Will Mets revisit Texas trade?
Earlier this offseason, the Mets asked the Rangers about catcher Gerald Laird, just as they did last year, a person familiar with the situation said. There hasn't been much discussion there lately; the Mets, as we all know, have prioritized the renovation of their pitching staff. But the fact that the Mets checked in speaks to how difficult it is to build a good catching crew. Last year at this time, the Mets thumped their chest about putting together the tandem of Brian Schneider and Ramon Castro. After suffering through nearly a full decade of Mike Piazza and Paul Lo Duca behind the plate, the Mets looked forward to having strong defense at catcher. The tradeoff, not shockingly, was poor offense. Laird put up a .329 OBP and .398 SLG in 95 games for the Rangers, a rare team with catching to trade. They have Laird, Max Ramirez, Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Taylor Teagarden and are looking to trade from this surplus in return for young pitching.

with all their catchers, Salty seems to be the only one Texas is looking to trade right now

Teagarden to the Sox for Buccholz and a single A pitching prospect to be determined. Buccholz is gone that's why the Japanese guy is coming to Beantown!

Teagarden is going to the Sox for Buccholz and another class A pitching prospect. Michael Bowden has jumped ahead of Buccholz and Buccholz has now been deemed expendable.

if winter league means anything Salty seems to have found his bat. .435/.594/1.043 coming into Sunday. And he is still only 23. Teagarden is good but Manuel Pina at AA frisco is a better defensive catcher with a stronger arm. and both are younger than teagarden. so if the sox will do teagarden for bucholtz the rangers should stop playing and get the deal done.

Suffered with Mike Piazza at Catcher??.... I know he couldn't throw guys out, but he was not a bad defensive catcher..... and there really wasn't a need then because everyone was taking steriods waiting for the three run homer....

Seriously - who wants to play for the Mets as long as Omar is in charge !!! Talk about a team with no focus - it's suppose to be a team game isn't it ???

If the Rangers want to trade their catching surpluss for pitching, they should do so for guys that can get hitters out, regardless of age. The dreadful signings of Millwood, Park, and Padilla have crippled their payroll and their poor leadership has allowed a drought of pitching to persist. The Rangers should trade 2 of their young catchers for the biggest number of pitching prospects they possibly can. Their closer had a 6.02 (!!) ERA and most of their pen had ERA's over 4.00. Simply, their rotation and bullpen are a shambles.
The Rangers have no pitching, have lost Teixeira and Bradley, and have nobody in-house to make their relatively strong offensive core shine. They either have to commit to rebuilding or to competing... If its rebuilding, trade Blalock and Padilla with those 2 catchers for a few MLB-ready prospects and a bunch of highly touted A-ballers. If it's competing, they have to get aggressive and not only trade the 2 C's for pitching, but replace Bradley's potent bat and add a corner OF (Ellison, Boggs, and Catalanotto aren't going to be league average). If Nolan Ryan lets this organization be wishy-washy and flunder much longer, they are going to be in competition with the Orioles and Royals for the A.L. team heading nowhere fastest.
