What is Sabathia waiting for?

Are the Yankees headed for another Randy Johnson situation when dealing with CC Sabathia? Johnson orchestrated his way out of Arizona to The Bronx for one reason: Yankee dollars. As Johnson discovered, money often doesn't buy happiness in New York. Now it appears Sabathia, who is light years ahead of Johnson as a teammate and person, may only land in the new Yankee Stadium because of the $140 million offered across six years. Though Sabathia's wife, Amber, would like her husband to pitch for the Giants, and though the Angels have the money, neither club has shown a strong interest in the 28-year-old lefty, who went 17-11 with a 2.70 for the Indians and Brewers last year. According to several sources, the Giants have money to invest in Sabathia, but can't come close to the Yankees' deal. A week ago it was reported the Angels were preparing an offer for Sabathia, but that seems to have cooled. That leaves the Yankees as the only horse in the race. And since the offer has been out there for more than two weeks, it makes you wonder why Sabathia hasn't inhaled it.

Perhaps...because it is New York?

Say what you want...pitching in Cleveland and Milwaukee isn't like pitching for the Yankees.

He probably is really trying to decide if he wants the tremendous microscope of the NY Media. They are not very kind. Face it, Several cities are very tough to play in including Boston.. Can't blame him for thinking this one through. He probably prefers the Angels, but when you are talking about possibly 20 million dollars difference... And we don't know if he is getting union pressure to play for the highest dollar to drive up overall salaries.

I"m a Yankee fan and don't want this guy...at least for that price. He's simply not worth it. His numbers were dramatically inflated after he went to the weaker NL. He's had two good seasons in his career and a slew of average ones.

The fact that he hasn't already accepted the biggest deal for a pitcher in the history of the game from the most storied team in the game tells me he doesn't want to be a Yankee...which has trouble writen all over it.

No thanks.

He is waiting for the buffet table incentive to be added to the contract

Or any sport. Probably why LeBron won't ever play in NYC. The media won't leave him alone for 5 minutes now, and he doesn't even play there!

Maybe he doesn't want to play for a dysfunctional franchise like the Yanks and is waiting on other offers?

"who is light years ahead of Johnson as a teammate and person" Really? Wow.

He's waiting for anyone on the West Coast to offer close to what the Yankees are so his agent can get more from the Yankees.
Whenever you hear that there are factors besides money the factor is the money.

December 3, 2008  08:42 AM ET

if he doesn't want to sign with the Yankee's then he should tell them, so we can move on and get some other guys that are wanting to play for the Yankee's. I am a huge Yankee fan as well, and you know if he does sign great he can help us win, but if he doesn't sign i am not going to be that upset.

December 3, 2008  08:42 AM ET

Yankees suck !!! so do Sox !!! Both LOL As for CC ... he was overworked hard in Mil. and he'll do a Colon fall due to injuries. Only the Yankees are foolish enough to throw the $$$ at CC, didn't learn from past mistakes, I reckon. New Owner ??? Same technique

You may have a point. Girardi is a health nut and doesn't allow much in the clubhouse. There maybe a cheeseburger and pizza rider that they want written in.

He's waiting for whatever he wants to wait for. Who's kidding who? He'll get exactly what he wants, when he wants it. Lets just hope what he wants isnt a little bolivian orphan boy dressed up like Madonna.

13 years in a row in the playoffs and 89 wins last year. Hank now with token power and Hal running the team, George out, $800 in revenues in the coming year. new ballpark and after next year just about all bad contracts out. Where is the dysfunction?

Under the best of circumstances I couldn't care less about Bolivians much less orphaned ones. If he pitches well he can spend his time off in an all male Laotian orphanage.
