Despite 20 phone calls from friends and family Wednesday night saying Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville had resigned, Douglass linebacker Jonathan Atchison, an Auburn commit, had to see for himself. Atchison, a 6-foot-3, 212-pound member of the AJC's The Georgia 150, said he is still committed to Auburn but is now going to weigh his other options. He has nearly 15 offers with Alabama and Florida recruiting him the hardest.

Not a good year for coaches of Tiger football teams. Tommy @ Clemson and Tub's @ Auburn.

Over/under he's coaching somewhere else next season? Wash? 'Cuse?

December 4, 2008  08:38 AM ET

3 SEC jobs...all the coaches had one bad year....Croom Coach of Year LAST year...Fulmer...SEC Championship Game LAST year....Tubberville beat Alabama 6 in a row and has an incredible win loss record...are the replacements going to be that much better????

I thought all these kids pick a school because of the "academics" first and coaches second? So why would a coaching change change anything about where these kids go to school since the academics haven't changed?:P

Mississippi State would make some sense for a guy who's coached at Ole Miss and Auburn.

There are 119 D1A schools, and only one can win the BCS. Its sad that so many schools have overinflated expectations on their programs. No one...repeat no one.... can keep a program up forever. Tommy was a great fit at Auburn. Sorry to see him go.

Croom had many losing seasons. Way to follow up that 8-5 season. Fulmer had two losing seasons in the last 3 or 4 years. That's unheard of at Tennessee. Tuberville's Auburn team couldn't score a touchdown to win a game for all its life. I actually do not agree with the dismissal of Tuberville; it's all related to Saban.

As for the recruit, Gainesville is a wonderful town....check it out!

Clemson should have waited.

He sits out a year and picks up the pieces at T A&M. Sherman was a bad fit.

Come on over to Alabama, Mr. Atchison. They're building winners there.

Miss State is the Siberia of college coaching.

WOW Alabama really laid it on these coaches. Beat down clemson, affects their whole season and their coach is fired. BEAT down Tennessee and their coach is fired, BEat down LSU and they are in a funk for 4 games, same as Clemson. Bama just beats them into submission.

Beat down Auburn and their coach is fired. WE beat them until they don't want to play anymore.

Sure they consider academics... riiight.

The reason a coaching change affects them is college recruiting is kinda personal ebtween the kid and the coach. The coach is selling himself and his system jsut as much as the school. If you are a great running full back and a power I football coach is recruiting you, he gets canned and they bring in a spread guy... guess what, you are leaving for another power running school so you can get some game time. Same thing if you are a pocket passer and the new coach is a option guy.

Croom averaged 4 wins a season. He did have to go. The others probably outstayed their welcome with the fan base.

True. I wouldn't be shocked if State goes with some low priced alternative but if they ever want to win something again they might want to call Tuberville or Fulmer because both of those guys are good and know the conference.

As a Bama fan it's hard to see why Tommy had to go. I'm not saying that I am unhappy to see him load up the U-haul, but... What is wrong with those folks down at Auburn? Tommy pulled off an amazing feat by beating Alabama six times in a row. Sure he had a down year, and was destroyed by the Tide, but the Tide are #1 this year. If I was an up and coming Div-1 coach I would choose Washington, Syracuse, or Clemson before going down to the Plains.
