Fuentes' price tag stuns Mets

Brian Fuentes' representatives told the Mets the free agent closer is seeking a three-year deal worth $10 million to $11 million annually, according to a source familiar with the discussion. That price tag is a bit high for the Mets, but they are still interested in the former Rockie. GM Omar Minaya contacted the agents for Francisco Rodriguez and Fuentes on Tuesday, trying to lay the groundwork for in-person meetings. The Mets appear to be moving on parallel tracks with both free agents, content to sign either if the price is right. But a $30 million-plus commitment to Fuentes over three years is more than the what the Mets think he's worth.

and $75 mil for K-Rod isn't?

Whether it's the Mets or another team in need of a closer, can someone explain to me why Trevor Hoffman has not been at least mentioned for consideration?

I know that its a day late for Thanksgiving, but the more I see the Mets struggling to get a closer, the more I am thankful to Ed Wade for giving the Phillies Brad Lidge.

The Mets are in the drivers seat with the closer thing K-Rod needs the Mets Fuentes needs K-Rod, they are going to use Hoffman and Fuentes against K-Rod to get him to drop his price Fuentes isn't worth 10 mil but smart move to use K-rod to get more money. If I was Omar I would corner K-Rod if he doesn't budge on the amount of years offer Fuentes 3yrs at 6 mil when he refuses get Hoffman for 2 yrs dirt cheap then turn around and get us another bat one that shows up late in the year and isn't on the Social Security line

Hoffman is the third or fourth option among closers. The teams that lose out on K Rod and Fuentes will be calling after they sign. For the money, give me Hoffman for a year or two.

I agree for the price you may be able to get him for, he could have 1 strong year left in him, just to rub it in the Padres face.

None of these closers is worth anything like the kind of money they are looking for. If you are going to squander $75 million on K-Rod, why not go $150 million on Sabathia, who will actually WIN games for you. Another way to look at the price on these pitchers is at the frequently mentioned possible salaries, CC would cost a team $100K per inning, K-Rod would be $200K per inning. I wouldn't sign Fuentes for more than two years at $6 million each. A so-so closer for a bad team.

Does anyone believe the Mets were actually stunned by the asking price? Unhappy? Yes. Stunned? I find that hard to believe.

I'm not suggesting that he should get a similar contract, but a strong case could be made that Fuentes was a better pitcher in 2008 than Francisco Rodriguez was.

An ERA well under 3 in Coors Field is quite impressive to me. He's also a lefty which is always good.

It might balance out somewhat, though, because the NL West is so weak weak offensively.

LMAO. Mets to Fuentes: Dude, you're BRIAN FRICKEN FUENTES.

November 28, 2008  05:19 PM ET

The Cards should be after him, but Mozeliak is obviously tied up with much bigger things. Like Trever Miller and Arthur Rhodes......

Hoffman is done, and as much as Wagner scared me in a big game, Hoffman scares me much more. Fuentes is crazy if he thinks anyone will give him that much. I'd rather take the cheaper/risky option of Kerry Wood. Two years ago Fuentes lost the closer role in Colorado for getting shaken up to easily, and this is NY we're talkin about.

He's all but done! That's why. Why do you the Padres weren't interested no more?

Did you see how many saves games the Mets blew after the 7th this year. The Mets don't need CC, we have Johan. Closers are valuable because they pitch almost every day and are crucial in close games. Plus, that fatboy is a chump when it counts, which makes him way over priced.
Shell it out for the bullpen and an outfielder, resign Oly or sign Lowe, bring in a #5 to replace Pedro. AND GET CASTILLO THE FU@K OUT OF HERE!!!!

sorry mets fans. They will eventually pass on all starting pitchers and closers. they need the money for more important items like a private jet for the owner, a well stocked bar for the gm and plenty of bandaids for the has been mets team.

because he is in his 40's--has no fastball, and has been averaging 8 blown saves a year lately--
age has caught him. he isn't worth what he will be asking. why do you think the padres let him go.too much money-not as dependable anymore.
