How Horns can still win national championship
The best chance Texas has to be crowned national champion this season likely lies with the members of the media who vote in The Associated Press college football poll. The Longhorns are the latest team to feel slighted by the Bowl Championship Series, though the twist this time was coach Mack Brown's team has the Big 12 to blame as much as the BCS standings. The tiebreaker not only put the Sooners in position to win the league championship, but a win against Missouri virtually guarantees Oklahoma a spot in the BCS national title game in Miami on Jan. 8 against the winner of the Southeastern Conference championship. But Texas still has hope. If Missouri beats Oklahoma, Texas is the presumptive next-in-line to reach the BCS title game. The Tigers (9-3) don't seem to be up to the task of stopping the Sooners, who have scored at least 60 points in their last four games. Missouri is a 17-point underdog, and its only two losses last season were to Oklahoma. Depending on the Tigers leaves the Longhorns a long shot to get to Miami. Texas might be better off turning its attention to the AP poll. If Alabama were to win the BCS title game, the Tide would be undefeated and undisputed national champs. Florida goes into the SEC title game ranked second in the AP poll, so logic dictates the Gators would jump to No. 1 by beating the Tide and stay there if they win the BCS championship game. Texas was No. 3 in the last AP Top 25, ahead of Oklahoma by eight points. Unlike USA Today coaches' poll voters, who are required to put the BCS championship game winner No. 1 on their final ballots, the 65 AP voters don't have to put the winner of that game on top of their final ballots. So if Oklahoma wins out, and Texas wins its bowl game, presumably the Fiesta Bowl against Ohio State or maybe Utah, do the 40 AP voters who had Texas ahead of Oklahoma last week -- most by one spot-- keep the Longhorns ahead of the Sooners when the final poll comes out in the wee hours of the morning on Jan. 9? The answer, of course, is maybe.

Everyone talks about wanting / not wanting a playoff system... A much simpler solution is to take the top 10 teams from the final BCS standings (after the conference championships) and distribute those games to the 5 BCS Bowl Games. (1 vs. 2 in the BCS Championship game, 3 vs. 4 in the Orange Bowl, 5 vs. 6 in the Fiesta Bowl, 7 vs. 8 in the Rose Bowl and 9 vs. 10 in the Sugar Bowl.) Of course the Bowls would rotate each year like they currently do with who hosts the next set of great games... I know - I know (what about the bowl tie-ins and tradition) but the only bowl with some form of tradition that I know of is the Rose Bowl with its Pac 10 vs. Big 10 game... Who really HONESTLY cares in this day and age - times change (imagine if Oregon State got the automatic bid to the Rose Bowl with USC still sitting up there all pretty at #5 in the nation.) Who cares about the winner of the ACC conference championship getting an automatic invite to the Orange Bowl Game. Or that the Big East Champ gets an automatic invite to the Orange or Fiesta Bowl Game. Throw conference champions out the window - they should only be bragging rights within the conference and mean nothing else (imagine the hoopla this year if Missouri manages to beat Oklahoma and goes on to represent the Big 12 ahead of Texas, Oklahoma and Texas Tech.) Nobody cares to see Boston College or Virginia Tech (possible ACC champ) Cincinnatti (Big East Champ) or Missouri (possible Big 12 champ). All that really matters is who is in the final BCS top 10 standings, so my vote (currently) would be for the following (if the current BCS ratings were AFTER the conference championships):
BCS Championship Game - 1. Alabama vs. 2. Oklahoma
Orange Bowl - 3. Texas vs. 4. Florida
Fiesta Bowl - 5. USC vs. 6. Utah
Rose Bowl - 7. Texas Tech vs. 8. Penn State
Sugar Bowl - 9. Boise State vs. 10. Ohio State
WOW! what a bunch of GREAT BCS games that would be!!! But instead, we're gonna end up possibly watching Cincinnati vs. Missouri in the Fiesta (Toilet) Bowl...

they could try a revolutionary approach and have a playoff system instead of voting on who they think is better or would win in a actual show down. lets the kids decide it on the field and let the sports writers write about the games.

Give it a rest already. Texas isn't ahead enough in the AP Poll to hold off Oklahoma AND Florida/Alabama, especially with those teams playing not only the National Championship Game but also conference championship games. Can we please stop beating a dead horse?

Just reading this made my head spin. The college football bowl system is the most inane and idiotic system in all of sports. I love seeing the havoc these computers and polls create, and then hearing the BCS' John Swofford try and convince the populace that the current system is the best one. Just be honest and say it's about the money. Why are the higher ups so resistant to change?

