Why Stafford, Moreno may opt for NFL Draft
A decision made by NFL owners at a meeting in Atlanta in May could push Georgia's Matthew Stafford and Knowshon Moreno toward the 2009 NFL draft. The owners voted at that meeting to end the league's current collective bargaining agreement early -- a complicated process that basically puts pressure on the NFL and its players' union to negotiate a new deal by March 2010. One issue expected to be on the table in those negotiations is the current system of compensating rookie players, particularly high draft picks. Some owners have said less money should go to unproven rookies and more to proven stars, leading to speculation a rookie wage scale might be implemented to reduce the guaranteed signing bonuses that go to draft picks. It's anyone's guess what will emerge in the give-and-take of negotiations with the players' union, which currently is seeking a new leader after the death in August of long-time executive director Gene Upshaw. But the mere possibility of unfavorable changes in the draft for 2010 and beyond is one factor that Stafford, Moreno and other underclassmen eligible for the 2009 draft will consider.

Any kid who thinks he has a chance of getting drafted in April should go for it. Sadly, America's future will be better for kids who sign huge bonuses due to athletic talent than for kids graduating with Masters and PHDs in their field of study. Sad truth. Set up your future in the coming American Modern Depression, go get drafted and sign that contract. We'll escape our own painful realities by watching you kids play football on the weekends.

Agreed with EastCoast on hitting the draft while you have the best chance. I will also add that GA and Mark Richt were they MOST overrated coach and team of 2008!

Whoa deh now, you can't forget about Clemson and Auburn who had much worse seasons and ranked in the top 10 also. Alabama and Georgia Tech were just very underrated, and we all knew that the winner of the World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party would win the east (and that happened).

Preseason #6 Mizzou (8-3, the same record as UGA), #7 LSU (7-5), and #8 West Virginia (7-4) were all also in the top 10 to begin the season. Preseason #10 Auburn was 5-7 and #9 Clemson was 7-5 also. Georgia even won some head to head match-ups against some of these teams this season. I know you love to hate on Richt and the Dawgs, Truth, but that ain't true.

Richt fares pretty well in the SEC overall, but he isn't the championship caliber coach many expected him to be this year and last. If Moreno goes pro, they have Samuel, but the transfer of power will go to Tennessee.

I don't keep up with the NFL much besides the Falcons, so this may be old news. The fact that the NFL might change their drafting rules seems like the bigger story to me. Sure it may affect some kids' decisions right now, but drafting rule changes affect all of NCAA football and the NFL. The fact that I haven't heard about possible changes to the '10 draft suggests that it is not that serious yet.
I still think Moreno will stay one more year to become a top 10 draft pick.

How about, the SEC was the most overrated conference going into the season. That's difficult to argue against.

How about if UGA were in the Big East or the Big Ten, Pre-Season #1...Even if they lose one game. they would still want the shot at the NC

I can't imagine Stafford going pro. Any team that would risk a high draft pick on him hasn't watched him play this year. He had a good game against Tech, but besides that he hasn't had a good game. Over-throws, bad reads, trusting his arm too much. He definitely needs another year in college.

Why does everyone get so much satisfaction in making the statement that UGA was overrated? If you think that us true fans of Georgia get angry when you write that, you're barking up the wrong tree. We obviously had a hard time defeating quality opponents and got beaten soundly by them. Thing is, our losses came to teams ranked #1, most likely #2, and now in Tech being inside the top 15. It's not the end of the world. Our players need to improve and our coaches need to step up the intensity by a large margin. Us fans celebrated the #1 pre-season ranking but we did'nt give it to ourselves. The media went nuts over our offensive potential, not us fans.

Oh yeah, the draft.... Stafford and Moreno should both stay if they plan on being an effective professional football player. They should go if they want a lot of money. Being a starter for an NFL team is possible for both of them but it is still a gamble, whether it's this year or next. Just depends on what they want career wise. I don't know what they should do but I think that neither one will have financial difficulty in their futures.

I knew in the preseason---with all of the typical, predictable, media hype that this Georgia team would be OVERRATED! Just like the SEC! ACC vs. SEC this past weekend---GaTech rolled over UGA, Wake beat up Vandy and Clemson beat up enemic South Carolina (Spurrier should fire himself)...sure FSU lost to Florida---but they were expected to.
The SEC is the fourth best conference maybe fifth...behind the Big 12, ACC, Mountain West and Big 10.

What's your point? Pointing out what everybody already knows? You think we can all sleep better tonight because you already knew how the season was going to finish, and that you will go down in history as being the guy who was right all along?

So true. I'm a major supporter of Coach Richt and the way he's elevated Georgia's program, but I wouldn't mind if he took a page out of Paul Johnson's book in terms of discipline. All the penalties and missed tackles come down to coaching. Hopefully they'll get the kinks worked out and we'll emerge as a real NC contender in the seasons to come.
Additionally, the SEC really is having a down year. It's difficult for me to say since I've long been a vehement defender of our top to bottom toughness, but this weekend's pitiful showing against the ACC is impossible to write off as a fluke. But hey, a third SEC national champion from yet another SEC school wouldn't be too bad, either. For that reason I grudgingly say, just this once, Roll Tide!
