USC rout puts Weis on chopping block

This was dominance the likes of which this fabled rivalry -- or any rivalry -- rarely has seen. The Trojans outclassed the Irish (6-6) in every conceivable way before 90,689. When it was finally over, the question on the minds of Notre Dame fans everywhere was the same: Is it time to chuck Chuck? ''We're engaged in the process of evaluating the program and asking how we can make it better,'' said athletic director Jack Swarbrick, who said there is no timeline for completing the evaluation. ''There are a host of answers to that.'' It's hard to imagine Charlie Weis surviving this, not in Year 4, not when he's in charge of an offense that failed to record a first down until the final play of the third quarter and was outgained 265-9 at the half and 449-91 in the game. Whatever sentiment there might have been for giving Weis another year seemed to dissipate into the Southern California evening during Notre Dame's second-most lopsided loss in the rivalry's history. By the time the fifth-ranked Trojans (10-1) took a 24-0 halftime lead, Irish fans no doubt were passing the hat to raise the reported $10 million it would take to buy out Weis' contract, which runs through 2015.

As I prepare to attend Sunday Morning Services, my wife asked why I was loading empty bushel baskets into the truck. SIMPLE!!! I plan to collect donations at the church doors to both assist in the buy-out of CW and buy him a token "Last Farewell Supper." It's the right thing to do! "Feed 'em, then fire 'em!" Make no mistake, I'm not sure, even with the burgeoning talent, that "Touchdown Jesus" can turn this team around, but right now, I certainly believe that it isn't "Buffetdown Charlie."

Bye bye Charlie

How can you fire a coach before his first recruiting class becomes a senior? Ask Jim Grobe (Wake Forest Coach, for those of you who only read about sports) how smart that is. He built a great team at an academic institution by redshirting players and letting 5th year seniors start. At ND you get three years, and if you win with someone else's players, you get no credit. Idiots- who are you gonna get? Bob Davie back? Please. When a coach like Urban Meyer has immediate success, its because his predecessor did a great job building a team. Just watch- whoever coaches next year at ND will be pretty successful, but you have to be patient. Freshman and sophomores need time to build strength.

Chunky was very good at recruiting, but a terrible motivator. RickRod at UofM had half his team go pro or graduate, ergo he has nothing. harlie had pruior talent as well as highly touted recruits coming in and STILL didn't produce. Some guys aren't meant for college some aren't meant for the pros, some are destined to be head coaches and some loom in the wings as assistants. It seems Weis' destiny is being a pro assistant.

November 30, 2008  10:44 AM ET

If it was a fight, it would have been stopped in the second quarter....The gap between the elite college teams and ND grows wider..

November 30, 2008  10:58 AM ET

To me, if Notre Dame were losing games by scores of like 55-49, it would still be bad, but it would be more understandable, somehow. Weis' reputation was that of the Mad Offensive Genius who came up with the scheme that powered that Patriots' offense. The fact that they look utterly inept at offense really seems to speak to the fact that Weis is a fraud, that it was either Belichek who actually came up with that offense...or that having tapes of the other teams' defenses helped more than the Patriots claim it did.

Plus, it speaks to the fact that Clausen should just stick to cavorting on boats with other guys in Speedos, and should not be the starting QB of a "major" college team.

November 30, 2008  11:02 AM ET

The more I think about it, the more I realize that firing Weis would be a HUGE mistake right now. I'd give him one more season. If you get rid of him, ND still will have a problem of a new coach(es) and new system. The only way Charlie should get canned is if the players are vocal enough to tell the school that he hinders team unity. I believe that most of the players like him.

November 30, 2008  11:07 AM ET

He has to go. Look what they did to his predecessor, who had more class than Fat Boy. He needs to retire, eat more, then get a job as a blimp. Hope ND replaces him with another loser. Probably not wait a few games to sign the new jerk to 20 yr $100 mil contract! I love the sound of money leaving the wallets of ND alumni!!!!!!

November 30, 2008  11:31 AM ET

Notre Dame University and their 'fans' CANNOT be this BLIND and Delusional <spell check> to believe this will get any better with Weiss as coach??? Face it, your Messiah has proven to be a FABLE, let it go!!! But only if the right coach comes along, like the Virginia Tech defensive coordinator (I think his name is Bud Foster), for example. Besides, since Weiss has left New England, the Patriot's offense has been MUCH BETTER anyways!

