Why Auburn isn't interested in Mike Leach

Texas Tech coach Mike Leach reportedly interviewed earlier this week for the soon-to-be-vacant Washington coaching job. But Leach withdrew his name from consideration Thursday, according to a Tech source with knowledge of the contract talks. Leach also was linked to the Auburn job Wednesday after Tommy Tuberville resigned. Various newspaper reports, quoting anonymous sources, said an unofficial Auburn representative gauged Leach's interest. But the Tech source said Auburn officials told Tech that "they're not interested in Leach" and that he "doesn't fit well in the SEC." That leaves Leach and his representatives -- Gary O'Hagan and Matt Baldwin of International Marketing Group in Minneapolis -- waiting for a formal contract offer from Myers. Baldwin declined to comment Thursday.

after their disastrous experiment with the spread, there was no way that the Tigers were going to get a coach that runs the spread.

December 5, 2008  08:19 AM ET

Leach withdrew from Udub because Sarkisian was getting the job.

Funny, if you read the Alabama rags, Leach is the primary, with numerous "officials close to the process" confirming this. Now a Dallas rag says Auburn "officials" aren't interested in Leach. Why would Auburn "officials" contact Tech to say "BTW, we don't want your guy"? No way that call happened. Auburn would take Leach in a heartbeat.

Nope... Aubrun wouldn't touch a "spread" coach with a ten foot pole right now

December 5, 2008  08:58 AM ET

If Auburn wants Leach he will be their guy.

I dont think you hire a spread offense coach after firing an OC who was a spread offense coach. However, with a fresh staff coming in, maybe they could make it work. The problem with Franklin was that none of the other coaches knew the spread or how to coach it. Tubbs dint allow Franklin to bring in his own staff to coach the team. I'm still mad at Auburn for he way this firing was handled. CTT was a good coach and fit well at Auburn but the powers that be at AU felt like he had too much power. I also disagree with the comment that a spread coach wouldnt fit in the SEC. I think Meyer at Florida has it working pretty well.

December 5, 2008  09:10 AM ET

I odn't think Leach would go to Auburn anyway. With all the pressure to win in the SEC, I believe he would rather be a big fish in a little pond (Lubbock) than have to deal with the fans and such in the SEC.

Why? Because it doesn't work? As they get torched by it from Florida every year? It didn't work because they weren't good at it....but people with common coaching knowledge know that you can't change a whole offensive philosophy without first changing you personnel. First mistake Auburn made......why not give it a chance? Oh, because Leach would probably actually win............

There would be pressure in the Big 12 after awhile too. He cannot keep playing second fiddle to the Longhorns and Sooners. That little pond won't be big enough for Texas, Oklahoma and Texas Tech to share.

"they're not interested in Leach" and that he "doesn't fit well in the SEC."
translation; We think your offense is a gimmick and we deserve something more superior. Redemption would be the sweeting thing should they meet at TT's offense gives them fits.

To nahlij1:

Any one with common football knowledge would know that Auburn beat UF in 2006 and 2007. I believe one of those years Ohio St. played UF as well.

December 5, 2008  10:56 AM ET

I heard one of the big reasons Leach is still a TT is because he is a horrible interrviewer. He comes in acting weird and eclectic and saying off the wall things.

There is no way that kind of interview would go over well at Auburn.

December 5, 2008  10:56 AM ET

The spread offense isn't why Auburn, or any other SEC school won't hire Leach. It is because of his time as an assistant at Kentucky with Bill Mummy. That whole staff got bounced over recruiting violations, and there's no way an SEC school would open themselves up to that scrutiny, or look to reward Leach in any way...

Actually, he can. Expectations are WAY diffrent in Lubbock than Austin/Norman. There is nowhere near the tradition there. I think he has a good gig there. He should parlay this year's success into a big payday and stay put.

He wants to go to the meat grinder that is the SEC? Leach is a different cat than Meyer, Satan or even OBC or Miles.

Very believable. He is different. Personally, I find it kind of refreshing but could well see how the staid, old guard would be put off.

Gotta agree with you Gator....not only would they take him in a heartbeat, but they would also build him one of those pirate ships behind the end zone.....like the Tampa Bucs have.

Leehouse, Before you post another comment and make yourself look silly, please get the names correct of the people that you are talking about. It is not, "Bill Mumme," rather, "Hal Mumme." I played for him and Mike Leach at Valdosta State University. Just trying to help!
