Why Plaxico carried a gun

Plaxico Burress armed himself because he was afraid that the flashy bling he wore would get him held up, he told employees at the Latin Quarter nightclub. The weapon fired into Burress' leg as he fumbled for it after it fell down his pant leg. The bullet tore through his already injured right thigh. Burress initially refused to let his pals call 911 after the shooting, but relented two hours later, and went with his wife, Tiffany, and a friend to New York-Presbyterian Hospital Weill Cornell at 2a.m., sources said. He was released hours later. Teammate Antonio Pierce, 30, who was with Burress, initially stashed the gun for his pal, police sources said, but it is believed he later gave it to Burress' wife. Cops drove to Burress' Totowa, N.J., mansion Sunday night to get the piece, a source said.

There is no reason to carry a gun. People get shot with them. And the true idiots in this world end up shooting theirselves. Put this boy in jail before his mind makes him think he is more than any other human on this planet. He ain't that good and the Giants should cut his butt and teach him a lesson. And what was he doing at this gay nightclub anyway? Also at 2am....you most likley are looking for trouble or looking for crack. The real woman they are not out this late at night unless they are the scummy type that - run the streets with the dogs.

These circuit city ads are annoying as all hell. They keeping jumping in front of everything I click. It's near impossible to use this page.

December 1, 2008  06:28 AM ET

Now there's a legitimate reason to carry a gun. If he had gotten held up it probably would have turned worse probably would have gotten himself killed carrying a gun and not knowing how to use it.

Why worry about this clown carrying a gat?

It would appear the tough guy is both incapable of drawing the weapon to shoot it and if he does manage to bust a cap he will hit himself...

December 1, 2008  07:05 AM ET

first of all if he was really that worried someone was going to rob him he should have left the "bling" at home

second: why didn't this idiot have the safety on?

HA HA What a clown. But then again half the basketball & football players are clowns! If you are worried about getting robbed then (1)probably shouldn't wear all that bling (2)should you be at that club or in that area if that is what happens?

GROW UP!!!

Let's see. He was afraid of wearing so much jewelry in public would cause him to be mugged. I don't know, but would it make sense not to wear it if it is going to cause a problem???? Is this so difficult to figure out?

Gee, given all of the problems that NFL players have had with clubs lately, maybe it is best to stay out of them, especially if you are supposed to be injured. How many have to die and spend their lives in wheelchairs before these guys get the message.

I guess these guys can't stop telling the world they are "successful" and must do it any way they can. Then they wonder why no one has any sympathy for them when the commit felonies and get arrested. Whatever. Maybe you can be roomies with Michael Vick and can discuss felonies.

Hey Plax, Antonio and Brandon, are you truly idiots or do you just play them in public. Brandon was happy that Plax was laughing it off, so he belongs in the circle of stupidity as well.

Everything about him has been well said............the pro football system is flawed badly. Character has to be evaluated before they get into the pros. College needs to be held accountable, scouts, lawyers, and owners and managers. The system allowed this guy to earned a lot of money as an entertainer and then endanger people at large becasue HE thinks he has a right. Pull the plug on this guy and put him into PacMan pergatory...trade him to Dallas or Oakland now.

All the issues he has had this season showed mentally where he is at. Something was bound to happen sooner or later.

That's funny, pw.

They could have made their article a lot more concise by simpling answering the question "Why did Plaxico carry a gun?" with......"because he's an idiot".

Know this, I think what might bother people at large about certain non-white ethnic groups is the cultural bias, not a color bias. Plax and Pacman have a terrible burden to carry. They have been given the rare opportunity to make alot of money and be at the center of their profession and because of the cultural events of their lives they bring an overcompensating attitude to the game. And their indignation and holier than thou perspective is a cultural bias from them. Know this, this is a human tragedy. He could do so much more than be self-centered and immature.

December 1, 2008  08:12 AM ET

Oh well. I hope he enjoys the clink. NY state has some very tough and non interpretive gun laws. He is looking at jail time for sure.

December 1, 2008  08:15 AM ET

Why are all NFL players loose cannons? The reasoning behind carrying a gun is for 'protection' although we all know if no-one carried guns, no-one would needs guns for protection. People forget how lucky they are. Athletes get paid millions to do a sport which they generally love, they are famous, have loads of fans, money isn't an issue, no worries in the world, yet they can't even hold a career without incident for the whole of 15 years or however many years an NFL player averages before retirement.

Don't wear the flashy bling if that is what you are worried about. Pretty simple numb nuts.

December 1, 2008  08:27 AM ET

There are big signs in NY telling you what will happen if you have a gun. Let's see if Bloomie will stand up to his rich buddies and allow the police and prosecutors do their jobs.

Even more simple: if you have reason to believe that getting robbed may be an issue, you might want to consider that this probably isn't the best place to chill out.
