Crosby won't pull a LeBron

Two athletes with a lot in common - specifically, status as the young faces of their respective leagues - were about a half-an-hour cab ride from one another early this week. However, Penguins superstar captain Sidney Crosby and NBA megastar forward LeBron James are in many ways worlds apart. Crosby is thankful to play in small-market Pittsburgh. "I'm not setting myself up in a place because of marketing opportunities," Crosby said Wednesday prior to the Penguins' game at Nassau Coliseum against the New York Islanders. "I want to play in the best environment hockey-wise, and I feel like I have that in Pittsburgh."

Good mature comment but could he even imagine the money he'd make in Toronto or a team like Chicago or New York Rangers?

Crosby is a loyal guy, love Mario and is thankful for the opportunity he has been given. Players like Crosby, Lebron, Peyton Manning, Albert Pujols (all superstars that have played for one team) will make their cash regardless of their city of choice because their names are synonymous with their respective sports. Lesser players have to worry about exposure and marketing opportunities.

This why Pens fans love having Crosby on our team. He really does love playing here and his fans.

Dear T & R,

Please. No more fluff pieces about Sid.

All we want to read is how much of an overrated whiner Cindy is and how he dives on every play.

Thank You.

Not to take anything away from Sid, but it would be hard to find anyone on the team not happy to be in PGH at the moment. You're playing for a cup contender, the front office actually cares about winning (see PGH Pirates) and you're getting a new arena in 2 years. Life is good in Penguinland.

Kudos to Sid! That kind of attitude only enhances his stature with team mates and players throughout the league. Don't worry. He'll make his money regardless, without all the preassures and distractions of a place like Toronto or the Big Apple! Smart!

This story reflects the overall difference between the trash-talking ghetto based, hip-hop NBA and the still classy NHL. Professional sports are in a slow motion suicide, the high cost of attending games means they have no young generation of fans. Existing fans, like myself, are sick of over-paid thugs running their mouths all the time about how tough they have it, while making $20 million season. The NHL is the one sport I still enjoy. Sidney make be a diver, but I'd take him on the Bruins anytime, flopping and all.

November 28, 2008  12:50 PM ET

He's having too much fun sleeping and Daddy Lemeuix's couch!

I'm sorry but Sid does not have the stature within his sport as James does.

November 28, 2008  12:55 PM ET

Of course he isn't leaving. Him, Lemieux, and Bettman have an agreement to market only him to the entire NHL audience.

November 28, 2008  01:12 PM ET

Im not so quick to give him credit for saying something he had to say. If he says anything else then all hell would break loose. If he takes another 8.7 per yr extension then he'll be talking.

November 28, 2008  02:04 PM ET

The kid and future of hockey has class. Lebron has no class and never has.

November 28, 2008  02:29 PM ET

Of course he won't pull a Lebron. He's a hockey player, not a gangster.

November 28, 2008  03:33 PM ET

I think it helps a lot that Sid has a strong supporting cast, most notably, Malkin. What will happen when Malkin decides he wants to be the leader and take captaincy of a team? I realize that he signed a contract recently, but one can't help but wonder...

November 28, 2008  03:33 PM ET

Lebron isnt coming to New York for the money. He just realizes that if he wins a championship in New York it will be like no place else. He wants to own New York.

November 28, 2008  06:03 PM ET

Crosby=Class. Pittsburgh may be a "small market" but the passion for hockey and the passion of the fans here is immense.

Man you need to get over that crap. I'm a die hard Wings fan and I watch as much hockey all year long as I can...that dive crap is way blown out of proportion. Not ONE time did he even do HALF a dive in the finals..or any of the playoff series. Sounds like the old "damn I wish I had him on my team" sour grapes to me

November 28, 2008  06:52 PM ET

What is a half dive?

That's where only one leg comes up instead of two. The whining and diving stuff has gotten old and stale. I admit he did alot of both his rookie year, but he's gotten better with that crap every year.

November 28, 2008  08:27 PM ET

its easy to say that when ur making 8.7 million a year

November 28, 2008  08:28 PM ET

Unless you're Malkin.
