Why NASCAR sponsorships won't go away
I am as suspicious as the next guy when it comes to the way numbers can be played with in assessing things like economic impact a Sprint Cup race has on a community or what value a sponsor gets out of backing a race team. Such things are an inexact science, at best. But some numbers came out last week that are too staggering not to look at. Joyce Julius & Associates monitors sports sponsorships, but it is best known for measuring exposure given to sponsors during televised sports coverage. In NASCAR, for instance, Joyce Julius looks at telecasts of races in NASCAR's three top series and clocks how long a sponsor's logo can be seen clearly. It counts each second and then multiplies that by what it would cost to buy a second of advertising on that telecast. According to this year's research, Jimmie Johnson's sponsors had their respective logos shown for 59hours, 28minutes, 39seconds. By the Joyce Julius formula, that means Johnson's sponsors got $510,161,750 worth of exposure. Carl Edwards, who finished second in the standings to Johnson, had his sponsors shown for 58:50:11. That equates to $495,908,515 in exposure. Add those numbers and you're talking about north of $1billion (that's with a b) in exposure for the top two cars. OK, you're thinking, there's no way that's right. A billion dollars? I'm with you. But for the sake of argument let's say the Joyce Julius formula gives 10 times the actual value to each second of logo exposure a sponsor gets. In other words, it's 90percent inflated. Even at that, we'd be talking about $100million in exposure for sponsors of Johnson and Edwards. All of a sudden sponsorships costing $20million or $25million don't seem terribly absurd. Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jeff Gordon and Kyle Busch got the next best numbers this year in Cup. The top 10 Cup teams got more than $4.3billion in exposure for sponsors.

The big teams like Hendrick and Roush will never have problems getting sponsors to their teams, all they have to say is they are looking for one and they will come.

The exposure formula is great in theory, but does it really pan out when people see the logos? I am going to go to Lowes to get my home products regardless of sponsor. I like Smoke 100 times more than JJ, but Home Depot is a subpar store compared to Lowes therefore I don't shop there. I have heard people say "why isn't there a Wal-Mart car"? My response is always "do you honestly think they need to put there name on a car to attract business?" I think the whole "exposure" thing is inflated and just a reason to justify the corporate heads to drop the cash on teams....people are going to shop/use the products they want and trust rather than if its logo is on a car.

Also, AMP is frickin TERRIBLE and not even Jr. as a sponsor will make it sell any better, regardless if you can knock out an 800 lb gorilla!! By the way....when was the last time we saw the Golden Boy with a chick by his side...not that i am saying anything or that there is anything wrong with it.

I thought he had an 800 lb chick by his side the other day. It kind of looked like he didn't want her around either.

Did the chick resemble a Gorrilla by chance?? Maybe it was a corporate deal to have a "mascot" by his side.

As someone who has hunted for sponsors for 30 years, it ismore than just exposure, it is tax write offs, company moral, pride, exposure is mostly for new startup company's, now tck you say you like lowe's better than home depot, well it is a proven fact that FRANCECAR fans are the most brand loyal of any sport, so the corp. exec's look at this, face it they dont know squat about racing( much like Brian France) but they know about the bottom line...

Well said, Cereal ....I doubt many of us shop ANYWHERE just because of whats on the car. Jr has 'Amp'...I tried it for kicks one time..its terrible. As for the rest, I mean come on..who if any of us goes out and BUYS 'Du Pont' automotive finish paint??? I certainly don't buy any Caterpillar equipment,etc..........

Here's something to consider..(off topic alert).. I attended the L.A. Auto show this weekend...and here's GM trying to sell cars, right? So they have the new Camaro (2 actually...one silver SS and one called 'Black' that I believe Dale Jr (on topic alert!) had a hand in designing/modifying/suggestions,etc.). Could you sit in either one? NO. Cars sitting up on turntables spinning. Can't touch, cant feel, just 'look'. 2nd year in a row for this 'look but don't touch' thing. STUPID !!! And the Big 3 wonder why sales lags? Let the public sit in it and see how it feels you bunch of dumb basses. They even had the Corvette ZR1 on the floor where you could at least TOUCH it and look in it (even though it was locked). At least Dodge had the Challengers represented..the base car, the R/T and the SRT models to crawl all over. It's no wonder GM's sinking due to dumb ideas like 'no touching'.

the reason is prolly that the cars are one offs.... not built to stand the touching or crawling over.. they would fall all apart. not knocking GM (which I am known to do) but it is a show car not a consumer car.

It's great that they got close to $500 million in coverage, but how many tools, building supplies and computers did they sell off that exposure? On the other hand, it's a huge selling point to potential sponsors that these two gus got that much value for their sponsor dollar.

I would tend to agree with you Dr but they weren't one-offs. The Camaro they had last year was their concept/prototype, but the ones at the show were production ready. Why GM chose to have their $110,000 Corvette ZR1 on the floor and not their $30,000 Camaros available is mindboggling when they'll sell tens of thousands more of the Camaros than they ever will of the pricey super Vette. And..uh flounder..I have a 13yr old Chevy that I've drag raced and more or less beat on and the car still runs like a champ, won car show awards and doesn't rattle or drop parts on the road. They're not ALL bad ;)

Bottom line, dollars make the racing world go round-n-round. And the other not to forget, "what wins on Sunday sells on Monday" Where else you going to find 200 mph traveling billboards????
