Stars consider benching Turco

Coach Dave Tippett didn't place all of the blame for the Stars' 6-2 loss to the Sharks on Marty Turco, but he did place a significant share. ``Our goaltender has to be better,'' Tippett said. ``We expect a lot of more from certain players, and that starts in goal with Marty. We have to have good goaltending right now with the group we have here.'' Turco admitted that he was upset after allowing five goals on 19 shots. ``It's disheartening,'' Turco said. ``You want to do so much more, be the guy that turns this around, but we know we have to do this together.'' ``It could have been a big night for us tonight, a big spark,'' Turco said. ``But, in fact, it was the total opposite.'' When asked if Tobias Stephan, who allowed one goal on 11 shots in the third period, might start Sunday against the Edmonton Oilers, Tippett responded: ``Everything is wide open for discussion.''

if this team turns it around it will be because of turco.... i just cant see why you would center him out.... maybe if the stars werent so busy killing avery and ott's penalties they would have a shot... will tippett credit turco with about 75% of the stars wins.... im guessin not.... this is like blaming luongo for a loss..... seems like hes biting the hand that feeds him...

If they bench Turco, it will be an opportunity for unknowns to become instant heroes! The Oilers seem to have a knack for breaking other team's players out of long scoring slumps or scoring their first NHL goal, making rookie goalies look like Vezina trophy winners and giving struggling teams their chance to turn things around!

November 29, 2008  01:56 PM ET

Don't bench him do what they did last year with Smith and make him contend for his job.

This doesn't look good for the Stars with Turco's struggles and Morrow out...

True True!!! I can't stand Avery and I am surprised that his playing(if ya can call it that) style hasn't been taken appart by the fans, as I am sure that they are more interested in winning than in who Avery can tick off the most. Now that Morrow is out the offense isn't going to be as strong so hopefully for Marty's sake Dallas will start playing just a little more like New Jersey with Brodeur in the net. Defensively!!!!!

November 29, 2008  03:31 PM ET

Since they added Avery they have demolished themselves.

I am a Stars die-hard and this season is killing me. As crazy as it sound I believe the signing of Avery has poisoned what was a very good mix on and off the ice. That still doesn't account for Turco's meltdown. Back to Avery; he is a cancer and a marginally talented instigator that takes stupid penalties at inopportune times. Brett Hull was given the keys to this franchise and has proceeded to trade for an overrated and overpriced defensively-limited forward (Brad Richards) and sign a goon who thinks he is a GQ editor. Avery was Hull's Playstation 2 buddy in Detroit and has cashed in with a ridiculous offer no team even came close to matching. Stars players (including Captain Morrow) stated at the time of the signing that they despised Avery and were skeptical of his presence. This season has blown up before Thanksgiving.

It's hard to believe signing one guy could do this to a team, but I guess it is possible. Especially with an a*****e like Avery.

November 29, 2008  09:38 PM ET

ffs!! Avery cant do all this to the team. Im a starfan and dont really like Avery. Ok trade him for a bag of used pucks, if it can get Stars on the move. But kicking Tippet is another way to get a new start. Give tortorella a try to get the sh??p in right direction!

November 29, 2008  09:47 PM ET

Another die-hard stars fan here, and I don't think benching Turks or booting Tippett is the answer. I say bring in a reliable backup like Smith used to be and make him contend like AnotherOne81 said. Also get Avery the hell out of here.

As absurd as it may sound, I think not having Stu out there on the ice is a possible reason for the Stars woes this season.

Please get it together guys...I'm dying

I was thinking the same thing Looch. How does the bottom drop out so badly, so quickly!

I may be wrong, have seen very few of these guys' games but I think injuries to Zubov, Lehtinen and now Morrow along with Miettinen and Barnes leaving the team devastated this team's defense. Now the only guys who are reliable in their own end are: Robidas and Sydor (though he doesn't log tons of ice time). Isn't it the case?

Easy to blame Avery, but you are wrong. Injuries, sophomore slumps and horrible goaltending have put the stars in this position. Teams go as their goaltender goes. I love Marty, but he is simply terrible this year. Give them 5 more games before they start to gel.

December 1, 2008  09:17 AM ET

there might be a few reasons for the decline... but i still gotta go with the avery signing... im not saying that he doesbt give it his all every shift... because he always does.... but he never thinks about what the team needs first.... knowing that most of the players on dallas (and every other team) never cared for him, most of the defensive stalwarts on the ir, turco being shaky between the pipes, and a struggling offense... what does this goof do..... he puts the team down a man more then anyone in the league.... and his effect on ott has not been positive either.... though if ott is dumb enough to follow avery then he gets the blame... but it comes down to if he was playing "for the team" he would go out play a hard nosed defensive shift and keep his **** outta the box so he team isnt playing short-handed because at the moment theyre not equipped to do so.... the stars will gel when avery figures this out.... good luck with the tavares sweepstakes... avery thinks about avery

December 1, 2008  09:52 AM ET

a good "pest" gets the other team off their game... not only does that not happen but the other teams usually get "fired up" to play him... and a "pest" that spends most of his time in the box is no longer a pest but a reliability

December 1, 2008  10:13 AM ET

Avery is being blamed because he is such a lightning rod. This is misplaced blame. I don't love or hate the guy, just trying to be honest. He is NOT the problem. He leads the team in +/- and outside the Boston game he has been one of the better players on the team. Nor is the problem Turco (other than lack of motivation that is. The talent is there with Turco). The problem is the eternal one: They have "stopped responding" to the coach. This is the most disgustingly unmotivated, undisciplined team I have ever seen. When they want to play, as a group, they can. Fire Tippett, and hire Tortorella or some other harda$$. Tip is too nice of a guy and it no longer works. Hull Schmull, he's irrelevant. Anyone who thinks Sean Avery is the downfall of this team is sadly mistaken; he's playing pretty well.

The problem is that the Stars haven't even shown the most remote amount of defensive play all season. This starts with Turco of course but there is SO much more blame to go around. The play of the Stars has mostly been pathetic. Sure, people can blame Avery and others for the penalties but this is a team that used to not have much of a worry at all of being down a man. They could grind out penalty kills with the best of the best. Things have really changed in D Town and Morrow being out is pretty much the straw that broke the camel's back if I had to guess. They not only need his skills but his leadership.

Marty will bounce back sooner or later IF the team can get back to its roots of being a defensive grind out style team.
