Top free-agent slugger may come cheap

Things have appeared oddly quiet for the biggest slugger on the free-agent market. That would be Adam Dunn, who may find his value isn't quite what he had hoped (though we have to believe he doesn't actually expect the $100 million that ex-Reds teammate Bronson Arroyo says he's expecting). The Nationals, who have been in on many big names (including Maryland native Mark Teixeira and Maryland resident A.J. Burnett), could be a possibility. Nationals GM Jim Bowden is said by baseball people to love Dunn, who hit .236 with 100 RBIs and 40 homers last season. A few other teams might look Dunn, as well. He is the most consistent 40-homer hitter in baseball. How consistent? Well, he's hit exactly 40 home runs for four years running. And the year before that he hit 46, giving him a grand total of 206 homers in the last five years.

He should be a could pick up for an AL team that needs a power DH

November 29, 2008  08:10 AM ET

very true and put him on a contending team, it could help his BA

November 29, 2008  08:27 AM ET

Too many strikeouts, low average, and no defense, No thanks !!!!

November 29, 2008  08:43 AM ET

Still wouldn't be a bad pick up for someone if the price is right. His 40 homers a year will over shadow his little over 1 strikeout per game, there just aren't that many guys out there now who can hit 40 homers for you.

I've changes my opinoin on him....
I used to believe what budman said above.....
but you're right-
his production #'s are very solid & on a decent team
he might not be so 'aggressive'.

NOBODY is going to be what they think they're worth this winter.....the economy is in shambles....a lot of the owners probably have lost 30% of their net worth in the last 6 months....the companies that rent the skyboxes are filing for bankrupcy...and the average fan who could barely afford the ticket prices when things were good are going to stay away in droves next year.

I agree with you- in principle- BUT...the typical seaon ticket holding
sports fan will still come- granted there will be some that can't
But remember- the average american still (fortunately) has a job

The people who have lost their net worth - as you mentioned-
is not their daily expendable income- it is their savings/investing
vehicle- not their 'throwaway income...which is used on things
such as entertainment & sports.

I am not saying americans aren't hurting....obviously we are
and sure overall revenues will drop-
but I don't think it will be as precipitous as you think
EXCEPT if the teams suck- ala the pirates- then attendance
will suffer even more than it currently does-

I hope that you're right and I'm wrong jgb.....it just seems like the sports world hasn't yet acknowledged that the country is in a recession. What I would like to see are some teams say that we are not spending on any high priced free agents and we might even cut player payroll BUT we are rolling back ticket prices 10% across the board. It will never happen, particularly in NY but if the owners really want to hold the line on crazy FA contracts, there will never be a better time.

This is his problem.... 40 HRs looks nice.... but the rest of his game is sub average.... He's the current Dave Kingman....without the 'tude....

November 29, 2008  12:31 PM ET

Economically speaking, I know a lot of companies that have dropped their "Suite" tickets and season tickets to save money during the down economy..... this is, I think, the hidden problem and why teams won't open their check books as much..... a lot of revenue is received from Corporate bought tickets....

Someone from the AL will give him 6-7 mil to play DH and mash but not more than that

Grossedout:

What is wrong with you?

November 29, 2008  04:27 PM ET

Adam Dunn was offensively more valuable than Ryan Howard in 2008.

Yeah, that's just Grossedout. There's something wrong with him, but he won't tell us what.
