Tyrone Willingham believes "Maybe Notre Dame got it right" in its decision to retain Charlie Weis for a fifth season, despite a record slightly worse than the one that cost Willingham the job as Irish football coach after three seasons. "It's not just my issue, it's a college football issue -- we have to give coaches a chance to do their job," Willingham said Thursday from Seattle, where he recently was fired as the University of Washington's coach after four seasons, the last of them winless. "Because now we have coaches -- especially some of the minority coaches -- they are losing their jobs after 21/2 years. That's not right." Willingham was the first African-American head coach of any sport at Notre Dame and the first football coach fired with time (two years) remaining on his original contract, following a three-year record of 21-15 (.583) and two bowl appearances. Weis is 28-21 (.571) with two bowl appearances in four seasons, 15 of those losses coming in the last two years, the highest two-season loss total in school history.

Keep taking the high road Ty!

The racists of course got it right because nobody wants to come to a loser.

His coaching credentials may not be top notch, but when you compare him to people like Weis and RRod, you see something far more important: a top notch human being.

dude is a stand up guy.

How about we just leave race out of the equation completely today...? Minority are obviously under-represented in the football coaching world, and this a challenge we must not back down from in coaching in general, but I question how useful yesterdays conversation on it was towards this healing...

Ty would never mention race or use it as an excuse, so how about we respect him by doing the same.

Just imagine what Cheeseburger's record would be without your kids Ty... oh wait, we can look at the last two seasons and figure that out.

Can you 'splain this one? The racists got it right? Which racists?

I couldn't agree more. It's just too bad that winning is more important than anything else. It sucks, but that's life.

Good move on Tyrone's part for taking the high road. It's a classy act on his part.

You've lost a lot off your fastball.

December 5, 2008  09:29 AM ET

Notre Dame are garbage anyway, they won't win anything.

December 5, 2008  09:32 AM ET

I don't think race should be a factor in retaining a coach or not or hiring a coach. The coaches record and ability to motivate his student athletes should be the only factor in his hiring or firing. That being said, Charlie Weis should be gone. The only reason he isn't is because the way things are right now Notre Dame really cannoy afford his buyout.

December 5, 2008  09:36 AM ET

Also, it is refrshing to see a coach who's career is on the ropes being a complete gentleman. I don't think little Richard from Michigan would be as respectful. Heck, he can't even handle fans being upset with his performance so he tried to throw his coaching issues onto their shoulders.

Keep your head held high like you are Tyrone. Things will get better once you get to coach a great team that performs for you.

No offense to Willingham, but despite Weis' record being slightly less that his at Notre Dame, Weis is a name brand, and name brands mean a lot in college recruiting. Everyone knows him and knows who he is, and this comes into play when recruiting when Weis comes into a recruit's home with three Super Bowl rings and larger than life personality. No one knows who Willingham is. He's as quiet as a mouse. It's like Bobby Knight and Derek Kellogg coming at your recruiting. Who would you sign with?

Is this before or after Knight chokes your parents and throws your furniture around the room?
