Why Notre Dame kept Weis

In the end, after more than a week of review and a face-to-face conversation Tuesday between Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick and coach Charlie Weis, the school announced that Weis would be back for a fifth year on the sideline - with a profound emphasis on changes that must occur. Swarbrick said no specific number of victories in 2009 will be satisfactory. But it is clear what won't be enough. "From none of our perspectives would a repeat of 2008 be acceptable," Swarbrick said. So that makes it back-to-back seasons that ended in "never again" for Weis, whose program is 9-15 in the last two years after winning 19 games and earning two Bowl Championship Series bids in his first two seasons. So although the athletic director offered no specifics, expect a host of moves, beginning with assistant coaches and proceeding from there. Swarbrick said he also believes, despite the apparently lifeless efforts that plagued the second half of the Irish's season, that Weis still has his team's ear.

Sweet.

Despite the spin coming out of Notre Dame, the reality is that , once again, they couldn't get any Division I Head coach of any stature to express interest.

Their best bet is to tweak their schedule and load up on teams with losing records who place little emphasis on their football programs.

Wait a minute....

The readl reason they kept him is because his agent slipped in a clause that ND didn't pay much attention to. It said in addition to whatever the agreed buyout amount is... that ND would also pay for all of Charlie's food through the duration of the contract time.

Who is on the schedule next season? Are they going to try to win the Commander in Chief trophy again?

December 4, 2008  08:55 AM ET

As a big Michigan fan, I am thrilled to see Charlie back! With the improved Wolverines playing the Fighting Weises, I feel confident of a Michigan victory. Thanks, ND!!!!

I think the powers that be at ND aren't too swift. I'll bet the big boy doesn't last through the season next year. It will eventually get too embarrassing for them and they'll finally axe him although far too late.

He was only retained for one reason, he is white. He sure as hell can't coach. Look at his record against teams over 500 and look at the performance of the team since he took over playcalling (Navy game). He is a joke, a fat one at that.

Ty must be furious right now.

All you ND "experts" really help me start out my day with a smile...Thank you!

As a Navy fan, I am elated that they are keeping Tubby. Means we have a great chance next year! Sad to see that the ND alumni let this happen. must be spending their money on crack or weed. Agree that Ty got the shaft. Maybe ND could not find a big enough shaft for Tubby....... For all haters of ND, this is a good move. At least 1-4 more seasons of watching them lose!

Ty knows that everyone else knows he got a raw deal by what ND did to him. But, times are different and there isn't anyone out there that ND can bring in and change the direction of this semi grounded tanker called ND football. And the fact that ND has another cupcake season next year helps Weis get some solid footing, assuming that ND doesn't blow it again like they did this year with a VERY EASY schedule. One thing is for sure, I hope UM kills ND next year.

They couldn't find anyone else.

Thank you for your attempt. Your certificate of participation is in the mail. Sorry I ruined your Black Pantha Party!

Translation....ND got a complete paranoid hardon for this guy during year one and offered him a 40 year contract for 100 gazillion dollars, and the guys in the smoke filled room cant see fit to fire him quite yet.

My thoughts exactly.

What is important in this "announcement" is that the AD is putting down some goals and guidelines for retaining CW beyond next year, despite his contract. For the first time the school's spokesperson is saying officially that CW's job is on the line and if the team doesn't show serious improvement next year it is Bye Bye Charlie.
Personally, I don't think he is capable of motivating college-age players, and delegating sufficient authority to his assistants (so he is not attracting the best assistants), but we will know next year won't we.
I wish him well, but am not holding my breath.