And in case someone wants to argue what I mean about Weiss being the Fightless Irish's Chosen One, look no farther than his ridiculous contract!!!

Thank you, ND.... my family and I had a great time in the Coliseum yesterday. Is there anything we can do to return the favor? It was a magical moment when ND got it's first 1st down. We all (ND & USC) stood and cheered. Time to right the ship.............

I'm loving that sarcasm. But yeah, it's a bad sign if (both) fans cheer for your first first down, which happened in the third quarter.

November 30, 2008  12:08 PM ET

I thought I saw Chesseburger Chuck at the In N Out on Sepulveda last night ordering a 4x4 with extra onions. Man that guy is even bigger in person.

November 30, 2008  12:41 PM ET

Now see... If Weis was REALLY smart.... He would have made his way over to Phillippe's.... Don't get me wrong... I love In N Out as much as anyone.... But the best french dip sandwich... Womps over a burger... And oh yeah... A supposed Offensive Mastermind... His team records its first first down... On the last play of the 3rd quarter???... Don't even get me started.... On the less than 100 yards.... For the entire game.... And I don't wanna hear any crap... About it taking until prime recruits are seniors.... Before a proper evaluation can be made... Prime example was across the field last night.... SC gets major contributions... From underclassmen.... Should be an interesting few weeks here

November 30, 2008  12:57 PM ET

Is it Charlie, or is it the fact that ND is no longer a player in the bigtime? It's probably both. They need to join a conference, as the days of the independent powers are gone.

this is the bottom line. how many "top recruiting classes" is he going to have before he turns this program around?? By saying give him more time to get his recruits in as seniors, as suggested by Deion Warrick is a ridiculous sentiment. By that statement, you would be looking to have a successful season every four years... what happens when those seniors graduate...?? (see: 2007).

He needs to go. He may be a great coordinator at the pro level, but he is not right for the college game. Good luck, Chuck... and see ya.

November 30, 2008  01:07 PM ET

Deion Warrick, ND has already done that! Ask them how they can fire a guy after 3 seasons. Not to mention this is season #4 for Charlie(and believe it or not he was recruiting when he was still with the Pats) and they have sunk lower than when his predeccessor got the ax!

Actually you could do us all a real big favor, we really
would appreciate it. Can we please swap coaches.

November 30, 2008  01:44 PM ET

It is very hard to argue about letting him go. But what decent coach right now is going to leave his program and come to ND. Most of the great coaches are planning for bowl games. By the time they finish there bowl game most of the recruits Weis has will have most likely left. Leaving the program again in shambles. The coaching carosel at ND needs to hold off unless ND likes having 6 recruits signed once every 4 years. ND NEEDS to go back to the traditional ways and let the coach stay at least 5 years. (Sorry TY) New system, new coach, another 4 years to be good just doesn't sound like the answer. Give Chuck one more year and if he loses to Nevada the first game than can his ****. I've lived through 12 years of hell I could go through one more.

I think what DW is saying that once a school gets that
first good class to have a large sum of players hit their
senior years as 5th yr. guys, then that pattern carries
on thru the rest of the classes, so from that point on you'll
have a good number of 5th yr. seniors every year, and
that is how a program can build a solid team with longevity.
CW's first class is seniors now, but there is no substance
in this class being he got to the school to late in the recuit-
ing process, and his junior class was rated 10th but there
have been quite a few higher rated players that have left
the program, so it is not that good of a class either. His
sophmore class does not have too many redshirted players
in it, but this freshmen class has about 12. So they would
have to wait another 4yrs. till they hit the 5th yr. slot. I
don't think CW will ever get over the hump, and ND can't
wait that long for the cycle to take hold b/c they will start
to loose the recruiting sales pitch that CW has been using
up to this point. Kids want to go to a winner

weis is delusional. 4 first downs and he has the gall to say whether he decides to leave or not? like theyre gonna say oh please stay and keep leading us into irrelevancy. what an absolute clown. although the real blame goes to the numbnuts that gave him his contract. pure idiocy on the college part.
