Carroll has NFL options

With so many pro teams changing coaches -- possibly as many as three on the West Coast -- is this the right time for Pete Carroll to return to the NFL? It's nowhere near as simple as A-B-C. "I'd like to see it a different way," Carroll said of the BCS system, "but I'm not using that as an issue that frustrates me so much I would want to bail. Not at all. I don't care that much about it, and I don't give it that much regard. . . . I can't do anything about it." Unlike in other years, people in NFL circles haven't been talking about Carroll this season. They respect what he's done. They know he might be a good fit in several cities. They might even be on board with his desire for top-to-bottom control of personnel decisions. But for the moment, the big fish aren't nibbling. That's not to say it won't happen. Situations can change very quickly in the NFL, and some starry-eyed owner might decide to pry open his wallet so wide that Carroll simply couldn't refuse. But Carroll is paid handsomely where he is, with a total compensation north of $4 million, and people close to him constantly insist that it's not money that would persuade him to leave.

There are college coaches and NFL coaches. I think he is in the arena he was made for.

And how are the NFL teams gonna compete with his clause about getting to rent the songgirls at half price?

December 2, 2008  09:01 AM ET

Stay where you are. College football is better off with you. You have a wonderful thing going.

December 2, 2008  09:02 AM ET

Pete needs to stay where he is. He tried the NFL it didnt work. No need to try it again.

December 2, 2008  09:42 AM ET

Pete won't go back to the pros. He knows that he's made for the college game. He's well paid, he's on his way to becoming a legend at this level, and he's the King of L.A. He makes enough at SC that it won't be worth it for a little more to give all of that up.

December 2, 2008  09:47 AM ET

Logic doesn't always win over ego in these situations. I agree that he should stay but it wouldn't surprise me if he wants to try and overcome his previous NFL failure...

8 hour days

Do the math.

Agreed
I watched him on the Pats sideline for a few years and he had that deer in the headlights look too often. The players didn't buy into his college rah rah emotion, and his frustration with some of his players not respecting him all that much was obvious. Its just the opposite at USC.
He's got a good thing going, and if he tries the NFL and flops again, where does he go from there--TV Commentator?

Another year, another option for Carroll...what's new?

December 2, 2008  11:23 AM ET

Pete is the King of Los Angeles. Makes bank, amazing weather, gets the best HS players in the Nation... and they play HARD for him. Oh, and he contends for a National Title every year and settles for a Rose Bowl victory. Life for Mr. Carroll is GOOD... why go and EFF it up by taking over for the Browns or Raiders?

December 2, 2008  11:25 AM ET

Honestly? Your coaching a pro football team in college so why in the world would this be a consideration

December 2, 2008  11:26 AM ET

I bet somewhere deep down this article was originally written in 2004? Any most likely by Bill (Ladyboy) Platshke

December 2, 2008  11:32 AM ET

Pete will stay at USC, but he'd be the first call I made if I secured an expansion team for LA (which has to happen at some point). That would probably tempt him more than, say, the Detroit job.

December 2, 2008  11:36 AM ET

New beach house. nice weather, a great fit (as coach), $4 million, great run, school with great history and academics (for the Irish fans), his foundation, and I'm just guessing, a deep desire to coach this team from tripping up 1 game a year. Probably, 20 more reasons to stay.

I'M IN..........

December 2, 2008  12:04 PM ET

As an OU fan I would love to see Carroll move on to the NFL. He and his staff do a great job of recruiting. I know as a Sooner fan I always cringe at the thought of playing SC.

December 2, 2008  12:06 PM ET

he pretty much has an nfl team now.LA has no nfl team. why leave to go to a crappy team in the nfl? or have a team that is consistantly in the top 10 . i wonder?

He, like Saban, would have his pick of the best college jobs.

December 2, 2008  12:17 PM ET

Pete Carroll has arguably the most plum coaching job in football. Why would he take a demotion to coach in the No Fun League? The odds of that happening are somewhere between zero and zero percent.

December 2, 2008  12:22 PM ET

I wonder how much the NFL would fine him for wearing home jerseys at an away game?
