Sources: Sarkisian interviews with Huskies

A Washington coaching search cloaked in secrecy grew only more intriguing Wednesday. Sources confirmed that USC offensive coordinator and assistant head coach Steve Sarkisian had interviewed for the job, while there were also varying reports on Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach. Leach is confirmed to have been in Seattle on Monday and Tuesday for an interview. If he came in for a second interview - as was reported in several places - it would indicate the seriousness of his candidacy. Leach, however, was also linked Wednesday with the Auburn job, which came open when Tommy Tuberville was let go as coach of the Tigers.

Wow! I wounder how this will paly out for the offense with Chow, Kiffin and Sarkisian gone

December 4, 2008  09:24 AM ET

Why doesn't anyone give Norm Chow a chance? That guy would walk to Seattle for a head coaching job?

December 4, 2008  09:26 AM ET

How can he coach and star in the crappy reality show at the same time? What's it called? Keepin Up with the Sarkisians? Isn't he married to Bruce Jenner or something?

Why has the USC defensive coordinator been mentioned for head coaching jobs? The defense seems to be the model for consistency in that program, not the offense.

Nick Holt (the SC defensive coordinator).... Was the head coach at Idaho a few years back... Things didn't go well there... So he came back to SC... Anybody that hires Sark... Hopefully understands things wont get turned around right away.... Washington sounds like a good fit for him

Would be a good hire! Two good things can happen from this, SC gets weaker in the coaching ranks, and you get a coach who obviously knows how to beat SC. The real question is he a better recruiter than Pat Hill or Mike Leach?

Thanks for the info. I didn't know that.

Still holding out for Leach, but great picture of Sarkisian. He looks like he's overheard this conversation and is NOT happy about it.

$3.5 Mill will get leach up to Washington and if the same money is offered by Auburn-- well lets just say Washington has no chance

Actually, take it from this SC fan: I think this would make SC stronger in the coaching ranks. Sark's handling of the offense has been no help to SC. We haven't had creativity and good use of the talent since Chow left. The offense this year has been mediocre despite the great talent.

Carl Smith is set to take over the offense...and that's not exactly a downgrade.

I agree. USC has struggled at times on offense and that has probably kept them out of the NC game the last few years.

I think a healthy Jake Locker would attract any offensive minded coach. and with young players at the (shaking while typing) 'skill' positions, and many returners on a brutal defense, it would be a fun project to take the reigns of. Plus, whoever takes it will need to get a bigger wallet!

December 4, 2008  04:54 PM ET

I just hope the Huskies hire someone soon or it will be "Kieth Gilbertson Part II" Not enough time to recruit, not enough time to earn the respect of said new head coach

December 4, 2008  06:05 PM ET

Gotta agree Jamesbt... Sarkisian designs cutesy, inconsistent game plans... I just don't get it; the talent on offense he has and the unwillingness to exploit it.

December 4, 2008  06:07 PM ET

Agreed - it would be great for SC if Sark left.

December 4, 2008  06:24 PM ET

Pat Hill can Coach. He is driven and is a motivator. Sark is in a system where the synergy of players, coaches makes it all work. Kiffen, Sark and Chow are good or to some great #2 guy's. But thats also why so many would fail, when they get into the #1 chair.

December 4, 2008  06:28 PM ET

Pat Hill took himself out of the picture according to the times. Supposedly Leach is next to do so.

December 4, 2008  09:54 PM ET

The UW job is one of the worst in football. The cupboard is bare on talent, except for Locker, who will get hurt again next year. The "old days" of UW are gone - no more Don James summer jobs, steroids, or poaching recruits from Oregon (where both UofO and OSU were terrible) and Northern Cal (where Cal was terrible and most UW recruits couldn't get in to Stanford). Well, even with a good coach, those recruiting grounds are gone - UofO is good, Oregon State is good, Cal is good - heck even Boise State is good. UW doesn't have the pick of the player in the NW part of the country anymore, and most high school recruits for 2010 and beyond will have grown up thinking of the Huskies as perennial losers, not as a former powerhouse. The alumni all think if they just get the right guy, it will be one Rose Bowl after another again....

Sarkisian can't be that dumb to take the Washington job. That program has proven to have serious problems and it can't be all from bad coaching. Besides, why would Steve leave the comforts and $$$ of USC to go there. Now if he were to go to say Auburn, that would be alot different.
