NYPD at odds with NFL's handling of Plaxico

Five days after Giants receiver Plaxico Burress accidentally shot himself, the New York Police Department remains at odds with the N.F.L. over how the incident was handled in the subsequent hours, with the police issuing new details on Thursday about the matter to support its point of view. Sparking the latest round of discontent were statements made Wednesday by Milt Ahlerich, the N.F.L.'s head of security. In an interview, Ahlerich said that N.F.L. security officials contacted high-ranking members of the police department the morning after the shooting as part of an effort to alert the police to what had occurred. He also said that the authorities "did not have a case" until they were contacted by N.F.L. officials. Paul J. Browne, the police department's deputy commissioner of public information, took issue on Thursday with Ahlerich's statements, and in pointed language said that the league had initially called several lower-level police personnel to ascertain what the authorities knew about the shooting and did not offer up much information of its own. In particular, the police have taken note of the statement the Giants issued Wednesday night that acknowledged that a team official was at the hospital with Burress early Saturday morning. Because the Giants then contacted the N.F.L. later that morning and told security officials to alert the police, the police are wondering if the N.F.L. knew more than it let on when those calls to the police were made.

unless the NYPD reports to rodger, there shouldn't be a problem. charge anyone involved in this mess, just like a normal citizen would be charged.

the 2 tiered justice system is broken though. 1 set of laws for the wealthy. another for the rest of us.

The only thing bigger than the ego of athletes and leagues is the ego of police. This will be interesting how the battle of the ego's play out.

The police have a job that not many would want due to the danger factor. They have to be strong and strong willed. Hence the ego. The meek do not make good police officers. Football players, on the other hand, having been spoon fed all manner of acolades and told how special they are, consider themselves better than the average citizen so their ego is unwarranted and unwanted. Sorry, let me rephrase that. "Some" football players are like this. Plax being one.

I wonder how the NFL would have handled this if it was Pacman who shot himself - I guess that recent SB ring buys you a whole different world of treatment.

December 5, 2008  08:26 AM ET

I think it is time for the NYPD to stop the whining. They are getting a whole lot more cooperation in a case like this than they usually get..now let the judicial system run its course..Everybody wants some pr out of this. The Mayor, the NYPD, I suppose the DA Morgenthau is next to have statements every day. He will no doubt take this case himself, great PR. It got Guiliani a lot of miles to do his job through the papers....

Pacman would already be sitting in jail because of his past indiscretions.

Bet Rudy will have his say about how Bloomberg is handling the situation. He won't be able to resist the limelight.

Too bad the NYPD can't figure out a way to bring charges up on Goodell - it would serve him right for the way he protects the criminal class working for him

Your to something dude, but both NYPD & NFL are too stressed out, Goodboy commis is protective of squeaky-clean image, would rather throw fines ($$) suspensions than get to the heart of the matter, you are an ambassador for the league and a privilege to play pro ball, But Goodboy commis isnt above the law, if he cant corral his lot, his players, you cant keep them all squeaky-clean, you aint their mommas, a new inhouse policy is due, rules of conduct, heck they probably have this but don't sress it enough, current NFL Players contract runs out soon, a strike will hurt everyone with economy so bad off, sorry about this, not to get off topic.

Typo error: Your to something = Your on to something

December 5, 2008  10:00 AM ET

Paul J. Browne, the police department's deputy commissioner of public information has been suspended for four weeks for actions detrimental to the NFL.

December 5, 2008  10:02 AM ET

Media capital of the world, you would expect nothing less. NFL Network will cover all the proceedings. So for those of you who do not have the DISH, now is the time to get it

December 5, 2008  10:27 AM ET

Simple fix....the NFL needs to sit down and make rules across the board and then back them up. Period.

December 5, 2008  10:39 AM ET

Why is it up to the NFL to do the NYPD's job for them? I don't know if the NFL is covering anything up, but other than the 3 players that were at the night club, the NFL wasn't a witness to a crime. Why are they obligated to report a potential crime that they weren't witness to and probably didn't have any information on. They probably thought the hospital/doctor that treated Bur-**** had done what they were supposed to do and reported the incident and didn't feel that they had anything to add.

I think they call that "Obstructing Justice" Have Goodell look it up since he knows all about making sure there is "justice" and "Order" in the NFL
