Will De La Hoya-Pacquiao sell in bad economy?

With the economy in a nose dive, how many people will pay $54.95 to buy Saturday's telecast of the Oscar De La Hoya-Manny Pacquiao fight? It's an intriguing matchup. De La Hoya, the sport's most popular fighter, against Pacquiao, the current lightweight champion who's the world's top-ranked boxer pound for pound, in a bout set at the welterweight limit of 147 pounds. given the severity of the economic downturn, executives at Top Rank, the Las Vegas-based boxing promotion company that handles Pacquiao, are projecting the De La Hoya fight will attract only 1.5 million pay-per-view buys. That still would be the second-highest pay-per-view sales for any De La Hoya fight. HBO is working hard to sell the fight. As it did for De La Hoya-Mayweather, HBO has rolled out its "24/7" four-part reality series promoting De La Hoya's and Pacquiao's life stories. The social-networking site Facebook has created a "Dream Fight" promotion to attract a younger fan base to the bout. However, because of concerns about the economy, fight sponsors Coca-Cola, Tecate beer and Full Throttle energy drink are each offering pay-per-view rebate coupons worth $10 to $20 that, when combined, can reduce the $54.95 pay-per-view price to $4.95.

7 hours and no comment except to mention that apparently no one care's enough to comment....doesn't look so good for their PPV sales...and the sponsors are a bad beer company, a bad energy drink, and Coca Cola...

Well it is De La Hoya, its not like we are talking about an elite fighter, I rather pay money to watch Kimbo Slice on the internet duking it out on the streets with some thugs!

I respect MMA fighters, but it is still a sport in early development. Evidence by the "biggest fight ever" Lesnar/Couture. Lesnar had only 3 fights under his belt and it is the biggest fight ever? One day these MMA fighters with great talent will stand up and figure out that it takes them 10 fights to make what top boxers make in 1 fight. This type of greed that is being exhibited in MMA ownership is the same type of greed that has hurt boxing. Learn from boxing's mistakes Mr. White and pay your fighters.

I think Boxing had it's last heyday shortly after Buster Douglas beat Tyson. Tyson was a huge draw - bigger than anyone or anything in the UFC. Once he got beat by some no-name, Boxing took a huge hit. But then it was fun to see Lennox Lewis, Holyfield, and Tyson duke it out for a while. After they all left there, was a huge vaccum in the Heavyweight Division, which trickled down to all of Boxing. UFC came along and slowly filled that void, and has surpassed Boxing. UFC delivers a good product and is compelling. I don't think Boxing will ever be as big as it was in the Ali or Tyson Eras