A PLAYOFF SYSTEM is OVERRATED and anyone arguing that it SHOWS who is the BEST team in the NATION is a FRAUD. A playoff system simply shows who is best AT THAT TIME, ie NY GIANTS were 1-2 vs Cowboys last year and 1-1 vs NEngland. OKay NOW someone ARGUE that the GIANTS were the BEST team in the NFL last year...THEY were 10-6 and DIDNT EVEN WIN DIVISION. So THAT WHOLE "PLAYOFF system gives us the BEST TEAM".. IS DEAD WRONG AND DISHONEST; just another argument by those with an agenda
This article says it BEST, the MEDIA has to give them (FEXAS) a NATIONAL Championship, THEY DIDNT EARN IT ON the FIELD, NO MORE THAN ANYONE ELSE.
People are ARGUING this FEXAS thing as IF THEY ARE UNDEFEATED.
ANSWER this; IF HEAD to HEAD is SOOOOO IMPORTANT, why is FEXAS ahead of TTECH??? HELLOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
And if you come with OOC schedule, well the combo of TTech and FEXAS' OOC conf schedule doesnt even come CLOSE to OU and thier victories ( OU is the ONLY,,,,,repeat ONLY team in the NATION to have victories over 4 top 25 BCS teams; INCLUDING BLOWOUTS of CINN, TCU, and TTECH check all of their BCS rankings.)
THE MEDIA fraud is FLORIDA, YES I said FLORIDA...they have a loss to a 8-4 OLE MISS team AT HOME.......FEXAS, OU, TTECH all have losses to teams who were in the TOP 5 of the BCS...actually FL loss is WORSE than USC's LOSS
AND who are the victories by FL? The beat UGA (so did GA TECH), LSU (yeah okay check their record), KENTUCKY (whatever) and S.Carolina (CLEMSON throttled them)...
THE SEC is WEAKER this YEAR and FL is there based on Reputation......NOT quality WINS

I have a question.
Since the Big 12 Title game has already been decided, and the BCS is most likely going to take a second Big 12 team, who should go? The BCS is only required to take the Big 12 Champion. The second would be an "at-large" invite.
Oklahoma is already in, so that leaves Texas and Texas Tech.
Now since Mack Brown, and the ENTIRE STATE OF TEXAS are screaming about "head-to-head" matches, it just makes sense to me that Texas Tech should get the nod over the Longhorns. After all, Tech did beat Texas "head-to-head."
Wow Texas, I bet you never thought that "head-to-head" could work AGAINST you, huh?
Now as interesting as that scenario is, its not going to happen. Texas will get the nod, and deservedly so. Texas is clearly the better team than Tech, despite losing the game. So maybe, JUST maybe Oklahoma is a better team than Texas despite losing the game.
Cmon guys, it is what it is. The system sucks, and the only logical fix is a playoffs. But since thats unlikely to happen anytime soon, we're stuck with what we've got.

It's simple. If Mizzou beats Oklahoma then they are in. There is no need for the rest of the logic.
By the way, I am sick of this story.

Actually, any BCS team that finishes in the top 4 of the BCS gets an automatic bid. By rule, the BCS has to take Texas.

Texas will take a BCS bowl, the media is beating this drum. Anyway, we all know Oklahoma chokes in BCS games against inferior opponents. Makes you wonder what a team like Florida will do to them.

Oops, You are correct. I found it. My bad.
But my point is still there. Tech could claim "foul" over being ranked behind Texas, just like Texas is complaining about being behind Oklahoma.
But I stand corrected about the BCS invites.

But that is my POINT about the whole FEXAS argument....they will get in over TTech....but they LOST TO TTECH.......and they benefit
LOL....AAAWWWWW someone figured out the "FEXAS".......LOL......
INTERESTINGLY no comments on the FLORIDA issue I raised......BTW I think it also puts into some QUESTION the BAMA ranking......YES in SEC they are UNDEFEATED.....but check their WINS......wow they had to go OT vs LSU (27-21)

JREEL, GREAT POINT...but TTech doesnt have the COIN to get the argument brewing....if ya know what I mean...
THE FEXAS argument would be agreeable IF IT WERE LOGICAL and OBJECTIVE, but it is NOT, and if you keep the same logic going, it itself back onto them....DUHHHHHHHHHHHHHH....because it
IS A 3 WAY TIE
