Michael Crabtree's father said Thursday he was surprised the Texas Tech All-America receiver told a Web site he planned to return to Tech next season. Crabtree's father, also named Michael, said his son has not yet made a final decision on whether he'll enter the NFL draft or return for his junior season. "He hasn't told me that," the elder Crabtree said. "We're pretty much leaning toward coming out. But it's up to him. If he wants to come back and win championships, I won't be mad at him." The receiver's father said the family plans to be with him next Thursday in Orlando, Fla., at the Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards show. Crabtree's father said he plans to sit down with his son after the show to make a decision. "It's still up in the air right now," Crabtree's father said. RedRaiderSports.com quoted the former Carter star as saying Thursday he planned to play another season at Tech. The Web site reported Crabtree, who has 227 catches for 3,097 yards and 40 touchdowns in two collegiate seasons, said he was "not at all" considering entering the NFL draft.

Win championships? Unlikely. His stock will never be higher than it is at the moment. He better listen to daddy.

I agree with Baitor

He should stay, finish his education so he has something to fall back on incase he does suffer a tragic injury. It won't hurt him to stick it out another year.

He's crazy to stay. With the NFL working on putting a maximum on what rookies just drafted can be paid .... he needs to come out and enter the draft right now. There will not be a level in the Spring Draft .. but in 2010 look for it.
If he does not enter the draft this year he will be forfeiting mucho dinero, folks.

He can always go to school once he is in the NFL ... just like MANY NFL ... and hell all pro. sports players do.
Why take a chance on getting seriously injured in the college game just to get your college education when you have millions of dollars staring you in the face??
You go to college so you can earn a degree so that you can come into the working world and make good money. That's it. He already has his "degree" in football at the WR position. Now go make your money Crab. He can get an education while he is making his money in the NFL.

So, if a company came to you during your junior year at school and said they wanted to pay you $30 million up front and $4 million a year for 5 yrs to judge their bikini contests, you would turn it down so you could get your degree to fall back on, in case you go blind from monkey spanking?

No.. He shouldnt. He should go and get the dough while the dough is there. What if he suffers the injury AT TECH??!! He should also buy major insurance with his guaranteed dough.

I never saw that posting on Monster or Career Builder... send a brother a link!!!

I agree with Mikeofborg the NCAA and NFL need to put the end to underclassmen coming into the league it's ruining the sport and most aren't getting any degrees to fall back on. These kids are getting free rides to basically play ball it's not about the student athlete anymore it's how much money the NCAA can make

Rediculous argument!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Any fool can continue his monkey spanking career and finish his degree in summer school or correspondance!

Who does TT have to replace Harrell after this year? Crabtree may as well go into the draft now cause his stock will definitely next season.

Mike Leach will find some student on campus and turn him into quarterback who'll have a 4000-yard, 45 TD season. He does it every time.

December 5, 2008  02:06 PM ET

I used to be a big advocate for these kids staying and finishing their educations. However, if you are a guaranteed first round pick you should take the money and play. If the unthinkable happens and you can't play any longer, you go back to school with that signing bonus in your pocket.

December 5, 2008  02:27 PM ET

Mistake. His stock can only go down from here. not by much, but it can ( see Matt Leinart). Take the money crabtree.

December 5, 2008  02:27 PM ET

Father knows best. Take the money and run kid.

It's ruining what sport? Both CFB and the NFL are as popular now as they've ever been! These are grown men and they shouldn't be forced to stay all four years if they don't want to. The current rule of having to wait three years after you've graduated high school is enough. Why lessen your earning power by staying in school and playing for free? If education is important, they can always stash away enough money to pay their own way through 1 or 2 years of school. The opportunity for education will always be there.

Give me a break, this isn't even worth discussing (although I did enjoy the monkey spanking comment). The only reason he'll return to campus after the bowl game will be to pack his bags.
