Jackson's new deal surprises some
There were some around the NBA who were surprised when the Golden State Warriors gave captain Stephen Jackson a three-year, $28 million contract extension earlier this month. He's had a bit of a checkered past off the court and still had two years left on his current contract but the Warriors have anointed him their team leader. But Cavs coach Mike Brown, who coached Jackson in San Antonio and Indiana, thinks he's been misunderstood and is not surprised the Warriors think so highly of him. "He's always had the leadership qualities he's showing now," Brown said. "People don't remember, but in San Antonio in 2003, he was very important in our run to the championship." Jackson, who still has a close relationship with Brown's two sons, credits Brown for helping him develop.

His size and talents fit well into Nelson's style game.

He's playing well - granted-
and the 3 years at under 30 mil is manageable & movable if needed
But still- he's 30 already
Not sure if extending him is the right move for the franchise's future

He's a hot-headed player. Nevertheless NBA players get paid looooads even if they aren't all-stars so this doesn't surprise me.

There's a reason he's been on so many different teams. He's talented but a problem.

Memo to Golden State:
NBA chapter Stephen verse Jackson: "If a bad character player changeth his ways and doeth that which is right he shall earn a contract extension"
Please note: This rule does not apply to Stephon Marbury.
Sincerely,
Allan Houston.

And so tell me friend who not been hot-headed in their life. Remember "let he who without sin cast the first stone". Or maybe you think you are holier than thou.

Players always seem to play harder when their contract comes close to expiring. That motivation alone would have been a good reason wait. His temper is the obvious reason to be cautious. Hopefully for Golden State their confidence in Jackson will be rewarded by his continued leadership.

You know, setting aside the arguments about age and potential future productivity for a moment (because, I mean, guards can still play well past their 30th birthday, and Jackson's game isn't really predicated entirely on speed or leaping ability) . . .
Normally I'd agree with you, Flip, but I don't think this is an unreasonable deal. Over the last couple of seasons in GS, Jackson seems to have really matured. I mean, after his troubles in Indiana (though I'd point out that A LOT of players have been having issues there, so I'm not sure it was all about Jackson), I was the first person to be skeptical about his chances of ever growing out of that crap. But since he got traded to the Warriors, Jackson's teammates have, to a man, said that he's one of the best teammates they've ever had. He's a captain there, a respected veteran. I haven't heard a peep about his touches or his pecking order in the offense, and this was on teams with Baron Davis and Monta Ellis. He's apparently, if you believe what writers at ESPN and SI report, involved in charities in the area. All in all, I think he's turned his life around. It's not entirely the same thing, but contrast it to what's going on with Starbury in New York; it's like night and day
If he gets in trouble again? Yeah, I'll eat crow. But I think that he's only 30 years old, and I know A LOT of people who took about that long to mature. I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt here.

i think it's a good deal.... stephen has shown consistency in the past couple of seasons. he is not a guy the team can build around but he's a good 2nd or 3rd option. and it's not as if he signed a 50 million contract like maguette, which is a bad move. 28 million is just reasonable for what he contributes to the team...
