Auburn asked Tuberville to stay

Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville's job was not in jeopardy when he decided to step down and he declined several requests from his bosses to reconsider, athletic director Jay Jacobs said Thursday. Jacobs said Tuberville's departure after 10 mostl successful seasons was "completely his decision" and that the coach would be leading the Tigers next season if he had not chosen to leave. "To say the least, I was a little shocked," the AD said. "But after three times of asking him would he change his mind, he convinced me that the best thing for him and his family and for this football program was for him to possibly take a year off and take a step back. "I asked him three times (to reconsider), and so did the president," he said. Jacobs said he and the president agreed to pay Tuberville the buyout price of $5.1 million -- even though it was not required since he wasn't fired -- because they felt it was "the right thing to do."

This has been a confounding week of college football coach carousel. How in the world is it that Tuberville is out at Auburn (don't believe a word of this BS story - he was forced to resign) and the "offensive genius" keeps his job at Notre Dame? Does the BCS also decide what coaches stay and go?

Yeah I am not buying that story either.

Let see, coach resigns, and by contract is not eligible for a buyout, but the universtiy (out of the goodness of their heart?) pays the buyout anyway?

He got canned folks - just ask the assistant coaches wives.

Auburn is trying to do some damage control but if Tuberville really resigned the University wouldn't have given him 5 million. He was bought off.

Love the expression on this guy...."Huh? I don knowwwwwwww"

Same thing tht happened at Clemson to the other Tommy this year.

He resigned... but yet the school is kicking him a few million for his buyout... even though Bowden's contract was a 2-way buyout, if he left early, he was supposed to pay the school

Don't forget Phil Fullmer at Tennessee as well. As some have stated on here if he truely resigned why pay the buyout? They are also paying the buyouts of his assistants.

December 5, 2008  10:11 AM ET

well yeah the guy got canned ..... no right minded college would just give their money away to a man quitting his position that they wanted to stay ......
the pres. & ad have the board to answer to ........

December 5, 2008  10:32 AM ET

Give me 5 or 6 million to step down as coach of your team? Two questions, you got a pen and where do I sign?

Followed by, "I'm next"

There's no way they would have paid them "out of the goodness of their heart". The boosters paid him because if he resigns, he doesn't get paid and the taxpayers would have some standing to sue the school for paying someone that kind of money if not legally obligated.

He was fired, the boosters paid him his money, and they worked out between them what they thought would be the best story for all involved.

December 5, 2008  11:11 AM ET

I cannot believe that this AD can say what he did with a straight face. The guy must be sociopathic. Either that or stupid. No AD in his right mind pays a coach to leave if he doesn't want him to leave. And we all know the reputation Auburn has regarding the boosters control of the Athletic Dept. Bad stuff.

More importantly... 5 or 6 mil that they were in NO WAY required to pay!!!! LOL. At least if you believe this story....

And what's the point.. it just makes him look like a tool and an idiot.

That guy is pretty goofy looking with that expression...
This was the best way to go about it, saying he resigned when he probably would have been fired if he dug in his heels. When did a University ANYWHERE do something because it was the right thing to do? Especially if it involved paying him $5 million bucks...
Tuberville had a bad year and it was compounded by the embarrassing loss to Alabama. He could have lost all of the other games, beat 'Bama and still had his job. People are insane about that rivalry down here.

I live in Florida, have a "football house" in Auburn, and I will tell you, the AD just made a fool of himself and Auburn University...Tuberville was a great coach for Auburn, and a wonderful ambassador for the University...I am sad to see him kicked to the curb ....he deserved much better than this..go to oanow.com and read about what happened at Tubs house when he got home....this will tell you the REAL story. Everyone knows he got canned or they wouldn't be paying him. So they had a down year yet a couple of years a ago he goes 13-0 and they tried to run him off campus then i think he knew it was time he left i hope he or Fulmer gets the Miss. St. job and stays in the SEC. Shoot both at the school would have recruits wanting to go there with 2 proven SEC coaches

December 5, 2008  12:21 PM ET

Yep, he got canned....just like the 10-15 assistant coaches he canned himself....karma just caught up with him.

LOL, "UABsuckx". You hate UAB that much?
