Charlie Weis will return for a fifth season at Notre Dame despite another disappointing year, several media outlets reported Tuesday night. WNDU-TV in South Bend, The South Bend Tribune and several other media outlets, citing anonymous sources, reported Weis will be back next year. Athletic director Jack Swarbrick did not respond to repeated phone messages and e-mails from The Associated Press on Tuesday night. University spokesman John Heisler declined to address the reports.

The Wisdom of ND? This is making as much sense as bailing out Wall Street. Well, let me see if there is a silver lining in this deal............(1) ND game tickets will be cheap. (2) All the fast food dumps around the campus can rely on another good year if "Big Boy" is in town. (3) Teams like Navy (who ND keeps on the schedule as a presumed win) will have a great shot at a win. (4) Vegas will lose money as ND opponents will cover the spread easily. So, with all that said, I am good with the decision!!

Botched 4 hirings in a row why would they get the Weis exit right. There are plenty of recruits that will believe ND will return to glory even if it is fifteen years and counting with that last two poor even with a no glory year schedule. Kind of sad that ND can not see the obvious.

YEEESSS!!! - A Notre Dame hater! Another wonderful season of chortling over Sorry Charlie's weekly humiliation. Vegas odds that the Pope ex-communicates the whole football team by mid-season 2 to 1.

ESPN is reporting it, so we get closer to South Bend getting bent over!! Must be because they have picked up a couple of losers for next year's opponents. I bet Central Catholic High School in Pittsburgh can beat them! Save your money (whatever is left) and bet the farm against ND in 2009!! I can hear the howls of their alumni as I type this!!!!!!!!!!!

December 3, 2008  07:44 AM ET

where was the hidden camera when they announced that one? would love to see the look on folks faces when that announcement was made.

HOOOWWWWLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! JM&J!!! SMofJ!!! The only good news is that I don't seen anything on the Web indicating that CW's contract is being extended or that he will be given an additional food bonus! But then again, there MUST BE SOME logic behind the apparant decision.

December 3, 2008  08:29 AM ET

I don't know how I feel about this one. I am hesitant to think there is any evidence of Weis being capable of turning this thing around, but always think its unfair not to give a coach at least one year with all his own players...

College football needs ND to return to their old selves. I liked them better when they were perennially given much higher bowls than they deserved and lost big time.

December 3, 2008  08:45 AM ET

Did anyone really think ND was going to get rid of Weis? He can go 2-10 and people will say give him another year. I hate to say it but his best years was with the previous coach's players! All the reports say the class he has brought in are great but that doesn't mean you can just put players on the field with no coaching and they will win.

Will Weis win in 09? Who knows but the guy should be gone already.I would love to see him do good but I just don't think Weis is a good head coach. There are some people who are great at being a Vice President and some who are great at being a President. I think Weis falls in the VP role.

December 3, 2008  08:52 AM ET

Oh this is just to good! I'm so happy Charlie is being retained because that will insure another dismal season next year. Yep, someone there is afraid to pull the trigger and I have every confidence that will just a little luck ND won't even be bowl eligible next season. Keeping a guy that's all about himself, nothing about the program or players is the right thing to do for ND. I hope they keep in 5 more years because by then there won't be anything left of the ND program except some memories......

Its all about the buyout $$. They can't afford to pay him off and bring in another coach. Of course Charlie would not resign for the benefit of the team either.

It actually is not about buyout money, what is left on his contract is nothing for the boosters to take care of, it would be like one private jet.

At least there will be one game on the schedule that the Wolverines MAY have a chance to win next year... :-)

December 3, 2008  09:13 AM ET

There must not have been anyone else out there. He's going to have to win 9 next season but they have an easy schedule.

However wasn't that the case this past season?

December 3, 2008  09:54 AM ET

I think it is really pretty simple. If he doesn't get to a BCS bowl next year (deserved or not) he will be gone, buyout or no buyout. ND will not let that much cash slip through their fingers another year.

that Michigan ND game will be great next year

This is GREAT news... We get to witness another year... Of sub-par football from the domers.... And oh yeah.... If you don't get 9 wins next year... At least... Your coach completely stinks.... Seeing Weis will have had his recruits.... In his system... For 3 years... And your schedule... Is softer than all those rolls Weis puts away

December 3, 2008  10:23 AM ET

I think one more year will do ND good. If Weis doesn't get his players to perform next year, then show him to the door.

December 3, 2008  10:27 AM ET

I say that b/c they went 3-9 in '07 and now 6-6 in '08, so they're steadily improving. If ND regresses in '09, then there's no reason for that. An 8 win season is the least, and very least, that Weis should put out next season.

I think they will have to use the door for shipping and receiving. Your standard plain door won't do.
