Teams use video game to judge talent

Houston Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey doesn't play video games for fun or fantasy. Morey uses the EA Sports NBA game for professional reasons. He uses it to help evaluate talent. Morey says he is a statistical junky, an admirer of Oakland Athletics General Manager Billy Beane and a mathematical nerd. "I've always loved numbers," Morey said. "I don't play EA Sports as a game. I use it as a tool." While the kids plug in NBA 08 to "ooh" and "aah" over how real it looks when Kobe Bryant dunks or LeBron James runs the court and finishes, Morey plugs in for more serious purposes. "Say if you're thinking about acquiring Ron Artest," Morey said from Hawaii, where he was evaluating talent in person at the Maui Classic college tournament. "On the game, you can see how adding Artest can change the dynamic of your team. You can program it to run offensive sets with Artest and any combination of your players." According to the NBA, about half the teams are using the video game as part of personnel evaluation. In the quiet of his office, Morey said he can see how often a player posts up and gets shots on cuts to the basket as well as about defensive and offensive tendencies.

Hello Daryl,

Do you believe in <put the name of your favorite supreme being here>?
Do you watch Cartoons?
Do you believe in love?

I wonder what difficulty he has it set on when making said evaluations. Or, better yet, if the EA catch wind of this stuff and try set up a glitch so all of the top free agents or trades ruin chemistry for every team other than their personal favorite.

Really? Video games is how you scout now?

Nba 2k9 or nothing!

Live is a pretty good game this year. With that daily update teh computer plays much better and gives you a challenge for once. This really isn't tha big of a deal. Teams have been using video games for a while to simulate real world things. The arme uses them all the time and some college Football teams use NCAA football to simulate game time decisions.

QUOTE(#5):

My thoughts exactly. I don't think I would say this publicly. Maybe that's why so many NBA teams are a mess internally.

I agree with you. That's something you keep to yourself. Video games should not be a good measuring point of athletic talent.

Artificial intelligence is good but not that good.

Maybe I could get a starting spot for an NBA team then, cause my created character be killin' them!! League MVP, All-Star MVP, Finals MVP, league leader in points, assists, rebounds, steals, blocks, best shooting percentages...

November 28, 2008  10:36 AM ET

This is BS.

It's just some lame exec's excuse for charging the "NBA 08" software purchase to the team, and for defending his decision to play video games DURING office hours.... -What a waste of a story and time!

try stephon marbury in live 08. big difference in team dynamics in video games and real game. or wait until artest explodes.

Man I would use NBA 2k9 over NBA Live.

Maybe i should try that with my boss later today. It helps me see customers in the stands and what advertising schemes work for them in a simulated real world environment.

The dumbest thing I have ever herd!

You guys really need to chill the hell out. He didn't say that this is the only measure for gauging players or a trade. It is merely a small tool in a large arsenal that NBA teams use. I'm usre at this point it is mostly experimental, as to gauge to breadth and depth that video games could go into in the future for forecasting players and teams. As with any business, if you fail you adapt you lose out. I just hope my Phoenix Suns have "video games" (ie: complex statistical mechanisms) on their radar because you can even see in the last 5 years how much video games and simulations have advanced and how important statistical analysis can be for orienting teams toward predictions for the future. You all need to not take things so literally and understand how the wave of technology is changing EVERY BUSINESS that exists, which the NBA is.

he's being facetious, right? i know morey is a numbers nut, but i heard he has custom, rocket science-level advanced formulas and simulation programs for determining this type of stuff? is he telling me he actually just plugs people into nba live?? well, i hope for his sake the A.I. increased on that. last time i played live was 2004, and the only two CPU offensive moves were the isolation and the pick-and-fail.

November 28, 2008  05:10 PM ET

09 isn't actually that accurate, RON ARTEST KEEPS MAKING THREES!!!

November 28, 2008  06:40 PM ET

if this isn't next week sign of the apocalypse I'll be hugely disappointed. Now, instead of actually scouting, this brain surgeon is watching video games. If I owned this team, and I read this, after I cleaned up the table from spitting my coffee all over it, I would probably fire him or cut his pay. I mean, why not just hire the guys from EA to run the team?

Yes, that's how the SMART GM's scout now.
Welcome to the 21st century, folks. Instead of poking fun at this method, you should applaud the advances in software, computer graphics, and artificial intelligence in being able to simulate real-world conditions.
As was mentioned, the military has been using computer simulations for years. Pilots in training have been using flight simulators. In case you haven't heard, doctors and surgeons have started using robots and computer software to perform operations to allow smaller incisions and faster healing time.
I'll just say this one point. The half of the GM's who are NOT using the video games had better start soon, or they will be at a distinct disadvantage from the others who are keeping up with the technology and the times.

Your right, JL, it's smart to use these simulations.
But! But one thing. NBA Live games are not very accurate. I've played them, I have 07, 08, and 09. They look good in graphics, but the gameplay is not realistic. 09 is somewhat close, but no one should rely on these games. I don't know about the 2k series though.
