Braves offering Burnett five-year deal

The Braves are ready to offer A.J. Burnett a five-year deal worth $75 million. The Braves started with a four-year, $60 million deal that included a vesting option for a fifth year but are willing to guarantee the fifth season. "He would have to take that because of the length," an industry source with knowledge of the Braves' plans said. "Even if somebody else gave him $18 million a year for four years that's still less [$72 million]." Burnett has indicated he wants a no-trade clause. However, the Braves historically don't do no-trades. "He shouldn't worry about that because his contract is his no-trade; that's a lot of money," the source said.

A long term deal to an injury prone pitcher so soon after Hampton? They must be desperate.

Good Money for the Blue Jays second best starter last year.

That should now make the Peavy signing a little interesting.

As far as these "no-trade clauses", I have one for you.
Perform well and we won't trade your arse.

You stole my thunder. Didn't they learn anything from the Hampton mess? I hope they do it, cause then they won't be a threat to my Phils anytime soon.

In the Braves defense they did not pen that contract, though they did trade for it, but Colorado was paying part of it, how much I do not know. Either way Hampton is and will be a bust.

Kerry Wood South......

December 5, 2008  08:49 AM ET

He's been relativelty healthy 3 of the last 4 years. The only problem is that he's only thrown 200 innings three times in his career. Considering the market and Wren's means to spend money this offseason, why not make this move. I just personally think they should have pulled the trigger on the Peavy deal. He would have been a better pickup.

So you think everythin is about the Yanees? Ha.

that's a relative statement........(pun intended)

The guy has trouble written ALL OVER him-
firstly- he's not been healthy
he's made only 30 starts TWO times in his career
he's had only ONE season (last year) that he's been MORE than
3 games over .500 %........best season other than last year
was 2002- 12 & 9

He ONLY stays healthy during contract years.....
and you want to give him FIVE years-
that's just POOR MANAGEMENT
- what the hell has happened to the braves ??

December 5, 2008  09:02 AM ET

Why not spend a little more and go after C.C.? Seriously.

In all fairness to the Braves management it's not a little more money for CC. It's at least double the committed dollars.

Atlanta Braves... enjoy the right handed Mike Hampton

December 5, 2008  09:36 AM ET

Burnett really thinks he is hot shhyt apparently these days. Not only is he demanding 5 years but he also wants a no trade clause. Might be asking for too much there. I did love that last line about how the expensive nature of the deal is in effect its own no trade clause as it would prohibit other teams from trading for him.

December 5, 2008  09:43 AM ET

I'd be stunned if the Braves guaranteed 5 years for Burnett. They'll regret that one if they do it.

Yeah but they lost most of last years starting rotation so they have a lot of holes to fill. When you are that desperate you kind of have to overpay and hand out longer deals than you would normally want to.

December 5, 2008  11:22 AM ET

BTW: this morning Frank Wren specifically said the fifth year is not guaranteed.... but is "easily achievable"....

December 5, 2008  11:23 AM ET

The Braves have also had a policy of not giving no trade clauses.....

December 5, 2008  11:26 AM ET

I still believe (possibly incorrectly) that this is playing out in public because they are letting the Padres know that there is a limited shelf life on any possibility of a Peavy trade.... it's highly unusual for the Braves to talk about offers or pending deals.... just raises the antaenna..... I'm not saying they won't sing Burnett, but they're letting the Swap Meet know that time is running out on the Peavy trade possibilities....
