Former Irish star stands by Weis

One person to whom Charlie Weis can offer thanks: Cubs pitcher and ex-Notre Dame star receiver Jeff Samardzija, who offered a defense of his former college coach over the airwaves Wednesday. "Everyone just needs to take a deep breath," Samardzija told ESPN. "They need to talk about something because it hasn't been the season they planned for, but it happens. It's a lot like my freshman and sophomore years there. Things didn't go as planned, but after that, we went to two BCS games and everything was fine. Everyone needs to calm down a bit."

He's right! Whatever is going to happen will not happen this year.

November 27, 2008  12:14 PM ET

And it won't happen next year... Or the year after that either... Classy move by Smardjza... To back his old coach... But nothing we have seen in the last 4 years... Tells us that Weis can get this program where he thinks it should be... Stay tuned

I'm torn here. As a life-long Cubs fan, I like Mr. Samardijizaraja. As a card-carrying Notre Dame Hater, however, I'd like him to shut his yap about Buddha and the Domers. What to do...

Let's see how many classy people will stay classy today on Thanksgiving and not rip ND. I have my fingers crossed.

November 27, 2008  12:52 PM ET

The reason he's "standing by his coach" is because he can't escape CW's gravitational pull.

November 27, 2008  12:55 PM ET

Samardzija's correct. Next year, 7 wins and a bowl game thanks to a weak schedule. Six opponenets will finish this year with a combined 19-51 record. Four of these are Michigan, Purdue, Washington and Washington State which are a combined 8-38 and have no hope of improving next year due to poor talent levels.

Sorry, sir, but as a student of history, I caucus with the Native Americans on this day. "Thanksgiving"... what a farce. If you can find any NATIVE Americans near where you live, ask some of them what they are thankful for.

Notre Dame is hated on this day the same as any other day, so uncross your fingers and go stuff your face. Oh, and Happy Thanksgiving!!!

I think ol Samar has forgotten that when "things turned around" after his soph. year they got rid of Willingham and brought in Charlie...in other words, made a change. Bottom line is CW is not a what he states he is...an offensive guru. He may be able to come up with a fair gameplan from time to time but the other team has brains on their side as well and they combat what ND is doing and CW NEVER has an answer for it....really good coaches know how to make the needed adjustments, CW can't. And more, he won't cause his damn ego thinks he is smarter then everyone else. His real problem is he worked under both Parcels and Beli who have that mentality and fortunately for them it worked/works for most of the time and of course CW thinks..."well if they thought like that and won then so will I". ND NEEDS to make a change NOW or publically make a strong commitment to CW as the "is he going to stay or be fired" thing throughout all of "09 will KILL recruiting.

I am 1/8th native American Cherokee Indian. My great grandmother was 100% pure. So I know one and yes I will be celebrating. Plus my gramppa died yesterday (not that you know or care) but don't respond to my posts anymore. I was just trying to be cool di**head!

I once read that the favorite college football team of Cubs fans was overwhelmingly Notre Dame. I wonder if that's due to South Bend's proximity to Chicago, or because the battle cry of both the Cubs and Irish is, "Wait 'til next year!"?

1/8 anything = 0.

As a White Sox and ND fan I pity your team choices Eyes. By the way, what is your spin on the latest Seminole Scandal (freshmen wide receivers Bert Reed and Cameron Wade arrested on battery charges). Just "boys being boys" as Coach Bowden no doubt would say...?

There are several successful coaches who for whatever reason cannot translate their success from college to pro or vice versa. Some can only coach high school kids. While most pro coaches can crossover, Charlie is a pro coach and makes pro decisions based on the maximum player ability level he's used to. That's why giving up calling the plays was the wisest decision he's ever made-and it shows he's not a full out EGOMANIAC. He's sharing the reigns and that's the only way he'll ever gain consistent success because he is not a good coach of college age players and he's seemingly unable to "change his stripes". He deserves a few more years to see if he keeps learning to delegate to duties he's not fit for. Charlie will bring the most talented recruits-he just has to let his assistants coach them.

My ND fix for the day, thank you. Stand by him...you can't see around him. Can't wait for Saturday to hear the silence of the ND fans.

November 27, 2008  04:04 PM ET

Weis isn't going anywhere (tough to move something that big).

Notre Dame is not going anywhere either, with CW as coach. They will settle in to the mediocrity of being a 6 or 7 win program.

November 27, 2008  04:04 PM ET

Notre Dame football didn't land this guy $$$$$ in the NFL. He now plays baseball for a legendary loser. Few players and former players ever do anything BUT support the coach. His opinion is neither novel or will it play any role in the future of the ex-patriot.

November 27, 2008  04:22 PM ET

Jeff should have stuck to Football.

November 27, 2008  04:22 PM ET

ok so one EX Notre Shame football player who opted to play Baseball comes to Weis' defense. JUST ONE. When I see a chorus of ex players and alums and administration personnel come out and sing the praises of Weis, I'll then cut him some slack. But we have heard more stories of those who dislike the arrogant SOB than who support him.

November 27, 2008  04:23 PM ET

AMEN. chill out. the problem with Notre Dame football players is that they have to go to class, unlike a lot of other universities, like SC
