Mets to woo closers in Vegas

The next step in the Mets' slow-moving search for a new closer looks like it will come at next week's winter meetings. Free-agent closer Brian Fuentes plans to be in Las Vegas to speak with Met GM Omar Minaya, his agent told The Post yesterday. Fuentes then hopes to visit New York and tour Citi Field if the initial meeting goes well. Minaya will be busy with the closer issue in Las Vegas after the agent for Francisco Rodriguez said late last week that he also planned to meet with the Mets. The Met GM appears to have the upper hand, as there's little, if any, competition for either K-Rod or Fuentes. One reason is the economic crisis that so far has put a chill on free agency. Another is the fact that most other big-market, big-budget teams are set at closer. Sources said the Mets' first choice is Rodriguez, 26, who set the single-season record with 62 saves last season for the Angels. But the Mets would be just as happy with Fuentes, the sources said.

Still like better a trade for Jenks (White Sox) giving up all the necessary pitchers from the bullpen (which sucks!!!). Like a trade with the Sox including Jenks, Dye and Vazquez. Mostly, will solve three problems at once! Of course, they will finish second, one game behind whoever wanted to be there (phillys or marlins)...

I still think it will be K-Rod. Doesn't matter unless they can get someone to hold a lead until the 9th inning anyway. I hope Omar revisits the Huston Street for Heilman and Feliciano deal.

Signing Fuentes rather than K-Rod will save atleast 5 million dollars a year. I think the Mets could use that money to fill other holes that they have.

No chips? I think Kenny Williams would make the trade in a split second if the Mets offered him Jonathan Niese, Fernando Martinez or Mike Pelfrey for Jenks.

It befuddles why any team would want Heilman. He was absolutely atrocious in spacious Shea Stadium. Him at Coors would be like batting practice for the opposing team.

Given the Mets history of free agent signings, perhaps they should sign John Rocker.

December 2, 2008  04:28 PM ET

haha, you want jenks dye and vasquez? good luck with that. throw in every good prospect for dye and jenksy but vasquez will come free of charge. well, pay his salary. we'll frikkin throw in javy since he sucks in big games. he's like superman with pms. he's really good at times...but just when you need him...he's bad to have around. good luck trying to get him a W in a big game.

the phillies finally make it to a world series and win, and now all of the sudden they think they are the new yankees. prove yourself more than one season and then start to run your mouths.
