the Dance

agreed-
I think Alabana football wasn't even ranked to start the season.....

Who really cares about Basketball polls in November or December???

Other than Duke fans, no one pays any attention to Basketball until mid-January at the earliest. Most of us not until late Feb/Early March

November 26, 2008  04:19 PM ET

What did they think was going to happen when they lost to an unranked Michigan team?

November 26, 2008  07:12 PM ET

The Bruins are no better than a 20 buck ranking. The freshman are too fresh. Some vets (MR, JK, JS, ND) just don't have enough 'D' to off-set their pathetic 'O'! To top it off, the coach doesn???t seem to know how to coach other ???D??? than man to man; nor does he know how to coach offense.

Maybe they are a 20+10 buck ranking???

Just takes the pressure off the freshman

What the hell are you talking about? The only overrated programs are on the East Coast...how many times has Duke and NC been overrated in the past. They are always predicted to win and always fall short!

November 27, 2008  05:54 PM ET

May be a good thing for this young and very talented team. Ranking is only important when it comes to tournament seeding time, and of course when the big dance is over.

Yeah UCLA is always overrated! They of the 11 National Titles, 18 Final Fours (including currently 3 straight), etc.

No need to pay attention to any schools out west, is there?

Were you serious when you wrote that? Or just seriously drunk?

Lets just see how far Louisville drops in the polls since they just lost to an unranked Western Kentucky team. Considering that Louisville was ranked #3, they should also drop about the same number of rungs on the ladder as UCLA. If not, then the east coast bias is alive and well.
