Is Pettitte a phony?

I tell you this as a way of saying no matter what CC Sabathia or Mark Teixeira get this offseason, I will again have no qualms. But I will if Andy Pettitte takes money from any team not named the New York Yankees. If Pettitte signs elsewhere, regardless of the dollar figure, he should be viewed as a world-class phony forever around here. There should be no more pardons. He should receive no invites to future Old-Timers Games, hear no cheers when the dynastic teams reassemble. In his moment of need, when it was revealed Pettitte was both a liar and cheater, the Yankees stood by him last season. At that time, Pettitte was only too happy to say the Yankees were the only team he ever wanted to play for any more. He did not say he only wanted to play for the Yankees unless they offer him a paycut. The Yanks have indeed offered that cut. Pettitte made $16 million last year and, according to sources, he was offered $10 million to return in 2009. So far, Pettitte has rejected that bid while his camp has done nothing to dispel reports linking him to Joe Torre and the Dodgers.

Let the boy retire. He likely ain't doing the roids with his boyfriend Roger, so he will not pitch good. ANYWAY he just wants to make another 12 million or so......IT'S ALL ABOUT GREED. These athletes are about as cheap as they come, but they want all the money. Pettite has lost the magic. Gone baby gone. Roger not here for you now. Get with the youth program. The Yankees do not need old lardo CC - either. Sign Texeria and get some punch to the lineup. These big pitcher contracts are way TOO RISKY.

Yes. But we knew that. He is a Clemons protege. Enough said.

I wouldn't sign him for no more then 8/9 mil for 1 more year. Andy's at best a 4/5 starter? Let Torre have him. Will the Dodgers pay him more than 10mil? No. It's time to move on Yanks! Sign Texeira for 7/8 years with an opt 9. Let C.C. go to the west coast. It's a lost cause when you offer a player a record setting pay day and they sit on their **** and wait for Mo Money! Learn from the past Yanks...Pavano? K. Brown? B Zito! these guys picked up their check on payday with them dark sunglasses and a ski mask.. Stay away from giving pitchers long expensive contracts.

Eight nineths of a million?

Nothing here this morning about Jason Varitek and Paul Byrd being offered salary arbitration? Interesting who they have NOT offered it to also: pitchers Bartolo Colon, Curt Schilling and Mike Timlin, catcher David Ross, infielders Sean Casey and Alex Cora, and outfielder Mark Kotsay. That's from the Providence Journal.

Attracting free agents must be tough if the Yankees have to use the press to badger and bully a guy into signing with them.......

December 2, 2008  08:14 AM ET

i lost all respect for pettitte when he took the 16 mil from the yanks because he knew he was going to be named in the mitchell report the next day...... he left the yanks out to dry, then they stuck by him and this is how he reays them? if he wanted to play in the new stadium so much and if it really "meant that much to him" then he should play for the vetern's min.

Actually, this is an article in the New York Post. It wasn't written by the Yankees. They have not badgered Pettitte into staying. They have set their price for what they deem a fourth or fifth starter is worth, and offered him $10,000,000. They won't be drawn into a bidding war with someone who faded down the stretch ALMOST as badly as Jason Varitek (oh wait, while Pettitte was good in the first half, Tek actually sucked all year long). While CC apparently doesn't want the bright lights of New York City, to say the Yanks have to badger people to play with them is laughable. But what do you expect from a Boston fan anyway? Not a hint of objectivity there - I mean, let's insinuate that all Yankees have done 'roids (thanks to a Board member of the Red Sox running the Mitchell report, what a joke) but no mention of Tek losing his offense, just as the steroid era came to a close. Yeah, that's objectivity for ya...

The world series is won on pitching guy, it's been proven time and again they have enough hitters to be successful, lack of reliable pitching last year was thier downfall

December 2, 2008  08:33 AM ET

Wow, a Yankee a phony? Shocker.

December 2, 2008  08:40 AM ET

Hey Joel would you take a pay cut if your writing was not up to par this past year. I didnt think so. If Pettite wants to go let him go. The media didnt really bash schilling when he pulled the same crap last year with a list of teams he wanted to play for. Although he only wanted to play for the sox if he got 9 million and didnt have to pitch at all.

December 2, 2008  08:48 AM ET

For a Red Sox fan to bash Pettitte after what Schilling pulled on you guys last year is a laugh. Pettitte was mediocre, but at least he pitched. What did your $9 million check to Schilling get you? You were played.

My bad Shooter, after reading the article I naturally assumed it had been written by hank Steinbrenner.

Thanks for letting me know it was written by one of the Yankee ***kissers over at the Post.....

December 2, 2008  08:57 AM ET

Well...it is my understanding that in these instances the player's "wants" are not all that matter.

The Union has a hand in this as well. If Pettite takes the $10m...he would be setting the market lower than it has been in the past. That not only affects him, but also the rest of the free agent market. Teams can use him as the measuring stick for other free agents.

While they sit quiet...the "Dark Side" (also known as MLBPA) is probably acting as the puppeteer...DANCE PLAYERS, DANCE!

Ha! If you ran the Yankees they'd be in the red forever! Eight ninths of a million, please. I wouldn't pay him a penny more than six tenths, and that's only with half a twelfth of four percent guaranteed.
