This exclusive news arrives to us through our friends of Agoge Sports (an agency that represents several international agents in its interest to bring players to the Major League Soccer) who assure that the league and the representatives of Fernando Morientes -- a tremendous Spanish forward who began with Real Madrid, passed through the Monaco of France and Liverpool of the Premier League and at the moment plays for Valencia -- could begin to negotiate the possibility of adding him to Major League Soccer for the 2009 season.

He's a friend of JP Angel's and has been rumored that JPA recommended the move to FM who won't get much PT at Valencia in the coming years. He's not washed up yet, but he isn't exactly been lighting things up real recently either. Could be a good fit for the NJ Redbulls if Angel leaves.

just depends on the mindset of the player.... while not a top league, the MLS is not a simple pushover... even stars have to come ready to give it their all...

December 1, 2008  11:31 AM ET

He'd be a great addition to the league--still a talent who plays with great panache and heart.

Great player, wish he would get more time for Valencia, his scoring record is most impressive wile hes been there over the past few years. Would be a GREAT addition to our league.

Interesting. Could be another JP Angel

December 1, 2008  12:41 PM ET

I meant that as a good thing

Agreed that it comes down to what his mindset is.
Is it to still try and do well or is it to just collect a paycheck.

I would think with JPA whispering in his ear - it would be more to keep playing.

Love it...bring on Morientes, Mendieta, Davids, Figo and anyone else like them. The youth in the US need to learn from more than Arena and Schmid. Yes they are old...but they have a lot left that an up and coming player could benefit from.

Great addition no doubt. Does anyone know his contract situation? Will the team have to bid on him, or would it be a free transfer? I don't know that an MLS team is ready to bid on anybody yet. I do hope to see the day though when DC United can bid against teams like Stoke City, Recre, Valladolid or Monaco.

Supposedly JPA wants to head back to Argentina to finish out his career where he started, plus try and get back into the Columbian NT. FM would be a good replacement, he'd do well in MLS. I don't think Valencia would mind getting his wages off their books.

Im not sure who Schmidt is but I agree with you on Arena. But Gaucho is right, I'm not sure they all deserve DP money, but they would definately be contributing if they came to MLS.

This guy has much more talent and skill then Juan Pablo Angel. would be great if MLS could get this guy, after all it will only be a few people in the USA that know who this guy is and what he has done in Spanish Primera. But hopefully a step in the right direction for MLS

December 1, 2008  04:06 PM ET

He would be a good addition if he comes over.

December 1, 2008  04:33 PM ET

Ay Ay Ay! A little veteran leadership in the locker room is a good thing. Arena had his moment, it has since gone. Schmid just led his team to an MLS championship (an MLS one, not UEFA).
Not too many old guys though.

Maybe i watched a different Morientes over the years than everyone else here. I don't think he is a bad player, but i don't think think he is capable of carrying an MLS team, which should be expected from a DP. The more of these rumors about European stars coming to MLS for DP money, make me start to think that the DP concept isn't so great. I mean besides JP Angel, I can't think of one i would say was a success. Denilson was an absolute failure, Beckham has had mixed results at best, Schelotto isn't a DP, Blanco has done well, DC has Gallardo and Emilio and wasn't even in the playoffs, I forgot Claudio Lopez was even in KC, Reyna was pretty much a joke during his DP stint and I'd be willing to wager ljunberg won't be much help to Seattle. Obviously, I am biased, but not a great record of success.

I would really like to see Morientes in MLS. He is the type of player that can contribute to the league and its development. How much should he make? I have no idea. Just bring him!

Did you guys hear about the Rafa Marquez rumor? I just posted it on my site (MLSenEspanol.net). I know the source does not give any details but I felt is was worth publishing it...

I doubt they would go for both.

angel's on his way back to Boca anyhow....

but if you get both, better hope that you sustain ZERO injuries, b/c your team will be as thin as LA's 07 & 08 team with both DP's .....
