Tigers interested in Rangers' catcher

From the No Big Surprise Here Department, the Tigers have maintained contact with the Texas Rangers about catcher Gerald Laird. The Tigers have liked Laird for some time, and, despite not having a surplus of the big-league-ready starters that the Rangers seek, they remain in the running to acquire him. He is regarded as a good catch-and-throw guy and batted .276 this season. Right now, the Tigers have a better chance of acquiring Laird than Miguel Montero of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Montero is appealing to Detroit because of his youth (25) and left-handed bat, but it does not appear that the teams have compatible rosters from a trade standpoint.

Tough decision for the Rangers, which one to trade, Laird or Salty, both are young and both have alot of potential.

Personally, we may be in the running but i dont see us with the pitching that the Rangers would be looking for unless they want a potential fifth man in Willis or Robertson. Both of which are lefties and one of which if not both could use a change of scenery...

Good lord- two Tigers threads in the same day?
Someone break out the space heaters... Hell just froze over.

As a Tigers fan, this is first rumor this offseason I would be excited if it happened. No offense to Varitek, or Lugo, but we need some solid role players that aren't stop gap retreads.

I think our need at catcher is bigger than at Shortstop. Let the young guys grow into the SS position while Santiago starts.

I have yet to see a rumor about a relief pitcher that 1) is a clear upgrade and 2) is a feasible get for us. I do hope we resign Freddy or keep Willis now that we have a new pitching coach to fix them.

Sounds like Freddy mighta **** up his shoulder again bro- might take the pass on him and see what the new guy can do with Robertson and Willis. And word of Rogers calling it yet? I still think he would be an awsome closer. The man always likes the pressure and can easily go out for a couple of innings and ground out the other team pretty effectively.
Much agreed on a trade we can finally be excited about though, this off season has been duller than crap! Especially for Detroit where they usually act fast... But then thats what happened when they traded for Sheffield then the next year for Renteria- and I guess we know how that worked out...

Renteria is a hard trade to swallow, especially when watching Jurrjens. I guess the flip side is we would have never gotten Gallarraga without that trade going down, and they had similar numbers...

I was really hoping that they replaced their bullpen bench coach with Jones or (if he hung them up) Rogers. Rogers as a part time closer as they develop a young gun would be interesting, that is for sure!

Laird for Robinson and a mid level prospect seems right. I don't think it is a question of who to keep. Salty is only 23 and Laird is approaching 30. I think Salty calls a better game and is a switch hitter, but Laird has the better throwing arm. Just make sure you hang on to Salty and Teagarden. They are both young and potential stars one day. Do not let Boston get ahold of either!

Give us a package including Porcello and the Tigers can have Laird.

Rangers haven't seen good pitching in a while...they would take anyone. Apparently they like having four Catchers

In other news, Brandon Lidge is prepared to pout regardless of WHO they get.

It's that kind of crazy thinking that has the Rangers in the position they are in!
