Emmitt: Current Cowboys just 'mediocre'

Emmitt Smith has one word for the current Cowboys. "Mediocre." The NFL's all-time leading rusher and three-time Super Bowl winner said Thursday he was disappointed in the team's 8-4 record. And he questions whether the current players have the fight in them to win in December and reach the playoffs. "[I'm] disappointed because I saw this team being a lot better than it is," Smith said. "Chemistry has a lot to do with it. And for some reason, the chemistry of the Cowboys this year has been thrown off a little bit. "Either there's too much salt in the gumbo or not enough meat in the gumbo. Something's wrong. Whatever it is, they need to get it corrected. It's just been a blah kind of season for me." Smith gave his thoughts while attending an event at the new Cowboys stadium in Arlington. During a 10-minute interview, Smith questioned the team's toughness and their desire to win Super Bowls all while mixing in a Jimmy Johnson-style pep talk.

He's a brutal broadcaster, but he's dead on right with this statement.... Cowboys need to crank it up a notch or two if they want to go anywhere....

It's hard to take Romo serious sometimes with that goofy smile.... he should have a sit-down with Aikman about leadership....

LOVE THE HEADLINE.....lol

Never really liked Emmitt till today. Great show down this weekend, Go Pitt.

Yeah some leadership from both sides would be good, don't think anyone fooled around on Aikman or Haley back in the day. I recall some withering stares from Aikman to E Williams on the untimely "off sides" calls.

Emmitt Smith was a throwback. Old time tough. I still remember him beating my Giants for the division championship running with a dislocated shoulder. He is correct, but the Cowboys only have to turn it on from here on out. They still have the talent.
Odd that Phillips is giving some guys more time off so they will be rested. Tells you something though. At a certain point most teams take on the personality of their head coach.....Make of that what you will.

Jimmy had them in pads and contact every week. 50 as usual you are correct--experience pays. I guess we get that sitting on the couch.......at our age.

Wade is soft, therefore the Cowboys will be soft unless the players take hold of "their" team and raise themselves another notch. IF they win, it will be b/c of high talent, not high motivation or desire.......

December 5, 2008  08:17 AM ET

Damn, all this stuff about Buress and FN couldn't resist putting in a Cowboys thread to cap the week.

Agree 100% with what you say about Emmitt. He's terrible on ESPN but he hit the mark with this statement. As for Romo...even as a Giants fan, I honestly can't say I hate him or blame him for the Cowboys' struggles. That defense has looked horrendous at times and their offense sucked without him. Alot of their playcall was terrible too - forcing the ball to TO on double reverses was sheer stupidity. Just give it to your beast MB and let him run it. This whole "leadership" thing is interesting, because people were saying the same thing about Eli Manning last year. All Romo needs is one playoff run to get the monkey off his back, and he could do it at any time.

I was at that game. That was for the division the last day of the season, I believe. Isn't that the day that Michael Jackson (not the pop singer) dropped what would have been an easy first down inside the 10-yard line? Instead we had to settle for a field goal. I remember a big drop in that game. Pardon my memory though, as I was about 13 at the time.

Giants fan in Boston. You must have had a good time last Feb, huh? :-)

The problem with the boys is that there are only a small handful of players that take this seriously. Romo, Witten, TO, Newman, Barber and a few others. However, as 50 pointed out, nobody has stepped up and taken charge in the locker room. And it simply is a relfection of the coaching. Remember how Aikman and Switzer butted heads because Aikman didn't care for Switzer's coaching style. As a Cowboy fan, it's hard to watch them week in and week out and their lackadaisial attitudes and then see a Giants team that's cohesive and working on all cylinders (did I use enough metaphors?) and think, "Why can't we be like that?" We won't be like that until the coaching reflects the hard work mentality of the Jimmy Johnsons and Tom Coughlins. Sad but true.

I thought it was for home field advantage throughout the playoffs.

Those Cowboys teams were scary to play. Emmitt was incredible. Irvin was the future of dominant receivers. Aikman was so steady and even-keeled. And that goal line play action pass to Novacek in the back of the end zone worked Every. Single. Time!!!

Might have but the fact of what Emmitt did, his superhero routine, overshadowed everything else. Great football. Wish they still played with that kind of heart. Romo and Witten have it. Both play hurt.

Is that what it was for? Thanks for upping the stakes! I know the Giants got knocked out in the first round that season. It may have been the Ricky Watters year. Not 100% sure.

Michael Jackson was better as one of the Three Amigos in Denver.

Thanks Emmitt.

I think that's what it was. Hell, you'd think I would know this as a Cowboy fan. Embarrassing huh?

I think it was for NFC East Crown and the Home field was tied to that..... best memory of that one is in the second half, emmitt is running and uses his otherwise useless right arm to grab a Giant's arm and remove it from his leg and continues, not a stiff arm but just shedding the defender, most likely contributed a bit to the grey beard.

OK look i love E Smith i am a fan because of him thats another (i am 21)story but the man need to let the pros of today handle this its a different game where he couldnt fill these players shoes today and last time i checked we are a better team we learned from alot of things and taking a new approach... the true cowboy have it hard if we win, lose, etc people always want more or got something to say cause we are americas team...
