Indians shift search to closer

The Indians' two main targets among free-agent infielders were second baseman Orlando Hudson and shortstop Rafael Furcal. Late last week they determined that physical questions about Hudson (left wrist) and Furcal (back) weren't worth the risk of multiyear commitments. It means they are likely to focus on a closer. The free-agent market overall has been slow, but there are closers available and a limited number of teams pursuing them. The prominent free-agent closers are Francisco Rodriguez (2-3, 62-for-69 in save situations, 2.24 ERA), Brian Fuentes (1-5, 30-for-34, 2.73), Kerry Wood (5-4, 34-for-40, 3.26) and Trevor Hoffman (3-6, 30-for-34, 3.77).

Leaving in the Cleveland area I never knew that the Indians had a need for a closer. Thanks Cleveland Plain Dealer you are still a worthless fish wrap. Try telling the world something that hasn't been talked about since the start of the 08 season.

Opps, that Living in the Cleveland area not Leaving. Maybe a Freudian Slip there.

krod & fuentes are the only FA closers a 'serious' team
should be looking at- Hoff is 140years old and done
and wood is a strong breeze away from another DL stint

I think Hoffman will be the best value of the four. He's not done.

shat! if the Indians don't want Orlando (the bloom is off) Hudson then **** neither do I want to see him be got by the Yankees now, either. Those rumors of Robbie Cano being in the best shape of his life better be true, though.
Indians maybe should go for Fuentes but not at the money he is asking and for the years he is asking. He seems the best of a shaky lot for now.

Trevor Hoffman has saome pretty good numbers but it just seems to me that good ole trev has been in some key situations and not exactly set the barn afire in those situations. and, no, I am not gonna go look up every little instance he choked.

And Paul tell your pal Slinky I said the other week to keep the damn lake effect snow up there. We gots snow in CT right now..... ,had snow in Ct.. stopped now.

come on....
- first of all he's FORTY-

now lets look at the last 3 years....
era- INCREASING from just over 2 to just under 4
Innings- DECREASING (granted pads stink)
ER & HR's have increased (in less innings)

November 30, 2008  10:00 AM ET

November 30, 2008  10:00 AM ET

The fact that he's forty is what will make him available for a one or two year contract.

He gave up some homers in '08 that inflated his ERA. He averaged over a strikeout per inning, a 5.11 K/BB ratio, and his WHIP was 1.04. That's decent and I'd rather have the Indians give him $4-5M than commit $60M to Rodriguez.

I think the closer role is overrated. The Indians won 93 games in '05 with Bob Wickman and 96 games in '07 with Joe Borowski.

Cleveland will be back next season, tough as in '07.

What's up, JC? I tried to contain the snow, but my efforts were in vain.

I can't argue with your last point slink-
sometimes you do catch lightning in a bottle.....

but for the most part- the 'stable' teams....playoff
contenders year after year have good closers
-yanks, sox, angels, twins-

Hoff (or any NL pitcher) in the AL might get shelled
Krod is Hoffman - change of speed guy - and 14 years younger

I don't think I'd consider the Twins playoff contenders year after year. The other three? Well I think the fact that they spend a shartload of money has more to do with the fact that they're perpetual playoff contenders than the fact that they have closers. As a team with a modest payroll, I'd rather see the Indians spending those limited dollars on position players and starters.

I think that's a very valid concern.

Especially from the NL West. When a pitcher like Derek Lowe looks like an ace, you know it's the Little Sisters of the Poor Baseball League.

I think Rodriguez is going to get $12M for four or five years. I think that's crazy.

Don't get me wrong, he's a good closer, but he had the worst season of his career in 2008 and was, like, the seventh best closer in the majors. He should not be approaching Rivera money.

Is that a picture of Trey Anastasio?
