Yankees skeptical of Angels' Sabathia bid

People inside the Yankees organization are skeptical about whether the Angels are as serious as it seems about signing star free-agent pitcher CC Sabathia. Some Yankees officials seem to believe: 1) that the Angels leaked their alleged intention to make an offer to Sabathia approaching that of the Yankees' $140-million, six-year offer to drive down the demands of first baseman and stated top target Mark Teixeira, or 2) that if the Angels do go for Sabathia, it will be with an offer in the range of $100 million-$120 million, not $140 million. I, however, tend to believe the Angels are serious about Sabathia. A competing executive from another American League team told me he believes the Angels are "dead serious." He predicts the Angels will match Johan Santana's $137.5-million, six-year deal with the Mets, causing the Yankees to up their offer to $160 million over seven years. At that point, the Angels would have to decide whether to increase their own bid. Sure, the economy's in the tank. But there's only one Sabathia out there.

This wasn't news 3 days ago when it was originally posted. Still isn't. Another slow news day.

May be slow, but if CC wants the west coast like everyone assumes he does, Angels will win this war with the Yankees

Until he signs its anyones guess. It appears that none of this crop of free agents are in any rush to sign. They know what their value is since the Yankees rushed to make lots of offers. It seems the Yankees thought they would blow CC away with their offer and are dissapointed that he didn't jump at it. I'm still not sure if it will come down to total dollars. I don't know if a athelete really cares if he's making so much that his grandkids grandkids are taken care of.

I believe the angels are interested...whh wouldn't they be
But reason #1 they gave- regarding lowering Tex's demands
seems bizzare

Maybe Players dont wanna play with the Yankees. Maybe its not all about the money. Its pretty sad when a team has to make a way over the top offer to get players to play for them its even worst when they dont want to.

Does anybody really think the Angels are serious about Sabathia consider Lackey still has to sign long term after this coming season as well? Lackey's gonna want his especially if the Angels actually make a big offer to Sabathia instead of talk about making one. They need Teixeira a lot more than they need Sabathia. Soon the Yankees will be interested in Teixeira to scare the Angels. All of these teams are so interested in making sure the other pays top dollar that they all end up paying top dollar because they say they are interested in players they really aren't that interested in. No wonder none of the free agents are accepting any offers - the longer they wait, the more nervous teams are getting about losing the players they really want...

You should change your name to "Tell it how it might be". Because you're just another idiot with a biased opinion.

I really hope that the Yanks dont get CC because im a red sox fan but they will not be killed if he doesnt sign with them. They got Joba, Wang, Hughes, re sign Pettite and a FA like Lowe or trade for Peavy and thats a above average rotation. Plus really if your team is good enough to win the WC your just as lickely to win the series as the 100 game winner that runs away with division. See 04 Red Sox 06 Cardnials

lastly the angels even with CC will not win the series. they are losing Texeria and K-Rod if they sign him. And garret anderson and Vladdy isnt what he once was.

I would say that the Angles probably have a better chance of winning the 2009 World Series than any other team. I think that because they're the only team that is really a lock to make the playoffs and once in the playoffs, anything can happen.

and CC will be on the Angels roster, he is staying on the west coast, all the Angels have to do is offer him a 5 year contract at around $100 mil, because if the money mattered he would be wearing pin strips right now

Love how you reply on your on quote, even the I do agree with you, they are going to be so embarresed throwing that money out there and CC turning his back to it

Yankees should not bother making a counter offer if the Angels make a serious bid. Bad enough he just turned down the best offer ever made to a starting pitcher. He doesn't want to play in NY and if that is the case then they need to move on to another plan. Sorry but 8 years of not winning the WS can take a lot of the shine off every player's supposed dream of wanting to play for the Yankees. As a Yankee fan I'd love to have CC but maybe this is what it is going to take for Cashman and Hal to just forego free agency and stick to the plan of drafting well and promoting from within.
