Spurrier: Why SEC is better than ACC

South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier was not happy when Perry offensive lineman Johnnie Farms recently switched his commitment from South Carolina to North Carolina. And you could almost visualize The Old Ball Coach throwing down his visor when Farms told the AJC that part of the reason for his change was because "the education is a little better [at UNC] than South Carolina." What did Spurrier do about it? He traveled to Perry, which is located 105 miles south of Atlanta, on Tuesday in an attempt to convince Farms to take an official visit to South Carolina next weekend. And Spurrier brought his own academic research for the AJC Super 11 selection. "[He] compared the graduation rates between the two schools," Farms told the AJC's Phil Giltman. "He said South Carolina is No. 6, and North Carolina is No. 15." Where did Spurrier get his research? Farms said he doesn't quite remember. Many but not all coaches go by the NCAA???s Graduation Success Rate or Academic Progress Rate, and North Carolina finished higher than South Carolina in both 2008 reports for football. Nevetheless, Spurrier also gave Farms a long talk about the advantages of playing in the SEC over the ACC. "He said the SEC is by far the toughest conference in college football," Farms said. Spurrier also told Farms that the NFL "recruits more players from the SEC than the ACC." Did Spurrier's speech work? Farms said "there is a good chance I'll go [on the visit], but I'm not sure" and confirmed that he remains committed to UNC.

SEC is by far the toughest conference in college football? Sorry Steve, not anymore.

Yes, a down year for the SEC and they are what, #2? Says something about how long the Big 10 is, huh Wrigley?

I'm fine with the crown of "best conference" going to the big 12 this year. They've had a good run in 2008 and they are stacked with good play. This is a down year for the SEC.

Year in and year out, the Big 12 and the SEC can debate this - and the Lil' 10(er 11), the Slack 10, and the two basketball conferences can watch the debate, but much like those who don't vote in elections, they have opinions that don't matter.

December 5, 2008  08:55 AM ET

Spurrier is like that kid that can't help but find ways to annoy and piss off people. Hey ball coach, have a brain tumor on me!

December 5, 2008  08:56 AM ET

One thing the ball coach did have right... the SEC might as well be the NFL's minor-league

December 5, 2008  08:57 AM ET

The SEC is better then the ACC. We don't need Spurrier to tell us the painfully obvious. Even in a down year, the SEC was better than the ACC.

December 5, 2008  09:18 AM ET

Who is he to talk? Let Urban Meyer or Nick Saban tout the SEC. Spurrier was 1-1 against ACC teams this year.

You must not be old enough to know that this "best conference" thing goes in circles. Just don't be a "dumb" fan and say things that will be the opposite in two years. We know that in sports that things that are up...must come down at some point. It doesn't matter who you are.

December 5, 2008  09:33 AM ET

Spurrier is clearly delusional.

The SEC is not even close to being the best conference this year.

6 years ago the Big Ten and the Big East (Ohio State and University of Miami FL) were 2 of the strongest conferences in college football. Last year Oklahoma was supposed to walk over West Virginia, because the Big 12 was so powerful. The year before Boise State made the Big 12 look bad too. 2 times the Big 12 got upset in bowl games. Way I see it and many others is that today the conferences are very close in power to each other. I won't put down the SEC, Big 12, ig East or ACC, because I know on any given day these teams can win over each other. What happens if the SEC and Big 12 loses all their bowl games and the Big 10 and Big East win all theirs? I don't think any conference can claim to be the best until there is a playoff for a fe years and we see who comes off on top year after year in a playoff situation.

December 5, 2008  09:50 AM ET

To me, so what? It clearly states that his main concern was his education, of which why he was selecting UNC. Good for him, a kid that realizes how tough it is to make in the NFL and how important a good education is. So what if he plays for the ACC or SEC, of whatever- its all about him being looked at, with TV, and UNC being a big time program under Butch Davis, if he is good enough to make the NFL, he will. He does not the SEC to that.

You are right, college football has changed in the last few years. It used to be maybe 1 or 2 upsets per YEAR, now its 1 or 2 per week.. All the conferences have grown closer together talent wise..

Graduation rates are a different story.

December 5, 2008  10:25 AM ET

I have to say that this story is loltastic.

December 5, 2008  10:28 AM ET

Even the best conferences have down years, this just happens to be the SEC's year. The Big 12 is the best conference this year, let's see if they can duplicate that feat next year.

December 5, 2008  10:33 AM ET

Spurrier is just trying to say whatever it takes to land the kid. If the SEC was better then the ACC would not be 6-4 against them this year. Half of the SEC wins have come by UF who is probably the best team in the nation. Take them and Alabama out and the SEC only has one win against the ACC. Ol Steve also gets owned by Clemson at the end of every year so that has to tick him off as well.

Looking ahead to next year things might be even worse for the SEC. UGA will take steps back after loosing their best players to the draft. Auburn and Tennessee are multi-year rebuilding projects. LSU is losing key linemen on both sides of the ball. Even if Ole Miss makes the jump that leaves the conference with 3 good teams. In the ACC FSU, Ga Tech, Va Tech and UNC are all returning most of their key players. NC State will be better and so will Miami. Add in the fact that most of the media jumped off the SEC bandwagon and admitted that UF and Bama are the only powers left out there and the SEC lovefest in the polls is over.

I (as an SEC fan/alum) cannot argue with the idea that the SEC is a better football conference than the ACC, but in the coming years UNC has a great shot at being a better football program than SoCar. Graduation rates are a joke. A college can easily get players to graduate. UNC is a far superior school to SoCar and Chapel Hill is a far better place to be a college student than Columbia.

top 25 alabama,florida,georgia,ole miss...
georgia tech, boston college

-two bcs schools (sec)
-only have one because it's guaranteed (acc)

the highest ranked team isn't even in the conference championship.

It may go in circles, but the SEC is NEVER out of the debate. You can't say that with the other conferences. That's not "dumb" fan, that's fact.

I know it stings the Big 10 to lose relevance when you were so much a part of the landscape of the debate, years ago.
