AD: Indiana keeping football coach
Incoming Indiana University athletic director Fred Glass doesn't officially begin his job until Jan. 2, but he felt it was important Friday to make something clear regarding IU football coach Bill Lynch. Glass said he has heard from and read reports about disgruntled IU fans who believe Glass' first move in his new job should be to fire Lynch. Glass' take -- It's not going to happen. "Bill Lynch is and will be the football coach at Indiana University moving forward,'' Glass said. "My view is last year Indiana University entered into a contract with Bill Lynch to coach our football team with an expressed promise really to give him an opportunity to get our football program to where we want it to be. And it seems to me that to fire him after one year (of a four-year extension) would not be giving him that promised opportunity. "I really think contracts need to mean something again at Indiana University.''

There is definitely something wrong with the chemistry of this team. Lynch is the head man and has been given the responsibility to continue as head coach. Either he needs to make some changes with his staff or there are some players who are poisoning the team's progress who need to be sent on their way. Changes definitely need to be made or this team and its fans will suffer through yet another disappointing season. A 5 to 6 win season would show progress. Another 3 and 9 campaign or worse is unacceptable. Being a perennial doormat should not be tolerated...contract or not. Should Lynch's team perform again as last season, then he should offer to step aside and release Indiana from the contract without penalty. Give former head coach Sly Croom of Mississippi State credit for stepping aside to allow the program a chance for change.

I think that they should honor their contract, however, I hope next time they don't just jump in and give it to the next guy in line. It is so rare that just taking an inexperienced assistant works that they should ALWAYS perform a real search and see who else they can get. Continuity for one season is not worth a long term drop off. Hep was doing well, but he was a very experienced, proven coach. Lynch was not.

I think it matters. There is no reason that Indiana cannot field a competitive football team. It can be done with good leadership. No one likes to see their team get beat up time and again by their rival. It gets old, eyesWIDEopen...don't you think?

Yes it does matter. During my time at IU I saw three different head coaches, DiNardo,Hep, Lynch. DiNardo was not given enough time to have any real affect on the program. When coach Hep was brought in he changed everything, attitude, reconstruction of the stadium and decent players. Obviously his life was sadly cut short and his team which was coached by then interim coach Lynch went to its first Bowl game in 14 years. I feel Lynch is not as good as a coach as Hep but he can, if given enough time, turn this into a winning program. I do not expect national championships, but bowl games should be expected.
