Tuberville on Auburn hot seat

Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville rose from a restless night after an embarrassing Iron Bowl loss and commenced trying to convince recruits to stick with the Tigers. In the meantime, Tuberville awaits resolution of his own future at Auburn. The Tigers' worst season in 10 years ended with a 36-0 loss to No. 1 Alabama on Saturday that served to brutally emphasize Auburn's shortcomings, particularly on offense. Tuberville then hit the road for recruiting and said he didn't know when he would meet with University President Jay Gogue and athletic director Jay Jacobs on his job status. "I've got a contract here. I'm working," Tuberville said. "There's no doubt that we can get this thing turned back around. I didn't turn into a bad coach overnight. I know this program better than anybody. "I know what it takes. I know the type of people that you can get to come in. I know our strengths and weaknesses. And I'm fully committed to doing it. I'm going out and selling that." Tuberville will have to emphasize his long-term track record and hope a 5-7 season full of things out of his control (injuries) and well within it (a disastrous offensive change) won't cancel that out. He is 7-3 in the Iron Bowl.

He should be

December 1, 2008  08:59 AM ET

He has been on the hot seat for years.
I doubt he will be coaching at Auburn next year

December 1, 2008  09:20 AM ET

Sometimes change is needed. The hotseat is appropriate.

December 1, 2008  10:49 AM ET

He'll be back, though he'll need to throw some of his longtime assistants under the bus.

If he has a similar year next year, though...

December 1, 2008  11:05 AM ET

Terry Bowden might be ready for a comeback..

December 1, 2008  11:24 AM ET

I don't think the hotseat is necessary. Does anyone remember 2004? Granted, Tuberville should not have released Tony Franklin in the middle of the season, but I'd give the Riverboat Gambler one or two more seasons.

Note to any coaches: do not coach in Alabama. The boosters are out of their minds there.

What injuries have they had? I'm aware of Trott but what other injuries? Blackmon wasn't an injury loss from what I have heard. Although I could be wrong.

December 1, 2008  11:34 AM ET

He is coaching the third best team in the state (Yes Troy could have beat them).

December 1, 2008  12:14 PM ET

Getting rid of Tommy would be a terrible idea. Good coach, good recruiter, just needs to get the right assistants and they will be back in TWO years

I'm not sure I'd consider firing his offensive staff as "throwing them under the bus". They've been gawd-awful for a couple of years now. They need to go NOW.

If he did throw them under the bus then it would be one of the few successful throws Auburn has had all season.

December 1, 2008  01:23 PM ET

Auburn's weakness for the past decade has been the boring, sleep inducing offense. If Tuberville is fired, I'd say Auburn should re-hire Tony Franklin as the head coach and the man in charge. His offense didn't work for the Tigers because there was NO cooperation between him and the rest of the staff on the offense. What point was there to the hire then?

December 1, 2008  01:26 PM ET

I hope he stays. He has made a lot of money off Bama being on probation and not being able to recruit. Now he is surrounded by Richt, Meyer, and Saban when it comes to recruiting. The results are beginning to show. Give him an extension!!

December 1, 2008  01:58 PM ET

As a Tide fan, I would love to see him go. But, how dumb would Auburn be not to give this guy one more year at least.

Maybe so, but wasn't it the "Tubster" that hired this "gawd-awful staff?" When the AD gives the coach what he wants, the coach has to assume the blame!!

December 1, 2008  02:57 PM ET

I think Auburn would be making a big mistake by firing Tuberville. I am personally a big fan of Tommy T and love his coaching style. Who could they possibly find to replace him who would be a better coach? Tuberville (although originally from Texas), is a true vanguard of SEC football and it would be a loss for the conference if he left.

December 1, 2008  03:53 PM ET

We need to beat him 5 more times just to get even..Keep him..Roll Tide

December 1, 2008  04:41 PM ET

Its complicated. As a resident of Alabama....and a neutral observer of AU and UA....I can speak the truth about the situation that others are afraid to. The TRUTH is this: Auburn defined success as "winning the Iron Bowl"...they had NO OTHER ASPIRATIONS. So, they were happy with mediocre seasons as long as they beat Alabama. They never envisioned that Alabama would hire a quality coach and return to level the playing field with all of the problems the Tide had, in the not so distant past....but who could blame them for thinking this way? Just look at SMU...they still haven't recovered.

Believe me, If Auburn would have won Saturday...we wouldn't be having this discussion. Tuberville would have been the "greatest coach that ever lived" once again....but now reality has finally set in on some of the Auburn faithful. The team in Tuscaloosa is relevant again..and all signs(recruiting, coaching, media hype, overall talent, etc) point to them dominating Auburn again...like that Ole Bear fellow did. Now, if your ONLY claim to fame was beating Alabama when they were subpar...and you seriously question if you could ever do that again...you would panic too...and throw anybody under the bus if you thought it would heal the wounds.

December 1, 2008  05:02 PM ET

UABsuckx would you happen to be a Troy fan that is mad about the way Tubby treated Tony Franklin. You would be right. Anyways, they give him one more year.

December 1, 2008  10:55 PM ET

If Auburn keeps him, he'll eventually just float away on those giant dumbo ears....
