The agent for Angels closer Francisco Rodriguez won't start detailed discussions with teams until the winter meetings open in Las Vegas on Dec. 8. Paul Kinzer doesn't expect the marketplace to get busy for another 10 days. "I'll probably see the Mets at the winter meetings. I don't have anything else planned," he said Wednesday.

or could it be that he set the price way to high and most GM's know that he is not worth the 5 or 6 years and $15 mil

This story will be repeated a month from now, only the dates will change.

That's what I was thinking.

You shouldn't demand Rivera money unless you've performed like Rivera. So far no other closer has performed near that level for an extended period of time.

I would be surprised if he gets 12 per year... He closed alot of games for us... Helped us get a Ring... But man... I don't think he's worth that kinda money... Especially for the length of contract he's looking for... Should be interesting to see how it plays out

Whistling in the dark....I am thrilled to see teams just ignoring the silly demands of agents so far this off-season. Every agent is asking for ridiculous years and dollars. Maybe after watching the Rays this year and the Rockies last year teams are finally realizing that signing over-priced free agents is not the way to win. Better to let guys like K-rod go and get the draft picks. However I am sure the Mets will give K-Rod crazy money, because they are desperate.

November 27, 2008  06:51 PM ET

I think it's a foregone conclusion..K-Rod will be a Met. No other team is as desperate. The Mets have to do something after 2 straight choke jobs, even if it means a few extra million or another year on a contract. His agent is practically gift wrapping him...

The closer is the most overpaid position in baseball. The Mets will regret this signing if they give him a huge contract. I would spread the 15 million or so on 2-3 good relievers, as you still need someone to get you to the 9th.

Closers as a whole are way overrated. K Rod in specific is very overrated. Whoever gets him will probably not be happy with the contract three years from now.

Why do you continue to post this inane comment?.... KRod converted 90% of his saves.... that percentage equates to north of five wins a year over the league average..... So, if you were less than five wins from the playoffs and had average to poor closers, I hardly think you'd consider having a solid closer "overrated"....

The Mets made the blown save into an art form last year and finished (I forget exactly) but 1 or 2 games behind the Phillies.... see above comment and determine whether five more wins would have helped their season....

I think the closer role is WAY over-rated. I think K-Rod is even more over-rated than the closer role.

November 28, 2008  12:00 AM ET

K Rod is by no means a bad closer. His numbers this year were very good. That being said he was only the 5th or so best closer in the majors this year. He was handled with kid gloves all year never having to pitch more than an inning and never facing more than 6 batters. I believe he could get a good deal out there but I don't see someone getting Mariano Rivera money when they aren't as good as Mo. And to demand a deal for more years and more money than Mo got is even worse. However the Mets will overpay for him since they have no choice and need somebody in that bullpen who can save a game. The only problem I see is that the Mets do not have the bridge to get a lead to him if he was their closer.
