Columbus's Chad Marshall, the MLS defender of the year who is out of contract, might end up with a German club. His reps have apparently been in contact with a few teams. According to one source, his reps told a Danish club that they are looking to secure a $500,000 salary overseas. He earned $148,000 this year, not including bonuses and incentives. He could end up back in Columbus, but odds favor a free transfer to Europe.

it'll be interesting, for some reason everybody now wants to go to germany. I think its easier to break out there because the style of play tends to be more aggressive and the media tends to be less of an issue (except for Bayern, Bremen, and dortmund)

Some Americans also have done fairly well in Germany.

The post not only doesn't name a club, it also doesn't say what level. I hope it's Bundesliga.

rrasheed- doesnt germany have relatively lax foreign player standards?? unlike england where you have to get a Work Permit, which requires some fancy talking by a large club or 75% of your nations games for that year....

what's germany like?? anyhow, its not that everybody is wanting to go to Germany, its the german clubs expressing interest in Marshall... and why not?? a tall talented defender who's good in the air?? sounds like a wise cheap investment to me...

The Bundesliga is a fine place to prove yourself. No club was mentioned but hopefully it is one in the Bundesliga.

laws for guest workers are somewhat unusual, but relatively lax. For players from EU nations, there's absolutely zero hassel. To be granted an extension of stay though, for non- eu, for work, etc., would simply require some form of calleteral to garauntee that the person can sustain life in germany and require the neccessary task (can he play soccer, or for other situations, is he qualified)

Maybe Marshall's reps have an "in" with Hoffenheim? Wouldn't that be sweet?

No more Danish teams. Please. Any American who goes to Scandanavia to play is on my poo-poo list from here on out. Germany would be good. Holland is fine. Austria is on my low list. Of course the big leagues are very nice (SPA, ITA, ENG), Portugal is better than Norway any day, and France kicks the pants out of Sweden. But please, no more playing for the "Lutefisk-Nations" (actually I think American-Scandanavians eat more lutefisk than do their Euro brothers and sisters). I would rather see him play for the last place team in Portugal before playing in Norway!

whos he gonna play for? aalborg? Oohh big team. the US should have a trade embargo on Scandinavia for soccer players. going there is like entering the abyss, never to return. hope he makes the bundesliga

December 2, 2008  12:37 PM ET

rumors are turning that he may be joining MB in germany, but then again they are also interested in Gooch.... so who knows....

December 2, 2008  12:48 PM ET

NO!!! We cannot send an additional 2 Americans to a team battling for their lives in the top division.

Granted - they would do what the Americans at Fulham did - save the club from relegation but I would rather see Gooch and others go to side battling for things like European glory.

i agree, american players need to be smart about what teams they join. it doesn't make any sense to join a team that gets relegated. they may be able to help the team, but, ending up in the 2nd division doesn't do anybody any good.

If anyone needs an example...see Eddie Johnson.

The reason EJ is playing at Cardiff isn't because of relegation, its because he isn't good enough to play in the Premiership. Also, almost all EPL contracts come with an out clause in case of relegation which would explain why so many quality players jump ship on a relegated team. If they're good enough for the top division usually a newly relegated team or others will pick you up after the drop. See Eddie Lewis, when Leeds was relegated from the Championship, eventually he moved back up the ladder. If you're good enough this does happen.

As for M'gladbach. They won't struggle much longer in the Bundesliga--especially if they get Gooch over the winter break. Hee Haw.

December 2, 2008  02:35 PM ET

I don't think M'gladbach is going to get Gooch...they offered $4 million for him and Marseille offered up $6.5 million and a player going the other way to Liege.

from what ive read on the many soccer sites, M'gladbach is interested in both Gooch and Cooper..... i think the Marshall rumor is linked as they are interested in Gooch, and Marshall is getting interest from german sides....

December 2, 2008  06:15 PM ET

OK...I get that the going to the Nordic leagues isn't exactly "sexy football" BUT...let's say a Danish club offers Marshall the contract he's looking for. That was roughly a 338% increase in his pay. I guarantee that if an accounting firm offered me a 338% pay increase...I'm moving Iceland if I have to.

Let's hope it's a Bundesliga club so we at least have the chance to see him play once in awhile.

December 2, 2008  08:15 PM ET

there are so many american players in Bundesliga and 2.Bundesliga I am surprised that there isn't a better covering by SI.

December 3, 2008  10:07 AM ET

Yes, the money can be tempting. I understand the pull. Still, I am sick of the Americans going to Scandanavia thing. I accept it as a reality, but it doesn't mean I have to like it.

How does MLS allow these players to be out of contract??!! It's definitely a money issue. If I were Chad and I knew I could get more overseas, why would I extend my existing contract?
The economy is certainly not helping but this is another excellent reason why MLS has to review it's salary cap.
