Wolverines conspicuously absent from banquet

Rich Rodriguez is always open and willing to discuss almost anything. But when the topic of personnel arose at Thursday's U-M Football Bust at Laurel Manor in Livonia, the Michigan coach declined to discuss specifics. The Wolverines are in a transition phase and, as he pointed out last week, there may still be some attrition among the players. Yet many of those situations are still developing and, with the end of the semester at hand, he doesn't want to talk about anything unless it's official. So observers are left to notice the absences from the Bust -- where all of the players sit on a two level dais at the front of the room. A few players were apparently not in attendance, notably freshman tailback Sam McGuffie, junior defensive end/tight end Carson Butler and tailback Avery Horn. Rodriguez, who had mentioned McGuffie's distance from his Texas home and from his younger brother last week, refused to talk about the players or his staff on Thursday but spoke generally about his past two weeks.

You forgot to mention all the domers who get to take a break from sweating about all the Weis stories...

Is McGuffie going to transfer? For some reason that's what I get out of Rich Rodriguez's statement.

Actually it wouldn't shock me if some players do jump ship. It would be tragic but not all that surprising.

8 Mile.....you Detroit people know that when you stink, you might as well say it first, before someone tells you. At least you recognize it ahead of time and don't make excuses........

I've heard rumors from several sources about Mcguffie. It would not be the end of the world if he left. I personally think he is too small...seems like he gets totally waxed on half of his carries.
Butler...It is is really sad he did not turn out better...he had boatloads of potential but didnt do anything this season. I think he was the best player on our offense this year(as far as pro potential) but after a few games, you would not even have known he was on the team(I think he got in trouble).
Horn...If he transfers...big deal...he is blistering fast, but he is not gonna play here.
Shavodrick Beaver is graduating high school in a couple weeks and moving to ann arbor, this should help speed up the transition a bit.

Rich Rodriguez's biggest problem is the fact that the talent he had in Pat White and others at WV made him believe their sucess was all his as coach and not his players ability. Otherwise he would not have bailed from such a great program and high paying contract. I don't think he'll last long at UM.

December 5, 2008  10:05 AM ET

Its the second coming of Charlie Weis. I don't understand how any U of M fan can get behind this guy. He blames former coaches for his problems, the changes he's trying to make, etc. What a disgrace to the great U of M coaches. This guy is nothing but excuses and will be 4 and out. Its no coincidence that players did not show up Football Bust. Let alone the Buckeyes, Michigan will end up being Northwesterns b@#$!

December 5, 2008  10:52 AM ET

Turfman you are giving Dick Rod way too much credit. He will not last 4 years. The Blue Heads will soon see that he is a fraud.

December 5, 2008  11:00 AM ET

Looks like Karma might be a hard pill to swallow Dick Rod! The about-face you pulled on West Virginia tooks juevos, but it was in an attempt to improve your career...perhaps forgivable. The shenanigans that followed regarding refusal of payment on your buyout...etc. is where you made yourself look like a jerk. Now your players are not responding well to you, they have no confidence that your system will work, and your alumni are going to start growing restless when you lose more games next year. I think Dick Rod and Charlie The Ego should stop trying to revolutionize football and become celebs and start trying to win a football game.

When is the last time that coaches looked at their schedule and saw Michigan and Notre Dame and thought "Well, there's a sure win" I watched Phil Fulmer's last game at UT last week and realized something...even if you are not winning every week, you can still be a good coach. A little class and humility goes a long way. Unfortunately Dick Rod lack class, humility, and WINS.

You hit the nail right on the head. The Spread Offense is dependent on having the right players to make it work. WVU has Mat White, Florida has Tim Tebow....my alma mater Appalachian State (which has worked with both to pick up this same offense) has Armanti Edwards. If you have that talent you look like a genius, without it your offense looks like a car with no wheels. If Rodriguez cannot retain some of his current talent and get some top-notch recruits his days will be numbered.

Settle down, RR's recruiting class addresses every need that this team has. It is ranked 8 in the country but if you were to do a ranking based on how efficient this recruiting is, it would probably be #1 in the country.
Who knows if RR will ever be dominant...I sure don't know. I am positive he is better than 3-9 though, im sure that he will not be as big of a joke as charlie.

Thank goodness for Tate and Beaver both graduating early and getting on campus early because one of them has to start next year. I think we all saw that Threet and Sheridan are not the answer for Michigan.

You said No i told these guys id work for them and I am gonna have to pass on this better job. Let it go guys. Coaches jump around all the time, just like players do. I mean are you that irrational? have you been living under a rock? Just started following college football? Anyone who doesnt understand why RR took a BETTER job is a bafoon. You need new material, you haters are way too predictable, I dont even know why I let you get me all worked up. YOUR IDIOTS! Hey how do you get a OSU grad off your front porch?? Pay him for the pizza!! you never heard that one before huh? GO BLUE!!!

for real, this year was atrocious but next is gonna be a track meet. I think they win 7-8 games next year even with a freshman QB. Early enrollment for these two kids is going to make all the difference in the world.

Judas effin' priest! Let the man get a couple of classes of his own recruits in before you start calling for his head! I love how people are calling Rodriguez a jerk and questioning his makeup. He was hired to WIN football games not a popularity contest. Funnything.......Spurrier, Stoops, Saban...all ayeholes. But people pay less attention to that when you are winning.

Dude, relax, there are two ppl from Ohio on this thread and neither one said anything negative about the University and only one had a comment about the coach's credentials and coaching style... it's not the end of the world.

December 5, 2008  01:58 PM ET

How many games will he have to win to compenstate the $4mil buy out, negative press, '08 season record, and the loss of an '08 bowl pay out? Lloyd was a good coach, I hope it was worth it.

McGuffie was M's prize recruit. Threet isn't a bad QB. You can't depend on incoming freshman to win you games. Good luck.

Also, you should know by now there is no such thing as an unbiased opinion in the world of college football.
