He's a good player, but not what a DP should be. I imagine that the scenario described here--aging player approaches MLS about a DP contract--probably happens rather frequently.

havent heard anything about him... my memory of s.korean players from 02' are a bit shakey :-/..... but either the DP's are going to be used as marketing tools or to fit a specific role..... again i dont know much of anything about him....

I remember him a little bit but I wouldn't give DP money to him. If he's willing to take a little less then bring him over.

If anything he could be used in marketing campaigns.

Can't say I remember him either, but what I do know is that S. Korean and Japanses players love to play at a frenetic pace, so it would be interesting to see how they would fit in the MLS

He can come over but it shouldn't be with a DP slot.
Seattle will need some depth...maybe even San Jose but Ahn - swallow your pride...if you still want to play, you may not be able to push for DP money.

He's an average player at best, far from a DP, his career has been very average, besides the WC2002 he hasnt done much to distinguish himself. However if Chivas USA signs him then you may have a good showing from the local Korean community.

Metros, that's a great point about the community in LA. It was funny two years ago that when LA hosted the "World Series of Soccer" or whatever it was called at Home Depot Center, Suwon actually attracted a larger (or at least more vocal) group of fans then Chelsea did...

There is no doubt the South Korean soccer fans are passionate supporters.

I was at the South Korea v. Togo group match at 2006 WC (bought the tickets from Togo supporters - scalpers took advantage of the South Korean fans and how much they would pay...) and the SK fans made Frankfurt Stadium crazy loud. They were a major part of making the atmosphere of the match a lot better.

We will have to ask a real Galaxy fan on this but the LAG had Hong Myung-Bo, one of the most famous SKorean players ever, on their squad for two seasons. I know at first people came out and watched him but I dont know if the publicity held up for the two seasons he played. But then again why are we even talking about Ahn... I'd much rather go get Nakamura or someone like Park Ji Sung who can contribute on the field

I think Nakamura is pretty much set on a return to the J-League.
But we all know money talks more than anything else.

I think it's all but a done deal. His family went back home after giving it a go, and he wants to follow them.

I remember Ahn was removed from his club team, Perugia, the day after he scored the winner against Italy in 2002. I don't think he's work DP money. I remember Myung-Bo brought people to Galaxy games and was decent, but he was already old entering the league.

This is quite interesting. Hwan is a good player, no doubt. Not DP money, but i think a team will man up and go after him.

He's no where near DP-quality.

And the fact that he's floated around so much in the last few years also doesn't speak well for him.

I just checked up on his history and stats.

Hwan has NEVER done well anywhere outside of Korea and Japan. He's floated around so much because he's struggled everywhere else he's gone. And this guy wants a DP salary? That's sort of an insult to the league, tbh.

And now most recently Hwan's gone back to Korea, and he's doing poorly even there. In fact, he's only been relatively decent with the Korean national team, on the whole. Technically his rate of scoring for the Korean nats is a goal every 1 in 4 appearances (which is pretty good), but the bulk of the goals came earlier in his career.


In sum, I would say Hwan doesn't even command an MLS salary in the upper echelon of the non-DP pay-scale. He'd be a mid-level player in the MLS.

Agree with all that say he isn't worth DP money. Since his WC goals hias career has really been on a slow but steady ride downwards.

If he was a Hispanic South-Korean, MLS would swoop him up.

Nakamura is a free agent this summer so you never know, although I doubt we can compete in terms of salary with the J-League. Ahn is not really the pure striker so his stats will not always reflect on his ability, I think his agents think he deserves DP money simply due to his publicity... if you sign him you will have a legion of Korean fans interested in MLS, hes actually decently well-known among Chinese and Japanese fans as well.

Ahn is too old but he does create a lot of scoring opportunities for his teammates..he is a basically one of those players whose value are more than what the stats indicate
I'd like to see Park Ji Sung play one day in the MLS though..lol
