Spurrier takes jab at Kiffin

Steve Spurrier lost a longtime sparring partner when Phillip Fulmer resigned from Tennessee. But it did not take long for the South Carolina coach to go after new Volunteers coach Lane Kiffin. Spurrier questioned whether Kiffin committed an NCAA recruiting violation a day before he was introduced as Fulmer's successor Monday in Knoxville. Adding to the intrigue is that former Gamecocks recruiting coordinator David Reaves, Kiffin's brother-in-law, has joined Tennessee's staff as quarterbacks coach. On his first official day with the Vols on Monday, Reaves ran into three South Carolina assistants -- Steve Spurrier Jr., Ron Cooper and new recruiting coordinator Shane Beamer -- while recruiting at Hargrave Military Academy in Virginia. Reaves' leaving for an SEC East rival already has created a stir. According to a story published on VolQuest.com, a fan site that is part of the Rivals.com network, Kiffin and Reaves called Tampa, Fla., running back Jarvis Giles on Sunday and left him voice messages. The NCAA requires coaches to pass a certification test before they can contact recruits. During his introductory press conference, Kiffin said he took the test last week. Earlier Monday, before Kiffin's explanation about taking the test, Spurrier jokingly suggested Kiffin might have called the recruit as "an interested observer."

Spurrier can't be mad at Reaves's for leaveing, after all, he is kiffin's brother in law. but after watching lane's press confrence monday, i have a feeling that the barbs will continue to fly from both coaches

I agree with vaughn, it's a "welcome to the club" comment

Also, Spurrier can't dump on Fulmer anymore so he's gotta dump on Kiffin.

It's just Spurrier giving the new kid a hard time. Also the new kid took one of his coaches, even if it is Kiffin's brother-in-law, and possibly taking one of his recruits (Jarvis Giles who verballed to Tennessee, switched to South Carolina, and probably will switch back to Tennessee).

Just letting him know who is boss....

Is a 3rd string long snapper giving Spurrier a BJ a violation too? Cuz someone should make a call.

December 3, 2008  11:17 AM ET

With the sorry status of the Shamecock program, he needs to concentrate on his pathetic team and leave Kiffin alone. Whiny girl probably missed a tee time to talk to the media.

Just the Ol' Ball Coach being himself; he can't help being nasty, it's in his genes.

When has he not taken a jab at another coach... that is what makes him who he is

You know what makes USC look really really bad... Spurrier was able to take DUKE to a National Championship and can't get that Gamecocks to even sniff the SEC East

You know what makes you look really bad? The fact that Duke has NEVER played for a National Title. In 1989, Spurrier took Duke to the All-American Bowl, where Texas Tech hammered them 49-21. They have not been to a bowl game since...

spurrier should be happy that his recruiting coord is leaving, because he has brought no talent to that team to even talk about!

Spurrier is so annoying. He takes jabs at everybody now.

December 4, 2008  06:39 AM ET

Spurrier needs to keep his mouth shut. It's not like he is in contention for an Sec. title or National title. South Carolina is a poor excuse of a football team!

Come on man - can't you take a joke? two seconds into his coaching tenure at UT and Darth Visor accuses him of cheating. it's funny, admit it.
