Notre Dame still landing LA-area recruits

The Fighting Irish are struggling on the field, but they haven't lost their ability to land some of the top high school players in the Southland. Anthony Barr, who rushed for nearly 2,000 yards this season for Los Angeles Loyola High, is the latest Southern California athlete to become a recruiting target for a Notre Dame program that has been gaining traction in pulling away players from USC and UCLA/ Although Coach Charlie Weis has been having trouble winning games, he has continued the Notre Dame tradition of being a national program in attracting recruits. Two years ago, he signed quarterback Jimmy Clausen from Westlake Village Oaks Christian. Last season, quarterback Dayne Crist from Sherman Oaks Notre Dame and tight end Joseph Fauria from Encino Crespi signed with the Fighting Irish. And this year, Weis has outdueled UCLA for running back Cierre Wood from Oxnard Santa Clara and defensive back Marlon Pollard from Cajon, and beat out USC for receiver Shaquille Evans from Inglewood. Defensive back Byron Moore Jr. of Harbor City Narbonne, who has committed to USC, took a recruiting visit to Notre Dame last week.

... and LA-area team are still pounding Notre Dame on the field of play. (Even San Diego County teams - San Diego State - come close to beating Notre Dame).

Notre Dame is a school with a national recruiting base so it comes as no surprise that they would target LA for talent.

Kids from Catholic schools going to Notre Shame? Wow, woulda thunk that?

This isn't the 1950s Warden. I imagine the "quality of education" has a lot more to do with it than their religious persuasion. It certainly cannot be the quality of their football program lately...

Take all you can get, you'll need them. Make sure you get the RIGHT ones... that seems to be the problem. Wait a minute, these southland kids could go to USC or ND???? What about the HIGH academic standards??? I thought USC had none and ND"S were too high. Takes that argument away from Neuter Lame.

It does no good to recruit top players if they are going to finish 3-10 every season while their coach makes millions. Mr. Ego needs to be removed from the sidelines and sent back to Belichick's shadow where he belongs. The teams he has put on the field are an embarassment to the Notre Dame legacy. It shows the poor job he has done coaching when you have top recruits and you still get your rear end handed to you every Saturday.

This is the list of the top 100 recruits from 2004. Interesting. Hard to say what H.S. players will do at the next level. Just throwing it out there.

I imagine there is a point being made in here somewhere...I'll keep looking.

I think it says that obviously, whatever the haters say, Notre Dame is still an institution that can attract top talent, whatever the performance on the field. This is just a huge statement given the performance of the Irish of the last 2 years. And since these kids do understand football and what it means to play in a good program, they keep coming. All that needs to happen now is to develop the talent in premier players and the team will be back on top.

Big deal... So Weis is obviously a good salesman... And based on the results he is getting from these recruits... Not a good coach... It can't be possible... That the domers are missing on all these guys... In their evaluations... Can it???... So what if a kid who already has committed somewhere else... Takes a trip to another school.... Byron Moore... Will be going to SC.... Unless he has a major brain fart

High academic standards, and you can't find the point? Take your hat off and feel there.... get the point?

Recruiting them and making them into a winning team are two different things. I agree with 50yearfan, if you have watched enough college football and seen enough recruiting classes, you know, a five star athlete in high school doesn't equate to a stud in college.

usc dominated last year and will again this year to be sure, but you are conveniently overlooking 2007 vs ucla which nd won 20-6

My point exactly. READ the ND articles on the home page. If I were a recruit and read those, I wouldn't want to go to ND. Did any of you listen to CW's press-conference about the USC game? He stuttered, rambled, and couldn't get the right words to come out. I saw a man who can't motivate players. The point is, gariboy and others, ND and the pedestal upon which you hyperbolize is corroded...in need of repair. Get off the pedestal, shut-up, and fix it. We at USC love beating a strong ND team. Make the necessary changes and you might beat-up on USC in 5 years.

ND and USC have matched up nearly every year for the past 80+ years. ND leads the series 42-32. So how do USC fans feel about losing to a strong ND team? Obviously you all have had plenty of practice.

That being said, tomorrow is going to be ugly, like roadkill ugly, like deer in the headlights hit by a semi ugly. I can't watch. Let me know when it's over.

Recruits are going to want to go someplace where they think they have a chance to play by the sophomore year. That is part of the equation. All major Football schools have top academic programs.

November 28, 2008  02:22 PM ET

Anthony Barr's father is Tony Brooks. Who was a really good RB at ND. I'm sure most USC fans remember his brother Reggie Brooks.

I hope Anthony is ND bound.

ND alumns talk like there is an advantage to going to ND over other schools. We are talking about cali here, there are about 5 schools as good as ND in cali. UCLA, Cal tech, USC and Berkeley are better than ND so I dont know what you are talking about.

Thanks Keith, always glad to read your freakin pearls of wisdom. How about something original and less obvious for a change?
