Weis tells recruits he's safe

Charlie Weis is certain he's returning as Notre Dame coach. And he's telling recruits just that. "He told me he'll be there," Inglewood, Calif., prospect Shaquelle Evans told IrishIllustrated.com after Weis' visit Sunday. "He said it's just the media spreading that he's going to get fired." There are a couple of caveats: One: It's doubtful that any coach has told a recruit he might be fired. Two: If A.D. Jack Swarbrick said no decisions would be made until the annual review next week, then he or Weis is fudging the truth. Just another day at the circus.

Well, duh... did you expect Weis to tell potential recruits, "well, I might be fired next week/month/year"?

December 2, 2008  07:37 AM ET

Weis said he would continue to act as head coach, and that it is exactly what he is doing. That is exactly what he SHOULD be doing.

After the last two seasons, Charlie might have better recruiting success by leveling with the players.

He should be up front and admit that he expects to get axed and that ND will aggressively go after Urban Meyer. Hell, he could name 69 other Division 1 "Head" coaches that had more successful programs than the one he ran in South Bend.

"Weis tells recruits he's safe"

Just does not sound right. Isn't that what two people who are about to go at it say?

December 2, 2008  08:24 AM ET

Weis tells recruits he weighs more than a safe

December 2, 2008  08:26 AM ET

The only thing Charlie Weis is "safe" from is Anorexia

Another great T&R from FanNation.

EXACTLY!!! That is why he IS PAID a Gazillion Dollars "Year Round" for coaching, buffet lines, recruiting, buffet lines, planning and, oh yes, buffet lines. Truth be said, when he sat in my double wide a few years ago trying to convince me how "dieting had helped him succeed," I had my doubts at that point about his long term coaching ability! Obviously ND did not! I just want to see ND return to National Ranking, not being "Rank Nationally"as they currently are!!!!!

He is supposed to tell recruits he's safe. That's common sense.

December 2, 2008  09:09 AM ET

Whatever happens CW will be laughing all the way to the bank with mega-millions from the golden domers who rewarded him with a ten-year contract extension after losing to USC.

December 2, 2008  09:19 AM ET

he'll be there by default, no one else wants the job

December 2, 2008  09:34 AM ET

This is basically a non-story. I would like to point out though that I would think twice as a recruit if a coach was in the position to have to tell me his job is safe... I wouldn't want to commit to playing for someone who might only be around for one more year, and then go through a rebuilding period during my prime tenure at the U.

Not exactly! With the unemployment rate so high, there MUST BE SOMEBODY out there......

Now thats funny!!!!!!!

December 2, 2008  09:44 AM ET

If they were going to can him, wouldn't they be doing that.... like NOW?.... The annual purge and hiring of the new crop has already begun with Tennessee.... if they wait, they won't have viable candidates.... and pining for Urban Meyer is not likely to bear fruit.... the guy is an ****, but not stupid....

December 2, 2008  09:45 AM ET

Has anyone heard anything about ND wanting Paul Johnson from GA Tech.... I know an insider who claims this is a virtual done deal. But, they're always so negative and paranoid, I don't fully believe it.... and I've seen nothing in the mainstream press about it....

December 2, 2008  09:59 AM ET

Chuck the Chunk couldn't even imagine a world in which his job isn't safe. That arrogant turd probably walks right up to the recruits, slaps his super bowl ring hand down on the table and says, "You want safe, this ring is safe. You can't slip this ring off my fat fingers even after a grease covered feeding frenzy at KFC."

December 2, 2008  10:05 AM ET

safe for what?.....safe from who?.....safe?

December 2, 2008  10:05 AM ET

Of course he is safe... have you seen his bank account?

"act" being the important work. He is not a real head coach
