Giants waited hours to report Burress shooting

Giants brass admitted Wednesday they knew Plaxico Burress accidentally shot himself minutes after it happened - but the team didn't report the incident to police for at least eight hours. Even as team execs tried to distance themselves from the coverup of early Saturday's nightclub shooting, investigators turned up the pressure by revealing they will subpoena cell phone records from Burress and teammate Antonio Pierce. The Giants acknowledged for the first time that Pierce - who was with a bleeding Burress at the Latin Quarter - called Ronnie Barnes, the team's vice president of medical services, moments after his teammate's illegal gun accidentally went off around 1:50 a.m.

So Mayor Bloomberg will try to shut down the Giants too, just like the Latin Quarter and the Hospital?

This is not such a big deal. No doubt other execs had to be notified, especially the legal experts on the team. But they came clean, so it should be a non issue.

Why would the team be responsible for reporting this incident? The club, Plaxico and/or the hospital have an obligation but not the Giants. If it had happened in the lockerroom I could see the Giants being scrutinized if they'd waited hours but not under these circumstances.

I wish SI would quit reporting news about all these people who dropped the ball in this unfortunate occurance.... Who cares about all of the ends and outs that only add controversy and harsher punishment on an already remorseful knucklehead?

it is a non-issue....

December 4, 2008  09:28 AM ET

Looks like obstruction of justice to me....failure to report a known shooting with an illegal firearm.

December 4, 2008  10:42 AM ET

Well Foolberg will now go after Barnes

I would have loved to hear that conversation........

Just another coverup attempt like the Adam Jones with his bodyguard incident. These guys have been covered for ever since it appeared they could play a game pretty well.

This is just the final stage in the process once they hit the bigs.

Is the "remorseful knucklehead" really remorseful? - is obstruction of justice something we should just cast aside because its people involved in a sport?- was Rome built in a day? - did Hitler really bomb Pearl Harbour? - (I think my mind just snapped)

they should make the Giants play their games in NJ. that'll teach em. wait..never mind.

December 4, 2008  01:44 PM ET

Why would they wait? what? did they want to make sure he wasn't with pacman at some "scrip" club being "rebellion'?

December 4, 2008  02:04 PM ET

Wait what? Why the heck would they have to report this? Unless obligated by law, you don't report it. Period. You make sure he's healthy, ok. They don't even know the whole situation at that point.

If I was the giants I'd grow some nuts and say, that's not our job. Wouldn't the police love for everyone to do the job for them.

Bloomberg applying some pressure? Three Words. New Jersey Giants. Bloomberg's tail would tuck so fast ...

December 4, 2008  07:05 PM ET

Its not good for anyone to REPORT an incident without getting the facts first

December 5, 2008  06:06 AM ET

Trade Plaxico to Dallas soon. George W. can only pardon him before Jan. 20. He can room with
Pacman, and compare gun stoties between games.
