Nice guy Theus on hot seat

Kings co-owner Joe Maloof shouldn't have blasted coach Reggie Theus two weeks ago, but the family owns the team and can say what it wants. Hey, the Maloofs have their Ma-loot, and I have this space. It's difficult to believe Theus is as nice a guy as he seems. But he's about to "nice" his way right out the door. Winning ugly I know about, but losing ugly is too unsightly to continue for long. Before Theus gets toasted, here's a little butter: The Kings are the softest team in the league. For a moment, there was a thought of softening that statement. On second thought, that statement is on point. For those who believed Ron Artest had to go, well, here is what's left. No doubt, the injury-related absences of Francisco Garcia and Kevin Martin have hurt the Kings. Yet there's no way a team permits the opposition to score so many easy baskets unless it is soft. Neither the presence of Garcia nor Martin will affect that. It's not about a scheme or a system. It's about having tough players on your roster.

The Maloof's are trying to coast on their long gone persona. While I subscribe to the notion that "attitude reflects leadership", the truth is you can't coach heart or desire. Without the benefit of knowing what's happening within the Kings organization itself, I think it's only right to look at things from the top down, including the Maloof's. The should ask themselves if they've given all they can to putting a quality product on the floor and is there a connect between the personnel and the coach. I don't know if Reggie Theus is the right person to coach this team, but whether or not that is the case should have been addressed before they hired him. Obviously they thought he was the guy to bring them the type of team they wanted. It just seems that the question they didn't ask themselves is if the team as it is suits that vision as well. If not, then it's "their" bad and not Theus'. Again I say that a top to bottom evaluation is in order and the Maloof's should lay off the criticism until they can look at themselves in the mirror and know that they gave the guy they hired the best chance of succeeding.

The Kings have nothing resembling a team right now. It's not fair to Theus to be on the hot-seat with that collection of talent. He needs time for them to grow up. He should at least be able to get through this season, and if they falter next season then you can fire him a couple of months into it.

Any coach who's team struggles is gonna face being fired so this comes as no surprise.

John Salmons is my hero

Fire this scrub!

December 4, 2008  09:57 AM ET

They've been soft for a long time! This isn't new. They need a whole new facelift.

December 4, 2008  10:04 AM ET

He's next. Give him 2 weeks tops.

Enough said!! Nobody is going to make any significant improvement in Sacramento with this roster. Reggie is probably a lame duck, but until there are some changes in the thinking at to top, the results aren't going to change. It wont matter who the coach is.

is sacramento still in the NBA?

December 4, 2008  12:41 PM ET

brad miller should for a more consistent point guard and to let hawes and thompson develop.... hinrich would have been ideal but he is injured.

maybe they should ask the bucks who they want for ramon sessions...

December 4, 2008  01:20 PM ET

Well, at least he won't be on the hot seat for long. I'll give him three weeks max. Ouch!

December 4, 2008  01:20 PM ET

This is not the coaches fault, he does not have any good players on the team besides Martin and Martin is too little to make a difference, dont fire the coach, fire the GM for giving this team to the coach.

Will be the next to get the ax.

This team is trying to re-create the style it had with Divac, Webber, Stojakovic, etc. They may have some of the right pieces, but those pieces are very young. It doesn't appear that the veterans are really providing veteran leadership, and maybe it's because they know they are mainly something to wipe your feet on on your way to the club's future.

Everyone (including Theus?) must have known that he was hired to connect with this group of youth, see what happens for a couple of years while the kiddie corps gets collected, then hopefully begin making a run starting next year, or the following. That future only includes Theus if they make remarkable progress. So the subject of his employment should be moot until at least after mid-season.

December 4, 2008  06:28 PM ET

Brad Miller's not soft. Salmons and Jackson are good players. I think they were softer with flopper Divac and perennial playoff-bust Chris Webber.... softest team is probably the Thunder or the Lakers... and I'm a Lakers fan!

December 4, 2008  06:31 PM ET

I think Dunleavy will be relieved of his duties... Theus shortly thereafter... maybe Memphis after that

those who have never played pro ball have no right to say who's player or team is soft or not.

it's not fair to fire theus with the assembly of players he have. but when things are going bad the coach is always the first to go. eddie jordan did a phenomenal job in washington and when the team piled losses because of the injuries he got fired.
